Well if we're getting our favourite Python lines out of the way in the "This Parrot's Dead" Thread, why not exorcise our Francis Vincent Zappa lines here. I mean why not? I figure the odds be 50-50, we might just have something to say.

I know Frank was in know way folk, had obviously played some blues but I wouldn't consider him a bluesman, so this thread is pure BS here. I sure found him to be a great writer, wit and musician. I loved him at the Washington Censorship hearings.

This one has more relevance today than when I first heard it in '72, especially when you consider who might have also heard it (but then, he didn't inhale...)

Cover that girl with chocolate syrup,
Bring her on again...
I'd like to cover that girl with chocolate syrup
Bring her on again.
She's a teenage queen, and she turns me on
I'd like to make her do a nasty on the White House lawn
Won't you cover that girl with chocolate syrup
And boogie 'til the cows come home...

"tv dinner by the pool...I'm so glad I finished school"

Frank was a true mad genius, who combined biting satire with an incredible musical sensibility. The Mothers were the best, and strangest, collection of jazz/rock/blues musicians to ever come together under one demented banner. Zappa was also one of the finest and most under-rated guitar players in the business. He was obscene, funny, and intelligent simultaneously. With his frizzy hair, lip-beard, and brooding eyes he looked like a side-show escapee. As a composer, he was probably rock's foremost. as witness Peaches en Regalia or Ceremonial March of the Pumpkins(Frank was obsessed with fruits and vegetables). I miss him.

"She ruled the toads of the Short Forest
And every newt in Idaho
And every cricket who had chorus
Beside the Bush and Buffalo"

There was an inspired line, (I think it was in Mudshark) which said something like "but first let me wipe the rancid beer off my beard, baby." But I have always misquoted it. Anyone remember it?

"Watch out where the huskies go,
And don't you eat that yellow snow."

Good, sound advice for all of us.

Frank's book was one of the funniest and most intelligent books I've ever read. Leej pretty well summed it up. It should be obvious that I was a BIG Zappa fan. But favorite lines...I wouldn't know where to start. So many of them have entered my vernacular, including the title of this thread, that its difficult to grab the best. All mentioned so far are good and I always like "Hey man, is that a real poncho or a Sears poncho" for describing so many of the things in our plastic culture. Somethings cool...that's "Dinah-Mo Hum" along with other usages. I hardly ever ask someone to pass the butter..."Hey, let me steal the Margereen." Its kinda' endless.........

Also worthy of note were the album names and the covers. The favorite for me here is "Weasels Ripped My Flesh" with the cartoon 50's dude shaving with the electric weasel; smiling away while the weasel gouges his cheek...just fantastic, vintage Zappa.

Musically and technically he was up in the rare air and I'll never forget his comment that "Kids wouldn't know good music if it came up and bit them in the ass....So just play it loud."

......great loss...I miss him...

Jazz is not dead...it just smells funny.

I have a message to deliver to the cute people of the world...if you're cute, or maybe you're beautiful...there's MORE OF US UGLY MOTHERFUCKERS OUT THERE THAN YOU ARE!! So watch out.

'Spaw, I always thought that 'Great Googly Moogly' was a Zappa original, I recently got a Sonny Boy Williamson Cd and there it was in one of his songs. I know what you mean about making his sayings part of your own vocabulary, Poncho, Montana, etc. But having been in sales and listened to BS my entire life, none have stuck like "hey there Brother, who you jivin' with that Cosmic Debris"

I believe that Frank was a musical genius and a vastly underrated guitarist.

Didn't know that Steve.......and yeah, "Cosmic Debris" is right up there. Also everytime someone uses the cutesy "Shake your bootie," my mind translates to "Sheik Yerbouti."...

I empathize with these Zappa enthusiasts -- such a great loss, so very much talent and disdain for social trivia. The line from Mudshark refers specifically to "rancid Budweiser," perhaps a redundancy. Although Frank too often got caught up in his own shock-seeking, and his homophobic attacks were shameful and beneath him, he was a fountain of one-liners. Among my favorites: "hair growing out every home in me..." [from "Concentration Moon"] "where the PA system eats it/and the band plays some of the most terriblest shit you ever known" [from "Road Ladies"] "Electric Aunt Jemima, Goddess of Love/khaki maple buckwheats cooking on the stove" ["Electric Aunt Jemima"] "Ever take a moment just to show some real emotion/in between the moisture cream and velvet facial lotion" [from "Mom and Dad"] and the winner: "take the time to look around/watch the Nazis run your town/then go home and check yourself/you think we're talking 'bout someone else" [from "Plastic People"] It has been a heavy burden adopting this genius as a role model.
