Matter of fact, he's gotten away with stuff (like the NDAA) that Bush could only have dreamed of...simply because he's not a Republican, so the many people who voted for him won't subject him to the scrutiny and criticism that they would have subjected a Republican to. This is how those 2 parties control America and achieve a common purpose. They are immune to attack from most of their own supporters due to their supporters' fear of "the other party" getting into office, and that just keeps the old imperial game rolling along forever....because it's only necessary to fool half of the people all of the time to make the imperial game workable. Reagan/Bush/Clinton/Bush/Obama have all been servants of the same world-devouring and corrupt imperial order. |

This leads to a certain number of armed conflicts in various places, and those conflicts are mostly tied to controlling strategic resources and trade routes. It hasn't made any real difference replacing Bush with Obama. The imperial policy rolls on...and just as the Nazis or the Italian Fascists or the Japanese militarists were in the 30s and 40s, this American policy is the enemy of the whole rest of the world (with the exception of Israel and the UK, who are partners in it). That's why the USA is hated and feared by most nations on the face of the Earth today. Now, remember....I was absolutely DELIGHTED when Obama won in 2008! I've still got the paper saved here from the day after he won (Toronto Star. Nov 5/08. Headline reads "A Dream Fulfilled" "Obama Overcomes"). Virtually all Canadians were delighted he'd won. I've never seen people happier here with an American election result. Because he looked like a progressive who would change things after 8 terrible years of Bush and Cheney. He has not turned out to be anything of the sort. He is right of center in his policies, his advisors are Wall Street insiders, and he's continuing in George Bush's footsteps. |

The consequences of Obama's proposals are not hard to predict: millions more people, particularly the elderly, will be thrown into poverty or be cut off from life-preserving medical care. About 70 percent of seniors depend on the already meager benefits for at least half of their income, with 40 percent depending on it to keep them above the poverty line. The administration's proposal, with a raft of other cuts in key social programs, is only the starting point for negotiations with Congressional Republicans, a process that will drive the whole discussion even further to the right. Many of them were taken from his collection of miles and miles of open-reel tapes, many of which were recorded at parties, song fests, and informal hootenannies ("informal hootenannies"—that's redundant!), where we often tried out songs for the first time that we had just learned, and often they hadn't quite "jelled" yet. Some of the ones he has of me were also on open-reel tape, home recordings off the air of the "Ballads and Books" educational television series I did in 1959. The other voice on the records is Buzz Anderson, a broadcasting student at the U. of Washington, acting as "interviewer," and asking me questions we thought the viewers might have asked if they could. Of course the GOP has not done better by insisting on deeper cuts to public programs. The enactment of the NDAA is a serious breach of democracy. The Second Amendment has lost it's historical meaning. No British soldiers quartered in America. A well-regulated militia doesn't call themselves the NRA. The other big mistake will be to approve the Keystone XL Pipeline against the criticisms held by climate scientists over the world. There are a few nutty dissenters but they carry no weight and are mostly shills for corporations but that's another thread. The Democratic and Republican Parties have both been corrupted by lobbying money and John Roberts (who should be impeached for claiming corporations are people in the Citizen's United ruling). That's also another thread. The problem is that the system is broken. Money has corrupted it. Obama is not totally to blame here but it has to be shared by Congress, some members of the Senate, the Tea Party, The GOP and Dems. There are no good actors in the halls of government these days which is controlled by corporate interests (a definition of fascism) and the dilution of the effectiveness of government agencies bought out by the revolving door. We need a strong grass roots movement to push Obama into better decisions. That won't come by moaning and groaning, whining and pulling hair out over Obama. It's time to grow up and take action. |

