Subject: RE: Origins: old My Gal (Rich Gal) recordings From: Mick Pearce (MCP) Date: 21 Mar 13 - 11:36 AM Version of She Gets There Just The Same were around before the recording - see American Negro Folk Songs (pp 316-320 for example - that link takes you to p318). These date from the about 1915 - 1922 (and I think I saw one 1908). Not recordings of course. This is Roud 7052 and has 54 entries. There are some early recordings of the Charming Betsy version eg Fiddlin' John Carson from 1925. Texts appear in a variety of books (including Rugby songs and Erotic/Dirty songs). The Max Hunter collection has a recording of a short version collected in 1961: The Rich Girl. See also the discussion here on Mudcat: Lyr Req: Charming Betsy Mick |
Subject: RE: Origins: old My Gal (Rich Gal) recordings From: PHJim Date: 21 Mar 13 - 10:25 AM Our jug band does this tune and I found a bit of info, but very sketchy. Apparently it was recorded by Dora Carr as "Black Girl Gets There Just The Same" (1925) and on "Cow Cow Davenport" (1924-29) and it included these verses: Well a white lady wears a hobble skirt, A yaller gal tries to do the same, But a poor black gal wears a Mary Jane, But she's hobbling just the same. Well a white lady sleeps in a feather bed, A yaller gal tries to do the same, But a poor black gal makes a pallet on de floor, But she's sleeping just the same. |
Subject: Origins: old My Gal (Rich Gal) recordings From: GUEST,Martunes Date: 21 Mar 13 - 07:27 AM Happy Spring everyone! I have been trying in vain, to find a 'vintage' recording of this song that i first heard done by the kweskin jug band. does an old recording exist? does anyone know where it came from? i've found relatively contemporary versions but nothing from the 78rpm days. Is it, in fact, even an old song or did the kweskin guys create it? Any help would be appreciated so i can move on to obsessing about other stuff ;) |
