Subject: Wanted Irish music for Mudcat Radio From: alison Date: 03 Nov 99 - 08:05 PM Aine requested some Irish music on Mudcat Radio tonight. Max needs recordings of Mudcatters playing Irish music. Some of you are bound to have some...... how about sending it in. He has a CD of Alan and I somewhere.. it has some on it. Anyone else??? slainte alison |
Subject: RE: Wanted Irish music for Mudcat Radio From: Áine Date: 04 Nov 99 - 08:10 AM Thanks Alison, for posting this so quickly for us! I thought of at least three CDs I can spare to send to Max for the show. Come on guys! Surely between the lot of us who are always on the 'gaelic' threads (as Bert calls them), we can come up with some things that Max and Bert can play. -- Áine |
Subject: RE: Wanted Irish music for Mudcat Radio From: Musicman Date: 04 Nov 99 - 12:23 PM Mine is one the way, should be there anytime!!! (good ol' canada post!!) musicman |
Subject: RE: Wanted Irish music for Mudcat Radio From: MMario Date: 04 Nov 99 - 12:44 PM or if you PLAY - then make .wav files, or .mpg files, or get Mediaring, or record a cassette and e-mail, snail-mail your OWN stuff...... shucks, if he played my tape, he'll certainly play some of yours! MMario |
Subject: RE: Wanted Irish music for Mudcat Radio From: Alice Date: 04 Nov 99 - 12:51 PM Max, sorry I haven't had time to Mudcat for awhile. I'm still trying to get the tape finished. I'll send as soon as I can. I have some that I've recorded from our sessions here a couple of years ago. |
Subject: RE: Wanted Irish music for Mudcat Radio From: Sandy Paton Date: 04 Nov 99 - 01:41 PM Okay. Max: I'll send you two of our recent releases - Ceol Anam (Irish Guitar duets) and All Hands Around (Irish instrumentals and songs), plus a copy of Liam's Brother's CD, Irish Ballads and Songs of the Sea. That oughta help fill the void. Sandy |
Subject: RE: Wanted Irish music for Mudcat Radio From: JedMarum Date: 04 Nov 99 - 02:21 PM I'll send a package in soon. |
Subject: RE: Wanted Irish music for Mudcat Radio From: Martin _Ryan Date: 04 Nov 99 - 03:16 PM Roscommon CD on the way. Regards |
Subject: RE: Wanted Irish music for Mudcat Radio From: Mbo Date: 04 Nov 99 - 03:38 PM Would a .wav or mpeg file of me playing really be acceptable? If so, I can send you some of my stuff. --Mbo |
Subject: RE: Wanted Irish music for Mudcat Radio From: MMario Date: 04 Nov 99 - 03:44 PM Max has played audio files, audio cassettes, etc. I believe he did ask somehwere (gee - don't understand why I would have problems finding anything around here) that you "crunch the file" into the smallest possible format. Goldwave is a good program for shrinking audio files down and retaining a format that most people can play. |
Subject: RE: Wanted Irish music for Mudcat Radio From: Lonesome EJ Date: 04 Nov 99 - 03:49 PM I'll send a tape. Any one have Max's snailmail address? |

Subject: RE: Wanted Irish music for Mudcat Radio From: Áine Date: 04 Nov 99 - 06:14 PM Thanks to everyone for responding 'to the call'!!! Since there seems to be a bit of confusion about the 'how' of sending music to Max for air play on MCR, I've sent a message to him to come on the thread and explain to us what our options are. Hopefully, we'll hear from him soon. I can't wait to hear all of you! Keep up the good work! -- Áine |
Subject: RE: Wanted Irish music for Mudcat Radio From: Mbo Date: 04 Nov 99 - 08:13 PM Is it just me, or do the rest of you folks think there should be a web page where you can go and listen to various 'Catters' music? Maybe an addition to bbc's Mudcat Resources page? I think it would be a really good idea, since I heard you all talk about music, I would really like to hear the music you PLAY, which is why you're all here in the first place, isn't it? |
Subject: RE: Wanted Irish music for Mudcat Radio From: MMario Date: 04 Nov 99 - 09:55 PM I believe Max has that in mind for the future....when there is a large enough collection... MMario |
