Yeah, Ed Hicks is a great teacher and gives one on one lessons as well as teaching at cecil sharp house.

Yeah, Will, what I was basically saying about Pete Stanley is that I'm not sure he's a great teacher. Very good banjo player though - and his house is really something else, with banjos of various kinds on every surface.

I would recommend Dick Smith. Or alternatively, the Saturday morning banjo lessons at Cecil Sharp House are a lot of fun, taught by Ed Hicks. It's frailing style (no three finger) but you start learning tunes immediately.

Saw Pete Stanley with Wizz Jones many years ago. I also saw a TV prog where Frank Skinner was taught to play banjo but didn't get on too well with Pete Stanley. I believe he has a bit of a reputation for putting people off but still a great exponent of banjo.

Heard a great one from John Hartford. Man's in an airport, carrying a banjo case, approaching the security barrier. The guard singles him out and beckons him over to the table.
   Says, "Excuse me, Sir, could you put that case on the table, please?"
   The man does so.
   The guard says, 'Now could you open up the case, please?"
   Sweating nervously, the man does so. Inside, for all to see, is a dismantled AK-47, a half pound of plastic explosives, and a map of the capital city with sensitive locations circled in red.
   The guard looks at for a minute, and says, "OK, you can close it up and proceed. You have a nice day, Sir. For a minute, I thought there was a banjo in there."

I `ad one of them `opeful youngsters in my cab the other day wanting to do something in the folk music line. `e was `alf way there with `is beard trying to sprout and `is dad`s leather covered tankard.
`e said, "Cheers Jim. `ere, you and your band do the clubs down this neck of the woods. Where d`you reckon I could find a good banjo teacher?"
I said, "If I was you I`d try Euston Station. I saw one there last Friday, although, on second thoughts, the mob was only a few minutes be`ind!!"
