Subject: I need any funny songs/parodies about fa From: GUEST,LadyFeyline Date: 28 Feb 13 - 07:38 PM I'm looking for some "G" or "PG" songs concerning fairies. I'm looking for things like "Nobody Loves a Fairy When She's Forty," which I already have. Also have "A Fairy Story" by Brobdignagian Bards. Anyone have any ideas? |
Subject: RE: I need any funny songs/parodies about fa From: Big Al Whittle Date: 28 Feb 13 - 09:32 PM whats a G song, or a PG song? |
Subject: RE: I need any funny songs/parodies about fa From: JohnInKansas Date: 01 Mar 13 - 12:36 AM G and PG are the ratings for movies and TV programs promulgated by the Motion Picture and TV people to pretend that they care how corrupted the youth of America (the US) are. G = General Audiences (all ages admitted) PG = Parental Guidance Recommended (ask your mommy) I believe the "R" rating, Restricted, is still used to mean no one under 18(?) admitted (sometimes with "unless accompanied by an adult"), and in some places "X" or "XXX" means "please don't enter if you're under age since they'll send the operator to jail if you get caught." The terms are used generically for all kinds of literature, art, situations - (but not always favorably and sometimes sarcastically?) John |
Subject: RE: I need any funny songs/parodies about fa From: MGM·Lion Date: 01 Mar 13 - 02:02 AM The Players Theatre, an old-time Music Hall in Villiers Street off the Strand in London, used to sing as a theme song which all their revues started with, with full audience participation, the chorus of a song about ballet girls viewed as fairies, originally from George Leybourne (1842-84), the famed 'Champagne Charlie'. This chorus was Oh the fairies, oh the fairies Nothing but splendour and feminine gender! Oh the fairies, oh the fairies, O for the wing of a fairy queen. The full lyric is at http://monologues.co.uk/musichall/Songs-O/Oh-The-Fairies.htm HTH ~MichaeL~ |
Subject: RE: I need any funny songs/parodies about fa From: Amos Date: 01 Mar 13 - 02:13 AM With our spirits light and airy We'll go out and look for fairies With their little fairy wings so fair. In the garden we'll go sporting Take our clothes off, go cavorting, Just as though real fairies were right there! I dunno any songs about Fairies, but you could put that tot he tune of "Gentlemen Will Please Refrain..." etc. and add some verses for grins. |
Subject: RE: I need any funny songs/parodies about fairies From: MGM·Lion Date: 01 Mar 13 - 03:05 AM You must have thought of Rose Fyleman's poem"There are fairies at the bottom of my garden", set to music. Several versions on youtube & the lyric easily googlable. ~M~ |
Subject: Lyr Add: LET'S ALL BE FAIRIES (Durium Dance Band) From: Long Firm Freddie Date: 01 Mar 13 - 03:28 AM Let's All Be Fairies is certainly one to think about - see Youtube for versions by The Durium Dance Band, Baby Gramps and John Inman (though his version is not for the kiddies really...) John Inman (12 minutes in) LFF Lyrics: LET'S ALL BE FAIRIES by The Durium Dance Band Once upon a time there were two fairies Now, there are a great many! Do you believe in fairies And the stories that never grow old? "There are fairies at the bottom of the garden" That´s a tale we´ve all been told Let´s think of our childhood games Then go back to our baby ways And let´s all be fairies "Tinkle, tinkle! Crash, Crash, Crash!" All dance around and go crazy Waving a buttercup and daisy We´ll go ´whimsey, whomsey´ On tiptoe we´ll say "Dash, dash" Let´s all be fairies "Tinkle, tinkle! Crash, Crash, Crash!" Ding dong, ding dong! Fairy bells are gaily ringing Ding dong, ding dong! Everybody´s gaily singing Dancing round the moonbeams La la la, la la Hear our fairy footsteps Whoops - There we are! Two great big burly boxers Were engaged to appear in the ring Said the slosher to the slogger "I won´t hurt you If you don´t hurt me, old thing" "When we´re in the ring, tonight There´s no reason why we should fight So let´s both be fairies Tinkle, tinkle! Crash, Crash, Crash!" Don´t get annoyed if I shove you You can´t imagine how I love you! We´ll punch flimsey flamsey You go out when I say "Dash" Let´s both be fairies "Tinkle, tinkle! Crash, Crash, Crash!" Ding dong, ding dong! Fairy bells are gaily ringing Ding dong, ding dong! Everybody´s gaily singing Dancing round the moonbeams La la la, la la Hear our fairy footsteps Whoops - There we are! Whoops - Here we are! |