Subject: RE: Wanted Irish music for Mudcat Radio From: Áine Date: 05 Nov 99 - 03:58 PM Hi Guys! I sent a song (acapella) by voicemail via MediaRing to Jon, alison and MMario today, but upon playing it back, I heard several 'breaks' in the transmission. So, perhaps that wouldn't be a good way to send material to Max. Being new to this particular way of doing things, I don't know if this is normal or not. Any comments or suggestions? Thanks in advance, Áine |
Subject: RE: Wanted Irish music for Mudcat Radio From: MMario Date: 05 Nov 99 - 04:15 PM "there are ways around that" he said, mysteriously. "But I would jepardize my standing in the "Gang of 12,692 (base 6)" if I told you what they were" Seriously - lemmee try some "tricks" and see if they work, then I will post results. MMario |
Subject: RE: Wanted Irish music for Mudcat Radio From: Áine Date: 05 Nov 99 - 04:35 PM Thank you muchly, MMario!! |
Subject: RE: Wanted Irish music for Mudcat Radio From: Áine Date: 08 Nov 99 - 08:55 AM REFRESH -- (aaah, I feel better already!) ;-) |
Subject: RE: Wanted Irish music for Mudcat Radio From: MMario Date: 08 Nov 99 - 09:19 AM okay - I have found this out....you get far fewer "breaks" in a mediaring message if after the first time through you break your internet connection and play it with as little open on your computer as possible. It should be possible to record using sound recorder as you playback, but my computer doesn't have enough memory to run mediaring and sound recorder at the same tiem, so I wasn't able to check that out. |
Subject: RE: Wanted Irish music for Mudcat Radio From: Alan of Australia Date: 08 Nov 99 - 09:39 AM G'day, If it's any help, the Mudcat Radio theme song Alison & I recorded was mixed down to a .wav file & then converted to MP3. I then emailed it to Max. In internet terms they're still pretty big files so they take a while to send & receive, a few minutes at least. Wave files are MUCH too big to email. MP3 files are better quality IMHO than alternatives like Real Audio or MediaRing but can't (practically) be played live - you need to download first, then play. I think I'll email Max an MP3 of our recording of The Atholl Highlanders.
Cheers, |
Subject: RE: Wanted Irish music for Mudcat Radio From: alison Date: 09 Nov 99 - 12:33 AM I've already posted him the CD alan.. he should get it soon... Aine... Mediaring works better if you use the phone number rather than the email number... but you would need Max to be a Mediaring user and have his modem line phone number. If you listen to the start of "Mudcat Radio 3 (I think) " ou can hear me doing a song at the very start via Mediaring. slainte alison |
Subject: RE: Wanted Irish music for Mudcat Radio From: Áine Date: 09 Nov 99 - 10:42 AM Thanks to everyone for the advise! My computer savvy hubby (soon to posting here as 'dinopop') says that he can do the MP3 format. Now I just need to know how to make SURE that Max gets the sound file. What's the best way to email him and to give him a heads up that the file is coming via email? I sure hope that he's gotten (or will get soon) some great Irish music for tomorrow night -- I know that we'll all be listening with bated breath -- or would that be 'baited' breath (haha)! Be sure and get our your kazoos to play along with the 'Mudcat Tavern Anthem'!!! -- Áine |
Subject: RE: Wanted Irish music for Mudcat Radio From: MMario Date: 09 Nov 99 - 11:39 AM Most browsers can be set to ask for a reciept when the mail is delivered, and/or when the mail is opened. If you did that, then you could know his mailbox got it and at least that it was opened. if you don't get the 2nd reciept, then you can phone him on the show and nag him "Why don't you read your mail?" *grin* |
Subject: RE: Wanted Irish music for Mudcat Radio From: Mían Date: 09 Nov 99 - 12:33 PM does the mudcat tavern anthem resemble the soldier's song? (tee hee) |
