Signing an internet petition is worth something less than a fart in a high wind as far as actually accomplishing anything is concerned- other than giving the narcissists that do so a warm feeling inside that they've done something worthwhile - a particularly insidious form of mental masturbation.

By the way, is being DIS-friended better or worse than being UN-friended?

I'm not sure which "Don" you're talking about, but as far as I am concerned, I get a good dozen requests to sign petitions in my e-mail every morning. Every morning. Some I sign, some I don't, depending on the cause. When I sign a petition, invariably what follows is another e=mail saying "thank you," along with a request for $3.00 or $10.00, and/or "please become a member" or "please e-mail this to three friends" or "please put this on your Facebook page."

There are causes that I favor and some that I don't. I do what I can. But that's it.

If I gave my all for every cause that wanted me to, I wouldn't have time to eat, sleep, or go to the bathroom.

I sympathize with the plight of the poor pythons that have been turned loose in the Everglades, but I'll be damned if I'm going to adopt one! If I did that, then to be fair, I'd have to adopt a whale, a polar bear, a Wyoming wolf, a warthog. . . .

Not all, Will. Don's a great guy, even when he's wrong.

Here's my evidence, Don. I said you "assume". You said "gives the distinct impression". You ask me for proof that someone I have never heard of did not sign something I have never heard of. I haven't even mentioned the fact that some people with a sense of privacy would not post a comment to say that they signed the petition or not. It's THEIR business - not anybody else's.

Like I said above, have fun with that. Additionally, please stop using my name in an attempt to bait me into such a silly bunch of twaddle which has NO basis in logic.

Now, can we get back to some seriously silly banter. I feel the need to shit upon something/one which/who deserves it.

Well, it's a pity that a light-hearted look at a silly word has got turned into pointless bickering about the importance or otherwise of online petitions and Facebook.

Looks like Ron and Gnu have unfriended each other...

Look, it's a fact.   She posts petitions for various causes.    Mostly people ignore them and talk trivia instead.

This gives the distinct impression they cannot take a few minutes out from their busy schedules of telling all about what they ate yesterday to sign the petitions.

If they did so, then went back to regaling all and sundry with their daily exploits, nobody would have any grounds for complaint.

As it is, their approach seems to indicate they care nothing for the world around them--which in fact has some problems.

Hence my description of Facebook as high-tech gossip over the fence.

If you have evidence to the contrary, please present it.

Welllll, I still don't understand why she or you assume people didn't sign the petition and are upset because they didn't "like" or take time to post a comment.

As for anyone misunderstanding anything... I think you misunderstand the need for people to share some silliness or explore humanity or the arts and sciences and not be told ANY of it is trivial based on your assumptions... especially about them not taking time to "like" the whales or write a comment about why these big trout are important to them. To say they don't care about the big trout because they don't take their turn on YOUR soapbox is... oh, nevermind.

This started out to be a silly banter thread but it's "here we go again". Have fun, whatever your "fun" may be.

Not "allowed". That's blatant distortion of my statement--as I think you know. Nobody is advocating censorship.

It's just that Facebook has a huge user base.    ( And it is possible to sign petitions both for the homeless and to try to stop shark-finning.)

So, like Willie Sutton, you go where the money is.

And in Jan's case, it's not money being asked for, but a few minutes to sign a petition--even if it means taking time away from conveying essential information like what you wore yesterday.

I will save the whales on the save the whales websites. There are lots of them. On Facebook, I can have lighthearted banter or otherwise in personal or public for(u)m with friends or others and hear of ideas/humour/science/politics/whatever of ANY sort from people all over the world... even save the big fuckin trout.

So... if you think only saving the whales should be allowed on Facebook... well, do the math... it adds up to ONE... the middle one.

Fuck me! Why do so many people want to tell me what to do... what to think... what to say... what to save...... It's fucking inane! Turn the damn channel! ON YOUR OWN TV!

Point is: not whales vs homeless-- but that Facebook postings don't in the main concern themselves with anything but trivia.

Added to which, nobody is asking anybody to choose between causes. In fact you could easily sign more than one petition.   Nobody is asking you to sell your firstborn or give your last pint of blood--just concern yourself with something other than gossip.   Which seems to be too much to ask on Facebook.

