Spotify doesn't have Chris Wood's recording, but YouTube has several videos of live performances by Chris Wood at various folk festivals. This transcription is a composite; I had to listen to 2 of them because the first broke off before the end! I noticed that a few words varied from one performance to the next.

Popular music often shamelessly searches for this effect, sometimes successfully even with hard-boiled intellectuals.

Speaking to the heart is a property common to most music, including all good music - even Baroque or electronic etc. The list would be too long for a thread.

So many to choose from but I remember being reduced to tears by Chris Wood singing 'One In A Million' at Sidmouth and feeling quite self conscious. Then I looked around and saw most of the audience was in the same state. An amazing song and a wonderful experience live.

Someone has already mentioned Mary Chapin Carpenter; "Jubilee" always reduces me to a puddle. Something about the words and the tune and the sentiment and the references and the musicians - especially that, the way most of the song is very laid-back, just guitar and drums and then all of a sudden there's pipes and bass and violin and everything else making a contribution, then we're back to just voice and guitar again. Wonderful.

I remember Rainy Night in Georgia at the time the song was out. Perfect.

And my pick for Freddy Fender is "Before the Next Teardrop Falls". I love to sing it too--especially the Spanish verse.

But Freddy is just wonderful no matter what he sings--and "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights" is right up there. i also really like his "After the Fire Is Gone"--again with his Spanish verse.

The Carlene Carter song is very nice, however, it is note for note the same song musically speaking as Don Williams "I'll Be Loving You" from the 70s... I know because I used to do the Don Williams song back then...

As for songs that speak to my heart there is a spooky one that I still do from time to time by Blind Lemon Jefferson who was found frozen to death on the streets of Chicago at a young age of about 32... It's entitled "One Kind Favor" where Blind Lemon all but writes the final chapter of his life... Some folks may know this song as "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean"...