Subject: RE: Wanted Irish music for Mudcat Radio From: Áine Date: 09 Nov 99 - 04:45 PM The 'soldier's song', no. Just close your eyes, put your kazoo up to your lips, twirl around with wild abandon and imagine yourself at the county fair and you're just about to fall under the hooves of the carousel ponies!!! OH, and don't forget to BLOW... -- Áine |
Subject: RE: Wanted Irish music for Mudcat Radio From: MMario Date: 09 Nov 99 - 04:50 PM AAAAARRRGGGHHHHH! I have this feeling I will be plagued by nightmares now, stuck on a carousel while the music of the "MudCat Tavern" and "The Blue Clicky Thing" play on a Calliope! and that blasted brass ring will always be JUST out of reach.... |
Subject: RE: Wanted Irish music for Mudcat Radio From: Áine Date: 09 Nov 99 - 05:54 PM I know, I know -- I keep asking how to do this -- BUT -- OK -- I've got the file into an MP3 format. And I want to email it to Max so he can download it and play it. BUT, the only way of sending Max a message I can find is through a 'personal' message on the 'Cat. QUESTION #56 FOR THE DAY IS: How do I attach an MP3 file to a 'personal' Mudcat message? I know I'm being a pest about this -- If I'm able to get this silly song to Max and he does play it -- FEEL FREE TO THROW ANY ROTTEN DISGUSTING VEGGIES AT ME IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT. (My children have done this to me for years, so I'm used to it). Thanks (again and again and again), Áine |
Subject: RE: Wanted Irish music for Mudcat Radio From: Jeri Date: 09 Nov 99 - 06:03 PM Áine, you can't send the file with a personal message - you have to e-mail him. I can't ever find the address, but I think it's contribute@mudcat.org Somebody please help if I'm wrong. |
Subject: RE: Wanted Irish music for Mudcat Radio From: Mían Date: 09 Nov 99 - 07:08 PM there's also blues@mudcat.org for an e-mail address |
Subject: RE: Wanted Irish music for Mudcat Radio From: MMario Date: 09 Nov 99 - 11:23 PM or max@mudcat.org |
Subject: RE: Wanted Irish music for Mudcat Radio From: Áine Date: 10 Nov 99 - 09:11 AM SUCCESS!! Hubby and I threw the MP3 file of the MCT Anthem into the ethernet this morning at about 2 a.m. and aimed it at 'contribute@mudcat.org' -- now it's up to the pantheon of internet spirits to see if Max gets it. Let us all wave our kazoos and slide whistles in the hopes that it does. (Don't forget you can find the lyrics in the 'Mudcat Tavern #17' thread) Thanks to all of you for helping me get it together! I just hope you don't regret it later (hee hee). See on the MCR! -- Áine |
Subject: RE: Wanted Irish music for Mudcat Radio From: Áine Date: 11 Nov 99 - 10:24 AM Fellow Irish Music lovers and devotees -- don't let last night's crash of the MCR deter you from sending in your music! Let's just look at it as some extra time in which to get our favorite songs to Max. I do have another 'techie' question. Last night, before the bottom dropped out, Max mentioned something about normalizing the MP3 files before we sent them to him. On the song I sent to him, I did normalize the .WAV file before I converted it to MP3. My question is: Do I need to normalize the MP3 file after conversion also? Don't worry -- I won't be re-doing the MCT Anthem. For those of you who did hear it, I think once was enough! But, I am going to be working on An Mhaighdean Mhara this week to send in for next week's show, and I want to do it right; particularly since this one will be mostly acapella with a little whistle for background. Slan, Áine |
Subject: RE: Wanted Irish music for Mudcat Radio From: Áine Date: 15 Nov 99 - 06:42 PM I know it looks like I'm talking to myself . . . but, I just wanted to remind everyone about sending things in to Max and Bert. And I never did get an answer to my question about whether you have to 'normalize' an MP3 file after you convert it from a 'normalized' .WAV file. Anyone know the answer? I was also perusing the MP3.com site today and found some pretty decent free downloads of what they call 'Celtic' music. I was wondering -- if one of us downloaded a file from this site we wanted Max to play on the MCR, and sent it to him, would it be 'legal' for him to play it? I just don't want to get the boy in any more trouble with the unseen, unwashed, three-horned purple people eaters. -- Áine |