"..trivial postings call forth a cornucopia of trivial responses."

It is WORK to sign petitions and research serious stuff! Silly repartee is easy.

It may well be that many people 'get' Jan's notes and think about it, without actually replying. Making the effort is a labor of love & concern that requires not worrying about instant gratification. (ask ME why I continue to preach logic and reason in certain threads)

Yeah, I keep running into that "unfriended" ad. I clicked on it once and it told me I had to sign up for a Facebook account to find out who the culprits are.

I don't have a Facebook account and I don't want a Facebook account. I see it as an egregious waste of time and I already waste too much time here on Mudcat.

What does "unfriended" mean, anyway? Somebody on my nonexistent Facebook account doesn't like me anymore? O woe is me!!

If three people whom I don't even know "unfriend" me, that really breaks my heart. I'll go to the fridge, crack open a cold beer, and drown my sorrows. Somehow, I think I'll manage.

Sure... I would gladly save the whales... right after I save the elderly, the veterans, the homeless...................

The thing that gets me about Facebook--and it really infuriates Jan--is that the overwhelming majority of posts on Facebook seem to be total trivia.   She posts about environmental issues--trying to publicize Sea Shepherd, stop shark-finning,   save the elephants, stop the sale of glue traps, etc. And is mostly roundly ignored--even by her real friends.

Facebook seems to be the high-tech equivalent of gossip over the fence.

I don't bother with it.

At least on Mudcat if we have disputes they seem to be about things that matter to us--like politics or music. She wants me to start posting about the issues she emphasizes---which are certainly worth grappling with.

I have 'unfriended' Google, Amazon, doubleclick, and many others, by killing all ads.... so I don't see those spam ads.

(depending on the type of ad, I sometimes see a little note like this [Ad] in place of the ad, and sometimes I see a big note to the right saying "connection killed by Proxomitron")

(Sometimes I intentionally turn OFF the ad killer to click on stuff for Max.)

To unfriend or not to unfriend, that is both the interrogatory pronouncement and the question one must ask of the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle. Whether 'tis no blur in the mind to suffer the rings and sorrows of outrageous four tunes or take up arms and fuck 'em back. To sleep, poor chants, to dream. There's the rub. Thrice, and out lept a genie to say, "To unfriend or not to unfriend . . . ."

Noticed somewhere that the gulf stream appears to have moved South so instead of the grey dreich days we normally get here in SW Scotland during the winter we are having the same fine weather as John MacKenzie is having--long may it continue--I do not mind how cold so long as I can see the sun.
"Unfriended" has also appeared on the Gumtree site.

I've seen the same popup saying I've been Unfriended, and was momentarily a little puzzled since I'm not on any of those sites where I could ever have been Friended.

It's obviously a "phishing ploy," which doesn't necessarily mean it's malicious (although just using the method is suspicious); but they'll be happy if they can make anybody curious enough to click - which means that they will benefit in some way if you do. You probably won't.

Here, of course, if it said "Max has Unfriended you" or "Joe" etc (or maybe even gnu), it would be a "Spear Phishing" attempt - using the name of someone you probably know (and maybe respect a little) to induce you to "reply."

Just more web junk, and not at all unusual.

The proper response is "try not to be annoyed while you ignore it."

John

We here in La Belle Province have been reunfriended by the weather. We've had snow followed by--gasp--snow, warm days where the temperature got a few degrees above freezing, and now rain which will freeze tonight and lead to incredible carnage and mayhem on the roads. Always one to look on the positive side let me say it will positively be a mess by 9:00 PM this evening. We will have been reunfriended in a most reunfriendedlyish manner.

That should be of particular concern to folks on Facebook given the intimate, personal nature of that social medium. People feel dashed upon the rocks when the like button is not clicked. O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory? Is it for naught we struggle to impress the world when a simple keystroke hath the power to render us senseless on the strands of destitution and uncertainty? It is a barren world that presents a feast of nothingness with shit for dessert. Bon appetit. Such is the base nature of defriendistration. Balls I say and other stuff like that.
