It might be appropriate to mention here that the guitar which JP plays on this video is one which he commissioned from the young Canadian luthier Joshua House.

Joshua House doesn't appear to have the same exposure as some of the other, better-known Canadian luthiers, but the fact that a musician of JP Cormier's calibre would choose him to build a custom instrument surely speaks volumes for his talents.

That is one helluva truly amazing video, Murray - thanks for sharing that, which reminds me of Tim and Brendan Power at last year's Tredegar House festival in the City Of Newport, South Wales. They were out of this world, and I'll go to see Tim and Brendan time and time again for their jawdropping playing.

I reviewed JP's wonderful, fabulous CD a good few years ago; he's a fantastic musician.

Murray and I have had an ongoing discussion over more than a decade relating to the placement of JP and Tony McManus as the best of the best. Now both are absolutely fantastic and I respect Murray as much more an expert than myself, and am delighted that he has posted this!
JP is no flash in the pan! He has performed as a studio musician in Nashville in past years with people like Chet Atkins. ( He rates Atkins as his mentor and the best ever)
In Cape Breton the fiddle is king and JP is a fantastic fiddler as well! In recent years the guitar has been used for playing old fiddle and pipe tunes starting with people like AD MacIntosh and John Allen Cameron. JP along with Dave MacIsaac, Ciffie Carter, Scott MacMillan and Brian Doyle have brought this to a higher level! During Cape Breton's Celtic Colours Festival you may find these legends playing together on stage at the Guitar Summit in Judique.
Bill D's wonder about why he never appeared at The National Flatpicking Championship has an explaination:
In Cape Breton you will find few music competitions. It is as musical a place as any on earth, but who is better than who remains a subjective call. The enjoyment of the performance requires no panel of judges, who may often be of lesser ability than the performer! The ears and the tapping of the feet become a judge on a much higher plane!

I am amazed that he went unnoticed at Celtic Connections, breezy, I have to admit that I was not aware of his participation, otherwise I would have been there.

I know that JP is a big fan of the Shetland Folk festival, and loves to play there.

He is a champion fiddle player

In fact anything with strings on

Big in canada

Whats your take on his composition 'Afganistan' ?

He is also a record'cd - producer.

He appeared at last years Celtic Connections but went unnoticed as far as the Uk was concerned

maybe there is a reason, but he's worth knowing about

Very impressive, esp. the triplets toward the end. And Tim Edey on rhythm is no slouch, either! In the final shot, you can just see John Doyle going, Wow.

I attended the first 7-8 National Flatpicking Championships at Winfield, Kansas, and there's no doubt that J.P. would have won there. I wonder why he's never been there.

I have watched Doc Watson play with Norman Blake, Tony Rice and Dan Crary... and J.P. amazes me with the fluidity of his playing. I don't necessarily like quite so much speed, but I am impressed.

I am not one for posting links to Youtube videos, leastways not nowadays, but I feel I cannot let this video of JP Cormier go by without a mention on Mudcat.

IMO, this is probably the finest display of virtuoso flatpicking I have ever seen, bar none. I did in fact see JP perform at this same festival 13 years ago, and he was amazing back then, but this just reaches a whole new level ...
