Subject: RE: Obit: Phil Ramone, famed producer (1934-2013) From: Phil Cooper Date: 01 Apr 13 - 07:43 AM I believe Phil Ramone also was involved producing Tom Paxton Six for Elektra way back. I'll have to look at my copy in the basement, but I'm sure his name is on it. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Phil Ramone, famed producer (1934-2013) From: pdq Date: 31 Mar 13 - 02:00 PM To clarify, the album called The Band (with "Cripple Creek" et al) credits Tony May and Joe Zagarino as engineers. For their record "Rock of Ages" (live recording), Mark Harman and Phil Ramone are credited. John Simon would resent the incorrect credit as he was producer and functionally a member of The Band in its early days. Phil Ramone knew Pop Music and that is what most of his output was. |

Subject: RE: Obit: Phil Ramone, famed producer (1934-2013) From: pdq Date: 31 Mar 13 - 01:31 PM As far as contributions to The Band, I can only find a shared credit (with Mark Harman) as one of the engineers for the live record "Rock of Ages", recorded in the last week of 1971, leading up to a famous New Years Eve concert with Bob Dylan as guest. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Phil Ramone, famed producer (1934-2013) From: Will Fly Date: 31 Mar 13 - 07:55 AM I wonder what Ramone's connection with "The Band" was - it was certainly produced and played on by John Simon. Was PR the engineer? |

Subject: Obit: Phil Ramone, famed producer From: michaelr Date: 30 Mar 13 - 08:35 PM From here: "NEW YORK (AP) — Phil Ramone, the masterful Grammy Award-winning engineer, arranger and producer whose platinum touch included recordings with Ray Charles, Billy Joel and Paul Simon, died Saturday of complications stemming from heart surgery, his family said. He was 79. Ramone, who lived in Wilton, Conn., had elective surgery on Feb. 27 to prevent an aortic aneurysm, son Matt Ramone said. He later developed pneumonia and died Saturday morning at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, the son said. Few in the recording industry enjoyed a more spectacular and diverse career. Phil Ramone won 14 competitive Grammy Awards and one for lifetime achievement. Worldwide sales for his projects topped 100 million. He was at ease with rock, jazz, swing and pop, working with Frank Sinatra and Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder and Paul McCartney, Elton John and Tony Bennett, Madonna and Lou Reed. One of the biggest names not to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Ramone was on hand for such classic albums as The Band's "The Band" and Bob Dylan's "Blood On the Tracks." He produced three records that went on to win Grammys for album of the year — Paul Simon's "Still Crazy After All These Years," Billy Joel's "52nd Street" and Ray Charles' "Genius Loves Company."" I do not believe he ever worked with the Ramones. |
