One song that has become topical in Turkey in recent years is the "Yemen Turkusu", aka "Burasi Mustur". It was written during WW1, abut a village in eastern Anatolia that lost most of young men fighting the British in Yemen. It's become a comment on any of the wars in the region - Turkey's own civil war in Kurdistan in particular. Here it is applied to Gaza, sung by the crew of the "Mavi Marmara":

You will find many versions of that on the web. Look for the recording date to see which war the singer had in mind.

Probably the way to look for such recent music is to search for charts or other clues to recent origin. Amazon listinsg are one option. I figured there had to be a Turkish song about the Israeli pirates attacking the Mavi Marmara, and found one immediately:

Sinan Sami

It isn't all that good but it's certainly topical. Russia will have had plenty of recent events that could make for songs.

Try Alp Bora (Trio/Quartet). Songs from Anatolia. Two CDs "Amber" and "Bab". Great Voice, guitar, fiddl, cello, percussion. You will find him at www.alpbora.net. Or the Group "SAFRAN" with their CD Sevinc & hüzün.

Can't help you with releases quite that recent. There are though mountains of stuff from the first four countries. Less so from Croatia.

Rather than compile a list of personal favourites, most of which are probably deleted by now, try searching for the music of these countries on Amazon.

Also, take a look at World Jukebox which allows you to download vintage and impossibly rare recordings of ethnic music from all over the world.

Ukrainian klezmer: Konsonans Retro (nothing quite that recent)

Croatia's entry for Eurovision 2013: Klapa s Mora (yuck)

Hello

I'm looking for musical recommendations from any genre from Greece, Turkey, Russia, Ukraine and/or Croatia.

I'm especially looking for music released in the last year or so as it's for a paticular project.

All recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks

A.W
