Subject: Cutty Wren Folk Club Redcar moves venue
From: nutty
Date: 28 Feb 13 - 10:16 AM

After years of being out of town the Cutty Wren is moving from it's present home at the Duke William in Skelton to the Borough Road Bowling Club in Redcar.

The Duke William's sudden closure (due to illness) has meant a speedy seach for a new venue and the club will return to it's roots this evening for a theme night of songs connected with John Barleycorn.

Situated behind the cemetery on Redcar Lane the Bowling Club is convenient to people travelling by bus or train to Redcar. For people driving and using Sat Navs the postcode is TS10 2FD.

It was a lovely night, last night, at the new venue.
The room is an almost perfect size - it comfortably fitted in the 40 participants attendeding and was warm, clean and with drinks at a very reasonable price.

We are hoping that the venue will become permanant but at least the club has a home in the short term.

Next week is a sing-a-round so come along .

Songs of John Barleycorn would have been ironic at the Duke William, devoid as all of Skelton is of a handpump!

Firstly, I would like to say to Nutty that it is good to see the word, "fitted". In my country they are trying to introduce strong verbs, as if there were not enough of them already. They use "fit" for "fitted", "dove" for "dived" and "snuck" for "sneaked". Ogden Nash, to no avail, even wrote:
Although a baseball may be hit not hitted
The past tense of fit is always fitted
The sole exception worth a haricot
Is Joshua fit de battle of Jericho.
AS I live in Virginia, I'm not likely to visit your club, but I thought you all might be interested in a version of the Cutty Wren, which comes through Pennsylvania:
Where are you going says Cozy Mozy
Where are going says Jack a thread nozy
Where are you going says brothers all three
I'm going to the woods says Willy Wally
(Keeping the same pattern)
What do you do there; I'm going hunting
What are you going to hunt
Hunting Robin Redbreast
What are you going to hunt him with
Bows and arrows
What are you going to cook him in
Pots and kettles
What are you going to cut him up with
Knives and hatchets
Who will help eat him
My wife and children
Where you throw the bones
I'll throw them in the sea
They'll sink the ships
They'll sink in the sand

Cozy, Mozy and Nozy have a long o; Wally like the boxer Ali, with a W

As I understand the situation - this is a stop gap until something more permanant can be arranged.

Because the club were given so little notice of the closure of the Duke William they did an amazing job finding another venue so quickly but it really is a case of - WATCH THIS SPACE.

Any changes and I'll let you know

The duke William is open again and was only closed for Couple days which was unavoidable because of illness. Pub are happy to have folk club back as a friend spoke to pub last week. Seems Shame to not go back.

It's a strange effect moving an established club, either night or venue. In either case you lose a few regulars but somehow gain a few new faces. I get the feeling this was just a temporary blip and normal service will be resumed.

Good luck to what is obviously a thriving club. I have always wanted to visit you as I used to help run the "other" Cutty Wren in Hythe Hampshire, ah happy days.

Andy

When I last went to the Cutty Wren it was upstairs in a pub in Redcar, the landlady was former actress June Laverick and I got rather pissed! The rest I would like to forget! (one of those moments when one needs a big hole to swallow you up - it was a bit embarrassing!)

Obviously you can't please all the people.

Personally - I am delighted that the club has returned to Redcar and hope that it will stay here longterm but that decision will be up to the club organisers.

I'm sure they will do their best, as they have for the 40+ years that the club has been in existance.

Stallion , loved the June Laverick reference as I was a regular in those days.
Tip , DON'T have a walk down memory lane - the pub (Royal Hotel) is now sadly boarded-up.
Jeez I've seen some great performers there, including Planxty when they were just starting up.
Happy days, but as we know ..............

Were you there when the "guest", having been asked if they minded being recorded, started laughing so much when a bamboo stick with a microphone cello taped to it appeared in front of his nose, that he knocked the piano off the stage (cube like movable boxes) onto the poor bloke lying behind the stage with the microphone. I was supposed to be staying with Jonny that night but I ended up going home, I heard the bloke got a broken thigh! Haven't been there since! My leg started to shake uncontrollably and the only way to stop it was to sit on the piano with my feet on the piano stool,
I kid you not the floor singers were ten times better than me, it wasn't til much later that I realised that it was the music hall songs that my grandpa had taught me that made the experience interesting!

"Maybe organisers etc should listen to views of everyone"

In the days when I ran a folk club this sort of comment was normally made very loudly by the one person who disagreed with something that everybody else wanted.

in my opinion,John Taylor and Paul Lucas are good organisers, they have run the club at redcar /saltburn for many years and also the festival for donkeys years.

I have it straight from the horses mouth ........
I was talking to JT this afternoon.
The move to the Bowling Club from the Duke is as permanent as things get.
For one reason or another it's not possible to return to the Duke.
The Thursday night arrangement at the Club will continue for a short while yet, but the Club night will eventually change to a Tuesday night as the Bowling Club will need Thursdays for functions during especially during Summer.
There's lots of plusses and a few minuses to changing to a Tuesday but JT feels it will all work out for the good , and he's been doing it for 40 odd years now.
He's also very pleased about the enthusiastic welcome he has received from the Club and says that the actual room is great for performing.
Good luck from me then.

Thanks Pete
I had heard that but wasn't sure of it's accuratacy so didn't want to post until John had confirmed it.

Yes it is a lovely room and, being a club, the drinks are at very reasonable prices.
It is also very easily accessible by bus and train as well as by car.

It's soft drinks only for me Pete and I really object to having to pay the same amount for a pint of orange squash as for a pint of beer.

I don't mind pubs making a reasonable profit but I hate feeling as if I'm being ripped off.

Hope the club will be able to meet on the Thursday preceding the Saltburn FF (at which/whatever venue, should the bowling season preclude the Bowling Club). This has been a great evening for us ahead of our favourite festival.

A great club and hope it continues to prosper.

John has to do what he thinks is best. The Duke William was more convenient for me for travel. The bus times for me back from the Bowls Club aren't brilliant but the train back to Middlesbrough looks more promising. Pity I would have to buy a train ticket instead of using my bus pass but at least I have a Railcard. I will make another trip to Redcar and time how long it takes to walk to the railway station from the bowls club. Glad the club is continuing - it's a lovely club!

I am also upset about this move why would we want to go all the way to redcar. we have been made very welcome in duke william and friends of mine were in there last week and it is open for busines as usual.this change will mean we have come to rhetorically end of the road and cant do Tuesday. what a shame . . .

Well, if you don't want to go all the way to Redcar, why don't you find a venue near you and organise your own club/session? Or is it just that you would prefer someone else to do all the stuff like that? I mean, does someone pay the organisers to do this, or do they do it out of their own good will? If you can't be bothered to do it and it's someone else's good will that does, then I don't think you have much place to complain. Chris
