Subject: RE: Upton FF: Who's going? From: GUEST,JohnB Date: 10 Apr 13 - 12:34 AM I will be there with our Morris Team, all the way from Canadia, Orange Peel Morris and would really appreciate any info regarding sessions, pubs etc. Thanks, JohnB. |
Subject: RE: Upton FF: Who's going? From: Mr Happy Date: 10 Apr 13 - 03:39 AM Ahem, yes Welland, 'cos the sports ground frequently gets very soggy! |
Subject: RE: Upton FF: Who's going? From: Mr Happy Date: 10 Apr 13 - 05:18 AM Where's 'Canadia'? |
Subject: RE: Upton FF: Who's going? From: SteveMansfield Date: 10 Apr 13 - 05:40 AM Sessions - make your own. Most of the pubs and bars along the small cobbled riverside area which all the Morris sides are confined to for the whole three days are amenable, and the organised festival sessions get very full and tend to the lowest-common-denominator. I hope you enjoy your experience of being with a Morris side at Upton considerably more than I did - suffice to say I won't ever be going again ... |
Subject: RE: Upton FF: Who's going? From: GUEST,Square The Circle Date: 10 Apr 13 - 06:48 AM Newport Folk Club Mobile Unit will be there, best part of thirty of us this year, running the folk club on Sunday. Always a good session in the Muggery and the one of the pubs on the riverbank and a good singaround in the White Lion as well as loads of other places. |
Subject: RE: Upton FF: Who's going? From: GUEST,Seayaker Date: 10 Apr 13 - 07:01 AM Canadia must be the incorrect spelland Mr. H. ;-) Don't be put off Guest JohnB. The Morris folk I know have a great time and go back year after year. There was a good tune session in the pub where Waterside meets Dunn Lane when I was last there a couple of years ago, but if you get a session going in a pub people will drop in. |
Subject: RE: Upton FF: Who's going? From: Mr Happy Date: 10 Apr 13 - 07:04 AM 'festival sessions get very full and tend to the lowest-common-denominator' Agreed & following -ve experiences of this kind in previous years there, didn't wish to go there again - however had to bow to majority decision for friends' personal reasons. However will attempt to seek out other venues to play, if not play with chums on campsite |
Subject: RE: Upton FF: Who's going? From: bubblyrat Date: 10 Apr 13 - 10:56 AM Now living in Tewkesbury , so it would be hard ,if not positively churlish ,not to go this year !I may well be banging my drum (literally) for Happenstance Border Morris ,but will be seeking out "sessions" as well for instrumental pleasure. We might (fingers crossed) even have a narrowboat by then ! |
Subject: RE: Upton FF: Who's going? From: GUEST,JohnB Date: 13 Apr 13 - 12:41 AM It's somewhere near Canada MrH. I do hope it is better than never going again though after a 3,000 mile bus trip (Airbus of course) JohnB (who isn't really a guest I just keep losing my Cookie) |
Subject: RE: Upton FF: Who's going? From: GUEST,Rich A Date: 13 Apr 13 - 08:03 AM What you need is a sloop John B... I have a plan for you Candians. |
Subject: RE: Upton FF: Who's going? From: GUEST,JohnB Date: 16 Apr 13 - 12:49 AM Oh Good, I think. JohnB |
Subject: RE: Upton FF: Who's going? From: Trevor Date: 16 Apr 13 - 04:29 AM At least some of Rapsquillion are hoping to be there for a sing on Saturday |
Subject: RE: Upton FF: Who's going? From: Mr Happy Date: 16 Apr 13 - 05:02 AM As we hope to stay over 'til the Tuesday after the bank hol, then perhaps get a 'survivors' sesh on the Mon afternoon & evening |
Subject: RE: Upton FF: Who's going? From: Mr Red Date: 16 Apr 13 - 05:48 AM Well I find the Swan foyer a decent session. The Muggery is always a mixed affair. The Anchor is for those trying to get away from the crush. I would expect spontaneous happenings in the Lion &/or downstairs in the White Star. The problem with Folk is that it is and should be eclectic. If you have special preferrences then you have to run your own session. This is no different from other festivals I go to. And hear similar negative comments about this and that session. All conflicting musically. And anyway the real problem is that the young folkies are either thin on the ground &/or way too talented which makes it difficult to be a proper old fogie these days. IMNSHO |
