Not sure I was quite as young as three -- maybe more like five -- but I do remember with certainty that the man my cap was set for was Rod Serling. What a dreamboat!

Damn, I had good taste ... unusual, bur good. (Still true, by the way.)

She lived right across the street from me, and she was always nice to me, and she looked pretty in a frilly dress. I swore I'd never forget her, but now I can't remember her name. Oh, the shame of it! How could I ever forget what's-her-name?

At three I was placed in a cloistered monastery so that women of all ages wouldn't be tempted beyond their power to resist. It didn't work; they broke down the walls and carried me off where they did unspeakable but delightful things to me: rocking me to sleep, preparing my meals, catering to my every whim and generally treating me like the god I was. Then my mother found out and that was that.

At three I was still unclear on the concept of species, and rather hoped to grow up to be either a draft horse or Laddie, the farm dog up the road. Marriage did not enter my mind for a couple of decades at least.

I was unaffected by the world of entertainment at age 3. We didn't have a TV. My best guess is that my mother would have been the queen of my heart at that age. Later on, when I started first grade, I fell in love with some little girl in the class, but I can't recall what her name was. A couple grades later I fell in love with another little girl and her name was Dianne Powell. I didn't get around to falling in love with any public figures until I became aware of Joan Baez, and that would have been around the time I was 12 years old...in 1960. (And we still didn't have a TV at that time. I got to know about Joan through listening to the Vanguard recordings and looking at her pictures on the album sleeves. As far as I was concerned, she was IT.)

Age 3?? I never even thought about girls & marriage until **GRADE** 3... then it was the blonde in front of me...Margaret Holder. I didn't know exactly why I was interested, but I actually dipped her long pigtail in the inkwell on my desk. It was another 4-5 years before I had a sort of crush on a girl.

The lass next door.   Mind you, years later she had my cherry. No idea if the experience was reciprocated. She was a bit older than me.

Wrote my first ruddy song about her for that matter. Ir at least the first I ever sang in public. Some lusty teenage doggerel about the eyes upon her head matching the sun against the blue velvet sky.

Theakstons Old Peculiar. Reaching the depths of horny songwriting and making a folk club suffer....

Marky Johnson, without a doubt... She lived in the same apartment building and she had that mysterious "older woman" quality about her as she was 4... She also must have liked me a lot because she lured me into the basement one day and we both got nude... I think that was the day when I discovered that remembering stuff might come in handy as I don't have any memories that pre-date that little what-ever-it-was...

BTW, our families stayed in touch for years and years and when I was a freshman in college I took her out once but I guess the chemistry had long since left that basement...

Needless to say, we didn't marry...

One of my true loves when I was three was a girl with deep and dark-brown eyes, eyelashes that wouldn't quit and the most beautiful reddish-blond hair y'ever saw. She died when I was about six. Poison. I broke every window in the house of the people responsible over the course of about five months.

Little Cheryl (never knew her surname) - with beautiful blue eyes and dark hair.

She rarely came to school (there was 'something wrong with her') but on those glorious occasions when she turned up we would walk hand-in-hand around the playground.

I found out she had died when I overheard Mum talking to a neighbour. Cheryl had a hole-in-the-heart. She was six.

Mom's maternally embellished reminiscences assigned the status of "Bruce's first girlfriend" to Carmen who lived across the street when I was five or six. Personally, I don't remember anything romantic about our relationship.

I never happened to do the three-year-old-choosing-who-to-marry thing. My first memory of a crush must have been in second or third grade; I don't know that I ever so much as really talked to her. I majored in totally one-sided crushes for quite a few years. I was 26 years old, just out of the navy, before I wound up in a real relationship, very much in love and "going to marry"; if you listen to the lyrics of Leonard's "Alexandra Leaving", believe me, that's a documentary. It took some more years before the actual opportunity to marry a woman who wouldn't have been a let down.

If we'd had a TV at the time, I think I'd have been right on the same wavelength, Dan. I didn't really get to see MTM until the Mary Tyler Moore show was up and running a few years later.

The little boy who lived on the other side of the dirt lane between the tenement house where I lived until I was 4. I don't remember his name, but we played in the mud together. His mother wondered why I looked cleaner than he did when we had finished.

kelly johnson or his older, by one year, brother, patrick. we were in and out of each other's houses all the time. they lived across the street and our moms were best friends. by first grade, it was chuck..can't remember his last name.

kelly was a geuis, but turned to a life of paper crime...kited checks etc. has spent most of his life in prison. patrick, a firefighter, drove home drunk one night and missed a curve. car turned upside down in about four feet of water killed him. we sang "i was born under a wanderin' star" from paint your wagon...not a dry eye anywhere. he was in his 30s.

I always had a house in mind, with a laboratory whose door was overhead so the kids couldn't get in till they were older... but I never specified the spouse, somehow. I knew there would BE one, or thought I did, but really didn't have any individual in mind...

I am reminded of Lily Tomlin who once said, "When I was little I wanted to grow up to BE somebody. I guess I should have been more specific."

Is Susan Sarandon married to a woman?

Aside, we saw Catherine Deneuve in person once, upcountry in Africa somewhere in the 60's. She was so beautiful my dad tried to eat soup through his ear.

I can't remember the answer for when I was three years old, but the summer after first grade a kid I knew, named Roy Woods, insulted a girl I'd extravagantly admired in first grade, Virginia Levy.

I resented it with a punch, he replied with one, and I had a nosebleed, and that was that. The cost of gallantry!

In later years, Roy Woods was a pretty good friend.