Subject: Lyr Add: THE FAIRIES (William Allingham) From: mayomick Date: 01 Mar 13 - 09:03 AM The Fairies by William Allingham Up the airy mountain Down the rushy glen, We dare n't go a-hunting, For fear of little men; Wee folk, good folk, Trooping all together; Green jacket, red cap, And white owl's feather. Down along the rocky shore Some make their home, They live on crispy pancakes Of yellow tide-foam; Some in the reeds Of the black mountain-lake, With frogs for their watch-dogs, All night awake. High on the hill-top The old King sits; He is now so old and gray He's nigh lost his wits. With a bridge of white mist Columbkill he crosses, On his stately journeys From Slieveleague to Rosses; Or going up with music, On cold starry nights, To sup with the Queen, Of the gay Northern Lights. They stole little Bridget For seven years long; When she came down again Her friends were all gone. They took her lightly back Between the night and morrow; They thought she was fast asleep, But she was dead with sorrow. They have kept her ever since Deep within the lake, On a bed of flag leaves, Watching till she wake. By the craggy hill-side, Through the mosses bare, They have planted thorn trees For pleasure here and there. Is any man so daring As dig them up in spite? He shall find the thornies set In his bed at night. Up the airy mountain Down the rushy glen, We dare n't go a-hunting, For fear of little men; Wee folk, good folk, Trooping all together; Green jacket, red cap, And white owl's feather |
Subject: Lyr Add: NOBODY LOVES A FAIRY WHEN SHE'S FORTY From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 01 Mar 13 - 09:15 AM This one might be less suited to children... You can get a YouTube rendering to give you the tune. NOBODY LOVES A FAIRY WHEN SHE'S FORTY (written by Arthur Le Clerq - 1934) Billy Cotton Tessie O'Shea For years a fairy queen I've been For years I foiled the Demon King But alas I'm getting on the years have flown somehow And I feel that Fairy Snowdrop isn't wanted now Chorus Nobody loves a fairy when she's [forty] fifty Nobody loves a fairy when she's old She may still have a magic power but that is not enough They like their bit of magic from a younger bit of stuff When once your silver star has lost its glitter And your tinsel looks like rust instead of gold Fairy days are ending when your wand has started bending No-one loves a fairy when shes old For years I reigned in Fairy Dell I waved my wand and waved it well If I can't do all I did Im satisfied because I'd sooner be a Has-Been that I would a Never Was Nobody loves.... Nobody loves.. The face of this Immortal One to many has appealed But gone is the illusion once you've had it soled and heeled When you've lost your little fairy dimples And the moth holes in your dress let in the cold The Goblins and the Pixies turn their backs and say Hi Nixey No one loves a fairy when she's old. Nobody loves..... Nobody loves..... As far as I can see they try to push you off the map When once your wand has withered and your wings refuse to flap When you can't cast a spell without it spilling And a fairy tale for years you haven't told You stand there shouting What O.. but they all pass by your Grotto Nobody loves a fairy when shes old. Nobody loves..... Nobody loves..... They don't give you an earthly chance to make a livelihood Theyre building council houses now in my enchanted wood When you are past the age for Television And the air you use is government controlled It seems that they would sooner Listen to a blinkin' crooner Nobody loves a fairy when shes old. |

Subject: RE: I need any funny songs/parodies about fairies From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 01 Mar 13 - 10:09 AM Hello, Lady F. Your request intrigued me, so I did a little searching, but with no luck. I can offer you a poem about fairies which is charming rather than outright humorous, and that's "Ting, Ting Ting" by Lewis Carroll. You can find it on the net in various places. You'll have to make up your own tune, but that's easy to do. |
Subject: RE: I need any funny songs/parodies about fairies From: GUEST Date: 01 Mar 13 - 10:33 AM Having a warped mind and an Evil sense of humour , the first thing I thought of was the rewrite of New York Girls ! But that is probably not G or PG ! |
Subject: RE: I need any funny songs/parodies about fairies From: Jim Carroll Date: 01 Mar 13 - 10:47 AM There's always the STORY of the little man with his arms around a tree claiming to be a fairy tree measurer - but that's definitely X rated and strictly for PMs only. Jim Carroll |
Subject: RE: I need any funny songs/parodies about fairies From: GUEST Date: 01 Mar 13 - 09:13 PM A little risque is OK, double entendre to an extent is fine. I'm definitely going for an "if the kids get the jokes it's not my fault" type thing. Nobody Loves a Fairy... is the basis for the whole show, so anything along those lines is perfect. |
Subject: RE: I need any funny songs/parodies about fairies From: GUEST Date: 01 Mar 13 - 09:40 PM JOHN INMAN IS THE BEST!!!! :) |
