In the late seventies/early eighties I used to go to Preston and Garstang Folk Clubs. There was a guy who used to sing a song about a Portugese man but that is all I remember. Anyone any ideas please.. or can even remember the man and the song?

Derek Brimstone's funny but very non PC "She loved a Portugese" perhaps..."I didn't like Portugese in general/And in particular I didn't like him..."

Pete's song is 'I Only Spoke Portuguese' by Bill Worsfold from New Zealand. Now also sung by Nic Jones.

Johnny Fernan was a Portuguese man? A chanty version of "Long Time Ago."

The Brimstone song mentioned above appears to be a variant of 'The Maid From Cabra West' which may be found on Frank Harte's 'Daybreak and a Candle-End' Spin CD 995.

So which was earlier? Brimstones was 1960's at the latest.

I Only Spoke Portuguese is also in the thread I linked above.

In that thread Martin Ryan also says that Frank Harte in latter years was aware of the London origin of the song (The Maid From Cabra West). There was no real information on where the Dublin version came from.
