Does anyone recall a song called "Homemade Aeroplane," recorded by a
British female singer sometime in the late '60s / very early '70s?
It was the soundtrack to a film clip showing various airplanes
(none homemade) taking off and landing, shown several times on the
US children's TV show "Captain Kangaroo."
I have never been able to find any scrap of evidence that this song exists except in my memory. Does this ring any bells?

The British Library and Oxford University have copies of the sheet music for a song described thus:

THE HOME-MADE AEROPLANE
Words and music by Fred Hastings
London : Francis, Day & Hunter, ©1913.

First line: "I like a man who aspires to fame."

This information is from WorldCat.org.

Have a look at this disc: Linda Bennett singing :If You Let Me Make Love To You (Then Why Can't I Touch You), B/w Home Made Aeroplane. There appear to be several promo copies for sale. It's a 7" 45rpm disc, Command 4134, and a copy Here (more expensive copy by the look of it) dates it to 1970, so it's the right sort of time. The song was written by Jacky Taylor and Pat Ryan. (If you're looking for a copy - if it might be the right song - then I think there were copied for about $5 available.

Mick

Hi, I have that record by Linda Bennett---Home Made Aeroplane---because I was looking for it too when I saw your post here. I found a copy on Ebay---and it is the song from Captain Kangaroo. It is nearly the same as I remember it. Great memories.

Yes I remember the sound exactly as you described. I even had a recording of it at one time. The group that sang it sounded very close to the group from Sweden called Abba , Alvarado very seriously it was them. I would love to find a copy of it myself and like you I have looked for one or many years. It's not in your imagination, I remember the song well.

Guest, is there any way you could upload the audio to YouTube perhaps? Have not heard this song in forty years - it would be a real treat! Or could you at least post the lyrics of the chorus here? Thanks.

Yes, I remember that song from Sesame Street For some reason it's been running through my head tonight. The song thinking of has a chorus of,
    Homemade Aeroplane
Take us here and back again
    Flying cross in silver wings
Close your eyes, and find yourself
In a world of make believe.
Is that the same song you are recalling? I hope that I'm not the only one going crazy trying to remember this very pleasant song.