Subject: RE: I need any funny songs/parodies about fairies From: GUEST,.gargoyle Date: 01 Mar 13 - 09:52 PM A song from the grade level one "British/American School" Manila songbook. circa 1955 There was a little man standing in the woods with a purple coat and a small black hood? Sincerely, Gargoyle the song references a botanical "Jack-in - the Pulpet" a swamp~lanp plant. |
Subject: RE: I need any funny songs/parodies about fairies From: GUEST,MorwenEdhelwen1 Date: 02 Mar 13 - 06:33 AM The poem "Down In The Valley" from The Hobbit, a song sung by the Elves of Imladris/Rivendell when Thorin and Company arrive, to tease the Dwarves? Starts, "O what are you doing, And where are you going.... A musical setting of it is in the 1977 Rankin Bass animated Hobbit movie. There's also Chip the glasses, crack the plates, that's what Bilbo Baggins hates. |
Subject: RE: I need any funny songs/parodies about fairies From: Ron Davies Date: 02 Mar 13 - 07:47 AM Obviously there are songs that mention fairies in "Iolanthe". And of course it's great music also--though probably not easy for an audience unfamiliar with it to join in. |
Subject: RE: I need any funny songs/parodies about fairies From: Midchuck Date: 02 Mar 13 - 08:17 AM I vaguely recall a lot of them from high school and college in the '50s, but I'm sure they aren't what you're looking for... Peter |
Subject: RE: I need any funny songs/parodies about fairies From: Ron Davies Date: 02 Mar 13 - 08:34 AM Say it ain't so, Peter. |
Subject: RE: I need any funny songs/parodies about fairies From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 02 Mar 13 - 10:19 AM Whose idea was this? It's just not a workable concept, because the music you are looking for isn't out there. Fairy songs seem to move from sweet, charming songs to rather nasty ditties making puns on 'fairy' as homosexual. You seem to be caught in the middle of something, and I suggest you get out of it. |
Subject: RE: I need any funny songs/parodies about fairies From: GUEST,John Foxen Date: 02 Mar 13 - 12:21 PM Heed not the defeatist Leeneeenia. Mudcatters can usually turn up something worthwhile. For example what about Ariel's song from The Tempest Where the bee sucks, there suck I: In a cowslip's bell I lie; There I couch when owls do cry. On the bat's back I do fly After summer merrily. Merrily, merrily shall I live now Under the blossom that hangs on the bough. Here's one setting Where the bee sucks |
Subject: RE: I need any funny songs/parodies about fairies From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 02 Mar 13 - 01:05 PM Of course in Shakespeare's time they used the long initial s that looks like an f. Must have made for a little confusion. |
Subject: RE: I need any funny songs/parodies about fairies From: Ron Davies Date: 02 Mar 13 - 01:35 PM If she could sing something from "Iolanthe", as I noted earlier, that is good music--including some of Sullivan's best melodies. |
Subject: RE: I need any funny songs/parodies about fairies From: GUEST,LadyFeyline Date: 03 Mar 13 - 07:59 AM I've looked into Iolanthe and I could easily handle the vocals, but I haven't seen a lot that's actually "faerie." I know the story, but most of the songs don't really seem to be ABOUT fairies. I have thought of trying something with "Tripping hither, tripping thither" though. Do you have any other specific suggestions? |
Subject: RE: I need any funny songs/parodies about fairies From: Ron Davies Date: 03 Mar 13 - 10:00 PM Strephon is half a fairy. I think Iolanthe is a full fairy. There are choruses by fairies. I fail to see why "Iolanthe" is not "fairy". Yes, it's a political satire. But as you note, "Tripping Hither" is in fact sung by a chorus of fairies. And it may well not be what you are looking for. But very few songs of any kind are about fairies. Maybe there's something with Tinkerbell or a fairy of that sort. But other than something like that-- and the two songs you mention in the OP--you have a tough assignment. There are probably vocal settings of parts of "Midsummer NIght's Dream", which also has fairies. |
Subject: RE: I need any funny songs/parodies about fairies From: Ron Davies Date: 03 Mar 13 - 10:25 PM Also, I assume you have checked the 'Songs of Faery' thread. |
Subject: RE: I need any funny songs/parodies about fairies From: Taconicus Date: 03 Mar 13 - 10:56 PM Well… I know a funny song about a vicar and a talking frog, at least one of whom may have turned out to be a kind of fairy… in one sense, anyway. |
Subject: RE: I need any funny songs/parodies about fairies From: Big Al Whittle Date: 03 Mar 13 - 11:08 PM face it - you're going to have to write the songs yourself Do parodies of other songs Fairy Across the Mersey Fairy's a jolly good fellow If you're a fairy and you know it , clap your hands I've been a wild fairy for many a year You can play with my wand, if you buy me beer |
