as sung by "Yankee" John Galusha (1859-1950) of Minerva NY, recorded by Marjorie Lansing Porter on October 25, 1949, and transcribed by Lee Knight.

Galusha sang a fair number of Irish songs and ballads that he'd learned in the lumberwoods and elsewhere in the Adirondack Mountain region of New York State. Many of his pieces have also been collected in Newfoundland and the Maritimes.

I can find no reference to this song, online or elsewhere.

Diamonds of the Daree looks dismal today

REFRAIN: repeat the last two lines of each verse

Some elements of this are familiar from "Johnny, Lovely Johnny" (if that's the title - I'll check it out). I'll chase up some references when I have time...

There are no other US versions listed in the Roud index or in the Traditional Ballad Index. Possibly a first appearance on this side of the pond.

I'd think the first line is a mishearing of

The Diamand in Derry looks dismal today

referring to the square of that name in the heart of the city.

Yes - there are versions starting "The Diamond in Derry is..." in addition to the more familiar ""The High Walls of Derry are...", according to John Moulden - who knows about these things.

Well, it a square, but The Diamond is much better name to call it.

This set me thinking about The Diamontina Drover, and wondering whether the name of the river in tQueensland might have been from a homesick Derry man. But in fact it turns out it's from the wife of 19th century Queensland governor, who was a Venetian lady. Lovely song anyway.
