Work is taking me to Ireland on Friday. My time is limited but I have the whole weekend in Belfast, and then Tuesday night free in Dublin. I've got my Rough Guide and will try to see some of the sites during the days, but am looking to fill my evenings with music.

For Saturday night in Belfast, I'm torn between the Fureys with Davey Arthur (I know they were pretty popular in their day and have been enjoying what I'm listening to, but are they any good without Finbar and how much is it a chessy nostalgia fest?) and Tiarnan O Duinnchinn & Laoise Kelly (a uillean piper and harpist, the real thing in an Irish language centre but a rather austere night...).

Nothing is jumping out on Sunday night, I'll see where the wind takes me There are a few sessions that might be okay, or else singer-songwriter Mick Flannery who sounds okay. Bit David Gray. Will probably be nice in a concert atmosphere.

My Tuesday night in Dublin I hope to be at the session at The Cobblestone Bar, which sounds like the best having studied the options listed on thesession.org.

Any tips welcome.

Agreed re Cobblestone. No idea what it's like these days on a Tuesday night but if it's too quiet - ask for advice!

Tiarnan and Laoise will be fantastic - two amazing musicians!! I would give that a whirl. If you are looking for sessions in Belfast, Maddens Bar on Berry Street is always a good bet (go upstairs).

I saw the Furey's live last November, the first time I've ever seen them. I can say in all honesty that they were brilliant, a throughly enjoyable night. They sounded like they really enjoyed the night too.

I wouldn't mind being a quid behind them !

That said, on the night I saw them they were professional, polished and a joy to listen to. I really cannot fault their performance, music, singing, patter in any way. There were a lot of people, perhaps 2,000 in the audience and most seemed to be of the same opinion.

As for the "politics" I have witnessed many politicians over the years "aligning" themselves the popular acts. Harold Wilson with the Beatles to David Cameron with the Smiths, although I am actually more inclined to believe Cameron on his choice. (forgive me Grandad for this)

Thanks for the advice all. I'm leaning towards Tiarnan O Duinnchinn & Laoise Kelly, as it seems more of a uniquely Irish experience, but I'll try to catch the Fureys on tour some day.

The John Hewitt bar in Lower Donegall Street is worth a phone call, at least. Don't know what nights they have music, but it's a nice place to try - and it's free. Quite central. Cheers, and good luck!

Without making any judgements - musical or otherwise - if I had a choice between The Fureys and Tiarnan O'Duinnchinn and Laoise Kelly, I'd go for the latter.

To be honest the Fureys are not what they were (IMO) and that is not helped by Eddy being bloody minded for years around not bringing in another piper when Finbar left.

Fiona has handed you a little diamond there though with Maddens. Great place upstairs and down. And if you manage to "over enjoy" yourself of an evening there is a great little cafe a few yards from there (name escapes me) that does a great fry up to settle yourself with the morning after. Don't be afraid to check out some of the bars on the Falls Road either.

As far as Dublin goes, I would see what's happenning at the Clifton Court Hotel? Wouldn't stay there, but if you want some real Dublin as opposed to the Disneyfied Temple Bar you could do worse.

you are there now, so you probably know the Nashville belfast singer songwriter fest is on
there are daytime events on Sun, for instance from 2pm there are several singers at Madisons hotel

I dont think tonight's harp and uileann pipe gig at An Droichead would be particularly "austere"