Subject: RE: Wanted Irish music for Mudcat Radio From: MMario Date: 15 Nov 99 - 09:24 PM if it isn't public domain (and I don't see how any MP3 file possible could be - given the age of the technology) then you would need the permission of the performers and/or the copyright holder. If the mp3 is of public domain material (which is possible) you should still get permission of the creator of the mp3 - at least that is how I read the various copyright statures.... |
Subject: RE: Wanted Irish music for Mudcat Radio From: Alice Date: 23 Nov 99 - 12:41 PM I know this is late, but I can't believe I actually got it done at all. I recorded a cassette today and it's in the mail to the Mudcat. 'The Mudcat Rocks of Bawn' and the love song verson of 'The Foggy Dew', both a cappella, and three tunes I recorded long ago at our session. Two of them are played by a Norwegian woman who was here doing her master's degree at the University. She played 'Whiskey Before Breakfast' and then a Norwegian tune - great. I hope you enjoy it. alice flynn |

By the way, for Mudcat Radio announcements of Mudcatters hap'nin's: I will be playing the YO Ranch in Dallas on Friday (11/26)from 7PM to 11 and the Celtic Quill on Saturday (11/27) from 9PM to 1. Both of these places are in the heart of Dallas's West End. I will also do a guest appearance at The Balcony Club on Monday evening (11/29) from 8:30 to 9:30. Subject: RE: Wanted Irish music for Mudcat Radio From: buster Date: 23 Nov 99 - 11:21 PM Hi, I'm a new cat. I'm in the Irish Breakfast Band, and I'm sending Max a copy of our first cd, called Sean's Treasure. The band is based in Alexandria, VA, and metro DC. We meet every Saturday morning for breakfast, and then practice for a couple of hours. We have a hard time fitting into each other's homes, each Saturday, because there are approximately 20 in the band. We've been doing this for 15 years, or so! It was a pleasure to meet several of you at the recent FSGW Getaway, at Prince William Forest, in VA. My wife, Carol, and I attended, and we enjoyed meeting you and hearing you sing and perform! cHuCk MoRaN (buster) |
Subject: RE: Wanted Irish music for Mudcat Radio From: caripike@loop.com Date: 24 Nov 99 - 02:08 AM A Los Angeles based band named "The Twilight Lords" have just released their first CD entitled "The White Seahorse" The title track is based on the life of Grace O'Malley or "Grainuaille" the legendary Irish sea-captain. This is one of the best Irish albums I've ever heard. These guys are incredible! They are very original, and the traditional tunes (jigs and reels) are wonderful. They Rock! Please consider this music it deserves to be heard. twlghtlrds@aol or 818 545-7589 or I'll send you my copy! caripike@loop.com |

Subject: RE: Wanted Irish music for Mudcat Radio From: Áine Date: 24 Nov 99 - 08:56 AM Way to go, Chuck! It'll be great to hear you guys! Think you might be opening up a 'branch' down here in Texas sometime? Skarpi -- Max played one of your band's songs last Wednesday on the Mudcat Radio and it was wonderful! That was one of the first songs I learned to sing in Irish and I had never heard that song recorded before. You did a wonderful job! Send more, please. Caripike -- if you want to hear it on the Mudcat, why don't you send it in? Be sure and tell Max why you like this recording so much, too. Regards to all, Áine |
Subject: RE: Wanted Irish music for Mudcat Radio From: buster Date: 26 Nov 99 - 10:22 PM Aine, Irish Breakfast Band doesn't have a Texas branch yet, but we've had band members in Mongolia and Namibia (in the Peace Corps). I heard on an archived Mudcat Radio show that you were calling the show from Arlington (Texas). My wife and I are also in Arlington (Virginia)! cHuCk MoRaN |
