Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell were interviewed by Terri Gross on todays Fresh Air program. I didn't get to listen to the entire interview, but what I heard of it was very interesting. I was almost moved to tears by Emmylou's tale of her 1960s letter to Pete Seeger, and Pete's encouraging response. Take a listen:

Just wonderful.    They talk about a whole bunch of fascinating topics, including their lives--and the joys of close harmony duet singing.   It's true there is very little better in life than singing close harmony.    I'd also definitely agree with the genealogy of harmony singing they cite--especially that the Louvin Brothers were so influential (even though the transcriber thought at first it was the Luman Brothers--of course the transcriber also couldn't spell Byrds--transcriber couldn't possibly be a Boomer or he or she would know better.)

And ":Angels Rejoiced" has been one of my favorite songs for ever.   Gary Henderson used to play it here in the DC area on WAMU by Nicolette Larson with a harmony singer (who sounds a lot like Rodney).

I wonder if the DC club they're talking about is actually the Red Fox in Bethesda.   I think I saw Emmylou there when the Seldom Scene was performing.   (Or maybe I'm just dreaming that).

it's great that Emmylou seems to be returning to her country roots.    The more country she is the better I like her.    Her 1980 album " Roses in the Snow" (Carter Family songs) will live forever.   As will the Red Clay Ramblers album of Carter songs.

I also loved Rodney's story of writing a sad song when he was really happy.   Among other things, singing sad songs can make you feel really good--and happy songs can often seem saccharine.

And Emmylou's story about how she didn't know if she had the right to sing folk and country since she hadn't suffered enough.

Thanks so much for this thread, Joe.

Actually, to set the record straight, I just listened to Nicolette Larson's version of "Angels Rejoiced" and I was wrong--- she is in fact the harmony singer ( doubled partly, it appears). The male singer has the melody.

But, as I said, it is a simply uplifting, wonderful version of the song.

Happy Easter to all.