Subject: RE: I need any funny songs/parodies about fairies From: Ron Davies Date: 04 Mar 13 - 11:58 AM "wild fairy..."--excellent. Even if by some chance it's not used by the OP. |
Subject: Lyr Add: THE GOBLIN From: Kenny B (inactive) Date: 04 Mar 13 - 04:10 PM THE GOBLIN Twas on the open moorland, the rain was beating fast and through the dripping heather a goblin hurried past. his eyes were green and cunning his hair extremely red, he had a green umbrella which he held above his head. He chanced to meet a fairy whose clothes were very wet, as she had no umbrella he wished they'd never met. "Please will you allow me" the little fairy cried, "To share your green umbrella whilst walking by your side?" "Pooh nonsense" said the goblin "Cannot you plainly see, that under my umbrella there is only room for me!" he laughed and went on gaily, his clothes completely dry & left that little fairy to sit alone & cry. but as he crossed the moorland, the wind with angry din took hold of his umbrella, and turned it outside in. hurrah! exclaimed the hedgehog, I am extremely glad, I saw your rude behaviour - and it fairly made me mad. he rolled the goblin over, then hurried back to help the little fairy upon her homeward track. and left the wicked goblin, to try with might and main, to mend his green umbrella, which let in all the rain. |

Clash, crash! Crush, smash! Hammer and tongs! Knocker and gongs! Pound, pound, far underground! Ho, ho! my lad! Swish, smack! Whip crack! Batter and beat! Yammer and bleat! Work, work! Nor dare to shirk, While Goblins quaff, and Goblins laugh, Round and round far underground Below, my lad! From The Hobbit. |
Subject: Lyr: YOU PICKED A FINE TIME TO LEAVE ME YOU SEAL From: John P Date: 16 May 13 - 10:34 AM How about a silkie song? YOU PICKED A FINE TIME TO LEAVE ME YOU SEAL lyrics: Elizabeth Ann Scarborough set to: You Picked a Fine Time to Leave Me Lucille CHORUS: You picked a fine time to leave me, you seal. The babe that I bore you just makes my head real. He'll only eat kippers, has four lovely flippers, Wants to dive down the well for his meals. You picked a fine time to leave me, you seal. You are a selkie or that's what you tell me Though I'd have sworn you were a man. A right comely boy-o, you gave me much joy O, but I never did understand I'd have cause to re-gret once you got your feet wet But a selkie as I've come to know, On hitting the water can swim like an otter And balance a ball on his nose (chorus) Though we parted friendly I think you should send me Some child support, that is my wish Since I moved to Ohio, it's hard oh, you'll never know To just keep that poor kid in fish. And if I ever remarry it must be to some faerie Of selkie descent or at least To some understanding and most undemanding guy In the employ of Greenpeace. (chorus) |
Subject: RE: I need any funny songs/parodies about fairies From: JohnInKansas Date: 16 May 13 - 12:43 PM An old thread here at Lyr Req: Nobody Loves a Fairy when She's Forty ran from Dec 1998 to Jan 2011 and contains several variations on the lyrics. A fairly early post (From: alison Date: 15 Dec 98 - 06:27 AM) posted an ABC for the tune. I never tried the tune, but there were no comments so I assume it worked okay. There are numerous links to YouTube and other performances, but as old as the posts where they're given are by now it's unlikely that all of them are still functional, although some might be still good. Some of the discussion may be worth a look on its own merits. At least one link claimed to produce sheet music. ***** A "nit to be picked" with John P's post of "You Seal" just above, in the second line of the chorus I believe the original publication of the lyrics in SingOut! was "... just makes my head reel." (I type with both left thumbs more than you do, John P.) John |
Subject: RE: I need any funny songs/parodies about fairies From: John P Date: 16 May 13 - 02:40 PM Yes, "makes my head reel" makes a lot more sense. Sorry, I copied and pasted without proofing. The idea of having a fake head that becomes real is interesting, though, in a Pinocchioan sort of way. |
