Subject: Tune Add: Scott Joplin waltz for Valentine's Day
From: GUEST,leeneia

Recently I went to a concert of ragtime music, and I heard the waltz 'Please Say You Will,' by Scott Joplin. (I believe it was his first published piece.) The words were trivial, but I listened to the melody and thought "I could play that."

So I found it online, changed it from B flat to C, and have been playing it. It's a pretty piece, and my husband loves it. Scott Joplin was having fun with his scales in it, because it goes from C to Am to D to Em and back to C.

I've noted a very simple bass line, but it's just a suggestion. When I play it, I improvise something more complicated, but it's never the same twice.

I'm sending the MIDI to Joe, and I hope he can post here for Valentine's Day. (Thanks to Will Fly for the idea.)

Thanks, Joe, for posting. Gargoyle, are you planning to play it? If so, on what? It's nice to know.

Thank you for the source.

And what a grand source it is. It has been bookmarked.

Joplin is a favorite of mine.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

Indeed it will be played, on a gothic 1898 Cable/Nelson upright grand adorned with gargoyles.

Oh boy, oh boy! I'm happy to hear from someone who plays an old piano. Mine is an Ivors and Pond, made in 1906. It doesn't have any gargoyles, sad to say, but it has a beautiful bass section.

The higher notes are not so hot, but played delicately they are all right.

leeneia, thanks, that is a lovely piece. Joplin is one of my favourites, too, as are old pianos. I was appalled to see a special report about how many grand pianos are sent to the dump in NYC, even beautiful ornate uprights! My friend just gave her child (adult) the old grand which belonged to her parents. It is gorgeous. When I get my bow fixed, I think I'll try this on my violin.

That's sad about the pianos. Even if they aren't playable, the wood ought to be usable for something.

(Reminds me of a headline in The Onion, a few months after 9/11:

"Nation Feels Temporary Affection for New York")

I didn't know you played violin, Kat. I hope you get your bow fixed and learn this lovely waltz.

Thanks, leeneia, I will. I've played violin, piano since I was eight, though I am not practised up! I grew up hearing my dad fiddle and, now that I have his fiddle i've been fiddling some, too, but nothing for public consumption and, not without the bow repair. Mudcatter, Rex, told me he thinks my Rog and I can fix it. It's just a matter of getting the materials and doing it. Life and health got in the way.'-0

Not for the faint-hearted: Last Note A Thud in the Dump.