Subject: RE: Upton FF: Who's going? From: Les from Hull Date: 26 Apr 13 - 08:44 AM Maggie and I are booked to run the evening sessions in the Muggery, and we welcome a mixed session; songs, tunes, spoken word, anything goes. So we hope to welcome friends old and new for our very first Upton. |
Subject: RE: Upton FF: Who's going? From: Mr Happy Date: 26 Apr 13 - 09:58 AM In relation to sessions, is the age of attendees significant? |
Subject: RE: Upton FF: Who's going? From: Les from Hull Date: 26 Apr 13 - 01:35 PM We're not ageist as long as you all behave yourselves! |
Subject: RE: Upton FF: Who's going? From: Mrs Scarecrow Date: 26 Apr 13 - 03:19 PM Mr Scarecrow and I will be there as usual. We have a 30min concert spot in the Star on friday . We are helping to run the song session with Johnny Morris and John Hare on Saturday Night at the White Lion, and as usual the Songwriting forum with Andrew Mckay and Carole Etherington on the Sunday. We always have a lovely time at Upton and are looking forward to it again |

Subject: RE: Upton FF: Who's going? From: GUEST,Sue the Borderer currently cookieless Date: 26 Apr 13 - 04:17 PM Hi JOHN B I'm certainly looking forward to dancing with you again, JohnB. We - Exmoor Border Morris - had a great time dancing with OrangePeel for a while at Chepstow (Two Rivers Festival)a few years ago. And I remember how much I enjoyed your singing. P'raps EBM & OP could join together for a few dances. As you (hopefully) know, most of the time you pick your own spot and who to dance with. AND HI EVERYONE If you fancy dancing or playing for some Border Morris, Wild Thyme will be morrissing Under the Bridge, probably starting round about 5.30pm, for an hour or so, on Sat and Sunday Everyone is welcome to come and join in. Sticks and jackets provided. AND SINGERS, MUSICIANS and WALKERS - On the Monday there's a 'Musical Meander'. The walk is led by Ann & Mike from Foxs Morris and I'm organising the 'musical' side. I get given a list of possible topics (which this year range from the somewhat limited topic of 'greenhouses'(!), to ruined castles and 'almost anything about the countryside or heritage' - so there's plenty of scope for you to find something if you want to input a song. Portable instruments could come in useful too - but, be warned, the walk is about 4 miles, so don't bring the big accordion!! We're setting off at 11.30am on Monday from the field outside the Sports Pavilion, opposite the Church. P.S. Like Mrs Scarecrow (above) I always have a great time. |
Subject: RE: Upton FF: Who's going? From: GUEST,AEOLA Date: 28 Apr 13 - 07:05 AM we'll be there as usual!! Hope it's a bit drier this year!! I think there are song sessions in the Plough! |
Subject: RE: Upton FF: Who's going? From: Splott Man Date: 29 Apr 13 - 03:57 AM We'll be up for the walk on Monday. We usually miss out due to other commitments. FRIDAY NIGHT If you feel like a dance, the Dame & I, and the wonderful musician, Martin Hughes, will be hosting the scratch ceilidh in the Rugby Club on Friday night. We'll be leading some old favourites, and road testing some new dances. You can treat this was an open mike for callers, and have a go yourself. Splott Man |

Subject: RE: Upton FF: Who's going? From: bubblyrat Date: 30 Apr 13 - 05:07 AM Had a bit of drama here this morning ; the passenger vessel from Upton tried to make a passage up the Avon to Tewkesbury Mill last night ,but ran aground on a mudbank . I watched this morning from our house,as she spent half an hour slowly going astern back to the Severn ! Let us hope there is /was no damage to affect the Upton FF river trips , which I am looking forward to ! |
Subject: RE: Upton FF: Who's going? From: Mr Happy Date: 02 May 13 - 12:04 PM We weren't able to get pitches at our usual campsite, so pastures new at Eastnor Castle near Ledbury. Anyone know it/ camped there? |
Subject: RE: Upton FF: Who's going? From: Mr Happy Date: 02 May 13 - 12:12 PM There's one thing I found about this site, they don't have any toilets, so I'll have to make sure I go before leaving home! |
