Subject: RE: fake thackray From: Rob Naylor Date: 16 Apr 13 - 09:53 PM Breezy: Just loved what Jake Thackray (spelling correct this time!) did with Georges Brassens' "Le Gorille" when he translated it (the sentiment, if not exactly a literal translation!) into "Brother Gorilla". |

Subject: RE: fake thackray From: MGM·Lion Date: 17 Apr 13 - 04:30 AM When a name appears on here that one doesn't know, as michaelr claims never to have heard of Jake Thackray, why not just, first off, google the name, check wikipedia etc, before claiming ignorance with an odd sort of almost proud tone, or asking helplessly for a link to be provided? Here for a start is a link to wikipedia on Thackray ~~ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jake_Thackray ~M~ |
Subject: RE: fake thackray From: LesB Date: 17 Apr 13 - 04:35 AM For clarification (& michaelr) Jake Thackery and Fake Thackray Cheers Les |
Subject: RE: fake thackray From: GUEST Date: 17 Apr 13 - 04:38 AM Having watched both of them perform live, I have to say that Fake is one up on Jake - he smiles more! |

Subject: RE: fake thackray From: GUEST Date: 17 Apr 13 - 05:52 AM What has smiling got to do with it? he was a nervous performer J T's comments on how us post war brits were brainwashed by pop american 'musical' culture which has had in some ways a cancerous effect on creative British culture Thankfully there was a Woody Guthrie as american's saving grace rather like soaps contribution to dramatic art still guesting Before entering inane comments maybe take time to watch the tribute prog |
Subject: RE: fake thackray From: GUEST Date: 17 Apr 13 - 06:02 AM That was a cock up, a cock-up To settle my own trembling bowels |
Subject: RE: fake thackray From: Charmion Date: 17 Apr 13 - 08:09 AM Jake may not have crossed the Pond in person, but his music certainly did. Back about 1983, I first heard "Isabel Makes Love On National Monuments" on CBC Radio, on a show hosted by Max Ferguson (may he rest in peace). Max also frequently programmed "My Dog Ulysees" and "Lah Di Dah", but it was "Isabel" that left me helpless over the sink while doing the dishes -- I couldn't believe my ears. Despite its almost complete conversion to Toronto-style hipsterism, CBC still occasionally surprises me with a wee dose of Jake. There is hope. |

Subject: RE: fake thackray From: Elmore Date: 17 Apr 13 - 09:03 AM ontario? What's that? |
Subject: RE: fake thackray From: michaelr Date: 17 Apr 13 - 07:28 PM Thanks for the links. Funny stuff! When I post here, I generally try to make clear what I'm talking about. Breezy's posts appear to do the opposite, and I find that annoying. Why should I have to enlist Google to understand what he's saying, when he could just as well write plain English? |
Subject: RE: fake thackray From: Capo da Monty Date: 18 Apr 13 - 05:41 AM Respect to all J T tribute performers! The best I have seen was at The New Xpress Folk Club in Bournemouth Ed Mortimer... CdM |
Subject: RE: fake thackray From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 18 Apr 13 - 02:07 PM Crptic crossword clue posts might make sense in twitter, where space is short. But on Mudcat its more common, and politer, to use sentences that provide enough information to allow people to understand what we are on about. It doesn't take significantly longer to write, and it can a lot of time when reading. |
