I like Tyndale Blue jeans. They are heavy duty,like the original work-wear bjs, hold up, and are fire resistant, (if I get too hot:)

Add me to the 501 list - black and indigo. For work I wear cheap Dickey's jeans - although most of the time I live in their indigo combat trousers with the ankle ties and kneepad pockets. OK, so the other barristers in my chambers may look askance, but, hey, I'm a rebel!

Asda and/or Primark does me. If I go out, i.e weddings etc, I wouldn't be wearing jeans anyway. Then again, if people want to that's fine by me.

I, also, have been pleased with Faded Glory. Dead cheap, good fit for me (Oh, Lord, does that mean I'm built like the Ideal WalMart Person?), and the fabric is light enough so they're good for walking and other moving around in. For that reason, they may not last as long, but they don't need to.

i remember when tourists were advised to bring blue jeans along (to sell) when visiting europe and russia....is that still the case? Are there other places where jeans would be a welcome commodity? Even used ones might be appreciated by those who have difficulty getting them. there is usually a good selection at thrift stores. Does the TSA get suspicious if they see a suitcase full of blue denim?

Consumer Reports did a bunch of jeans a few years ago. They found an almost precise relationship between price and durability; as the price went up, the durability went down.

I've been buying mainly Faded Glory for at least a couple of years now; dumpy, sloppy looking, and totally comfortable.

You can find Levi's for $30 here in Canada at a chain of stores called Winners. I believe they are in the U.S. under the TJX brand. Sears has them on sale for around that price twice annually (for a week)

I wear jeans every day and that's what I'm most comfortable in. I'm lucky in that I can wear them to my office job (we're offsite and NO ONE comes here to visit). That's one of the biggest perks of the job, IMO.

In my local 3 or 4 state area, it's almost impossible to find brand named Levis except in places where everything is overpriced and, as several have noted they're lots of price for the name.

There are, however, many other decent brands available (so many I don't bother remembering what they're called) that are just as (or more) serviceable, and old farts like me are much more likely to find the more comfortable "full cut" styles off the shelf where the off-brands are than in the few places that stock the "name brands." ("Boot cut" blue jeans are mostly only for those with the sh*t inside the boots.)

Farm machinery/supply outlets (maybe Atwoods or Tractor Supply here?) are a good place to start looking, and the best deal I've found in the last decade or so came from a truck stop (with mostly real trucks in the lot) in far West Texas. (Long haul truckers really like somethin' comfortable on their a**.)

I do the fell and hill thing too, Will, have done for many years. I never, ever wear jeans for walking, not even just walking the dog, I have proper walking trousers designed for the purpose - much more comfortable, don't wick water up and, as you rightly point out, don't draw body heat away in the wet. But, when I'm not out walking, jeans are de rigeur for me!

It's a case of wearing the right gear for the thing you're doing, IMO!

Tunesmith - clothes are functional AFAIC, 'boring' or otherwise doesn't come into the equation. There are far better things to get excited or bored about. IMHO, YMMV.

I haven't worn jeans in years, and the reason I stopped wearing them is that I used to do a lot of fell and moorland walking. When jeans get wet, you can lose heat quite rapidly they're not as good for hiking or walking as other materials. So I just got out of the habit of buying or wearing jeans.

Another rip-off of Australians - the USD is worth a bit less than the AUD ($1 to $1.05) & we always pay lots more.

Lucky us, we pay lots more for software, hardware, & a lot of other stuff & now LEVIS!!

You shouldn't piss and moan about 30 bucks for a pair of Levis.
In the UK, they would set you back GB£ 60 on Amazon (that's US$ 90) and around GB£ 100 (US$ 150) if you bought them in a store.
You should count your blessings!
I buy Marks & Spencer's own-brand 'Blue Harbour' jeans nowadays, great quality, nice colours, GB£25 a pair (that's US$ 37 - same as you lot pay for The Real Thing!). :-)

And, yes, they were good jeans. I bought George jeans at Walmart last fall. HEY! They were $8... $8!!!!!!! Levi's are $30++ and I gotta hem them because no matter what the leg length says on the "size", they are all 36". Now, my keys get stuck in the hole in one pocket and my change falls thru the hole in the other pocket so I gotta sew that up buy $30++? for something not even made it The States anymore???

I've had a few pairs of Wranglers and Lees over the years but for my money - the best jeans are the original button front Levis 501's. {It's a shame they aren't made in America anymore.} You are welcome to your own opinion of course.