The official line promoted by the Obama administration is that the United States is in the midst of an accelerating economic recovery........... For millions of older workers, the prospect of economic security and a decent retirement is growing ever more distant as the elderly are forced to dip into their savings and take on ever greater debt just to survive. The debt of Americans aged 65 to 74 is rising faster than that of any other age group, according to Federal Reserve figures. For a typical household led by someone 65 or older, household debt grew by more than 50 percent between 2000 and 2011. The already insufficient benefits provided by Social Security and Medicare, the federal retirement and health care programs, are being scaled back. Fewer and fewer retirees have a guaranteed pension. Among those that do, many have resorted to borrowing against their pensions and paying usurious interest rates to unscrupulous lenders. Last week, the New York Times reported that companies that offer pension advances often charge interest rates, after factoring in fees, of between 27 and 106 percent. Older households spent 7.1 percent of their incomes to pay off debt in 2010, up from 4.5 percent three years earlier, according to figures from the Employee Benefit Research Institute. Earlier this month, Wells Fargo reported that the number of older workers borrowing from their 401(k) retirement accounts—and paying penalties to do so—surged 28 percent at the end of 2012 compared to the same period in 2011. Conditions are no better at the other end of the age spectrum. Almost 16 million children in the US, or 22 percent, live in families whose income is below the federal poverty line, according to the National Center for Children in Poverty. Last month, the United Nation's Children's Fund released a report showing that, among developed countries, the United States ranks 26 out of 29, behind Greece and just above Lithuania, Latvia and Romania, in terms of the percentage of children living in poverty............ Nor is poverty confined to the unemployed. According to a report issued last month by the US Census Bureau, the percentage of the population who are "working poor" rose dramatically, from 5.1 percent in 2006 to 7 percent in 2011. One quarter all those in poverty—about 10.4 million people—are working. The bulk of new jobs are in low-paid service industries, and even manufacturing workers increasingly make as little as $10 an hour—a poverty wage for a family of four. The effects of poverty are myriad. According to one recent study, 80 million adults in the US, about 43 percent of the total population, did not get medical care sometime in 2012 because they could not afford it. This is up a shocking 17 million since 2003. Growing poverty and social distress are treated essentially as non-issues by the mass media. According to a recent study by the Pew Research center, the US media focused just one fifth of one percent of its news coverage on the topic of poverty. "In no year did poverty coverage even come close to accounting for as little as one percent of the news hole," Mark Jurkowitz, the project's associate director, told Harvard's Nieman Foundation. In an earlier period, such indices of social distress would have been treated as a national disgrace. The same month the IRS audited her business tax returns. In May 2011 the FBI called again for a general inquiry about King Street Patriots. In June 2011 Engelbrecht's personal tax returns were audited and the FBI called again. In October 2011 a round of questions on True the Vote. In November 2011 another call from the FBI. The next month, more questions from the FBI. In February 2012 a third round of IRS questions on True the Vote. In February 2012 a first round of questions on King Street Patriots. The same month the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms did an unscheduled audit of her business. (It had a license to make firearms but didn't make them.) In July 2012 the Occupational Safety and Health Administration did an unscheduled audit. In November 2012 more IRS questions on True the Vote. In March 2013, more questions. In April 2013 a second ATF audit. All this because she requested tax-exempt status for a local conservative group and for one that registers voters and tries to get dead people off the rolls. According to officials at Rutherford, the civil rights action names as defendants members of law enforcement and the government who were involved in last year's episode where Marine veteran Brandon Raub, 27, was arrested by a swarm of FBI and Secret Service and forcibly detained in a psychiatric ward for a week. His crime was posting controversial song lyrics and political views on Facebook, the institute reported. In one of his postings, he cited the evil in the world. "The United States was meant to lead the charge against injustice, but through our example not our force. People do not respond to having liberty and freedom forced on them," he wrote. He was released later when a judge stepped in and concluded the prosecution's case against Raub was "so devoid of any factual allegations that it could not be reasonably expected to give rise to a case or controversy." The lawsuit asks for damages for Raub for the attack he endured. It was filed in U.S. District Court in Richmond, Va., and claims Raub's seizure and detention were part of a plan executed by the Obama administration called "Operation Vigilant Eagle." That, the institute explains, was a federal program to do surveillance on military veterans who express views critical of the government. Institute attorneys claim the attempt to label Raub as "mentally ill" and authorities' efforts to involuntarily commit him into custody was intended to silence his criticism of the government. However, they explain the strategy also violated Raub's First and Fourth Amendment rights. "Since coming to Raub's defense, The Rutherford Institute has been contacted by military veterans across the country recounting similar incidents. Hopefully, by holding officials accountable, we can ensure that Brandon is the last to suffer in this way." It was last Aug, 16 when Chesterfield police, Secret Service and FBI agents arrived at Raub's home and asked to talk with him about his Facebook posts. "Like many Facebook users, Raub, a Marine who has served tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, uses his Facebook page to post song lyrics and air his political opinions. Without providing any explanation, levying any charges against Raub or reading him his rights, law enforcement officials handcuffed Raub and transported him to police headquarters, then to John Randolph Medical Center, where he was held against his will," the Institute reported. "In a hearing on Aug. 20, government officials pointed to Raub's Facebook posts as the reason for his incarceration. While Raub stated that the Facebook posts were being read out of context, a Special Justice ordered Raub be held up to 30 more days for psychological evaluation and treatment." When Circuit Court Judge Allan Sharrett, however, found out about the case, he ordered it dismissed and Raub released, because there was no evidence of a case. In asking the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia to acknowledge the harm done to Raub and to rectify the violation of his First, Fourth, Fifth and 14th Amendment rights, Institute attorneys are requesting that Raub be awarded damages. The 14-page complaint describes Raub's "baseless incarceration" and said it violated his free speech, due process and other rights. The complaint claims the arrest was a "pretext" that was orchestrated to "silence Raub's speech critical of the government by subjecting him to involuntary commitment." The best example of an informant network in the communist world, of course, was in East Germany where the Ministry of State Security (or Stasi) controlled one informant for every 60 citizens. These informants were told that they were their country's first line of defense against threats to national security. The informant network of the Obama administration is similarly insidious, with federal employees required to keep close tabs on co-workers, and managers facing penalties, including criminal charges, for failing to report their suspicions. According to Marisa Taylor and Jonathan Landay, reporting in McClatchyDC.com on June 20, there are government documents that equate leaks with espionage. A Defense Department paper issued in 2012 exhorts its employees to "hammer this fact home…leaking is tantamount to aiding the enemies of the United States." The Obama administration's initiative is called the Insider Threat Program and it is not restricted to the national security bureaucracy. The Department of Education has informed its employees that co-workers going through "certain life experiences," such as divorce or "frustrations with co-workers," could turn a trusted employee into "an insider threat."