Subject: Lyr Add: THE FAIRIES' FAREWELL (Bp Richard Corbet) From: Ged Fox Date: 16 May 13 - 04:47 PM http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMj7O9LZpU8 A song that would have been considered funny/satirical when it was written, in the mid-seventeenth century. THE FAIRIES' FAREWELL by Bishop Richard Corbet Farewell rewards and fairies, Good housewives now may say, For now foul sluts in dairies Do fare as well as they. And tho' they sweep their hearths no less Than maids were wont to do, Yet who of late for cleanliness Finds sixpence in her shoe? Lament, lament, old Abbeys, The Fairies' lost command! They did but change Priests' babies, But some have changed your land. And all your children, sprung from thence, Are now grown Puritans, Who live as Changelings ever since For love of your domains. At morning and at evening both They merry were and glad, So little care of sleep or sloth These pretty ladies had; When Tom came home from labour, Or Cis to milking rose, Then merrily went their tabor, And nimbly went their toes Witness those rings and roundelays Of theirs, which yet remain, Were footed in Queen Mary's days On many a grassy plain; But since of late, Elizabeth, And later, James came in, They never danced on any heath As when the time hath been. By which we note the Fairies Were of the old Profession. Their songs were "Ave Mary"s, Their dances were Procession. But now, alas, they all are dead; Or gone beyond the seas; Or farther for Religion fled; Or else they take their ease. A tell-tale in their company They never could endure! And whoso kept not secretly Their mirth, was punished, sure; It was a just and Christian deed To pinch such black and blue. Oh how the commonwealth doth want Such Justices as you! Now they have left our quarters, A register they have, Who can preserve their charters, A man both wise and grave; A hundred of their merry pranks By one that I could name Are kept in store; con twenty thanks To William for the same. To William Chourne of Staffordshire Give land and praises due, Who every meal can mend your cheer With tales both old and true; To William all give audience, And pray ye for his noddle, For all the fairies' evidence Were lost, if that were addle. |
Subject: RE: I need any funny songs/parodies about fairies From: Crowhugger Date: 16 May 13 - 04:59 PM Have you checked youtube for filk? Some is fan music based on popular characters of the spec-fiction world, other is music by writers to complement their own stories that may or may not have been published anywhere. No bets on how much of it will be about fairies (vs other spec-fic beings) or how much is pleasant to your ear, never mind actually good. And unfortunately youtube has a decidedly unsophisticated search facility for separating music from other kinds of filk postings. |
Subject: RE: I need any funny songs/parodies about fairies From: Susan of DT Date: 16 May 13 - 05:45 PM If you put "fairy" and "fairies" in the search box for the digital tradition, you will get long lists of songs. |
Subject: RE: I need any funny songs/parodies about fairies From: Ron Davies Date: 16 May 13 - 06:42 PM Great contribution, John P. Folkie audiences are of course the most likely to appreciate it--they'll probably know Kenny Rogers as well as the Great Silkie. I think it has real potential. |

Subject: RE: I need any funny songs/parodies about fairies From: GUEST,Lewis Jones Date: 12 May 17 - 07:06 AM My father, originally from Blackheath in England's industrial West Midlands, used to add the following to the opening couplet of William Allingham's fairy poem "Up the airy mountain": Then up jumped a fellow named bottle nose Dick Said he would do us a conjuring trick Before you could look or before you could appear He'd drunk down another bloke's glass of beer The owner of the beer was so pleased at the joke He hoped Dick would die of a paralytic stroke Haul up the anchor pull out the sail Never tie a knot in a guinea pig's tail I hope I will remember never to forget To use an umbrella when it turns out wet He, and also my mother (originally from Digbeth in downtown Birmingham, England), knew other parodies. There was this, for example, of "Old King Cole": Old King Cole was a merry old soul And a merry old soul was he He called for a light in the middle of the night To go to the WC The moon shone on the closet door The candle had a fit Old King Cole fell down the hole, And stuck to a piece of tape. (My mother, from whom I learnt this song, although lowly born, was virtuous and well-governed.) "I Dreamt I Dwelt in Marble Halls" from Balfe's 'Bohemian Girl' (1843) was parodied thus: I dreamt I was tickling my granddad's bald head With a piece of oiled cloth (?) and a feathuar But when I awoke I did find it no joke He was tanning my a*** with some leathuah. On Bayley and Bishop's 1830s song "Mistletoe Bough" we had this: The mistletoe hung on the closet wall The robbers they came and they stole it all The old man came out with a great big stick And knocked them all into a barrel of........ (Chorus) O the mistletoe bough aw aw O what a miserable row. |
Subject: RE: I need any funny songs/parodies about fairies From: Joe_F Date: 12 May 17 - 08:17 PM "The Ballad of Minepit Shaw" by Kipling deals with the subject, with a certain skepticism: But whether the man was a poacher too Or a pharisee so bold -- I reckon there's more things told than are true, And more things true than are told. |
