Subject: Lyr Req: We're going to a vedding
From: GUEST,Roger L
Date: 17 Apr 13 - 05:06 PM

Hi everyone, does anybody know the lyrics and chords to this song? I have some:

I'm going to a vedding, a really lovely vedding
The vedding we are going to is fine, fine, fine
We're going in a taxi, with good old Uncle Maxi
The vedding we are going to is mine, mine, mine

It could be an 40s-50s song probably performed by Billy Cotton but I'n not sure.

Many thanks,

Roger L.

Is it like Vinter in the valley green, where the vind blew gainst the vindowpanes?

Thank you Mrr sans cookie. Sounds like the same writer doesn't it? I don't think it's the same song though.

You can listen to a recording on this page at soundcloud.com. Information is scant. Is Zetz the name of a band? Is Marty Kerker a performer, or just the guy who uploaded it?

I'm reluctant to try to transcribe it because it seems to contain some Yiddish terms I'm unfamiliar with; anyway, I don't have time right now. I may tackle it later if nobody else does.

Hi Jim, many thanks for your post. At last I can hear the whole song. My friend's non-Jewish parents used to sing this song as it was popular in its time. All he remembered were the lyrics I posted up. He and I will be pleased. As you say working out the rest of the lyrics will be tricky as neither of us knows any Yiddish. At least the chords seem easy. Thanks again. All the best, Roger L.

OK, here's my attempt at a transcription. I have put all the Yiddish words in italics. At least I'm pretty sure these are all real Yiddish words; I am less certain that I've found the right ones! There are still a couple more that I didn't dare even guess at, indicated by ellipses. Of course corrections are sincerely hoped for.

GOING TO A VEDDING
As sung by Zetz(?)/Marty Kerker(?)

I'm going to a wedding,
A lovely, lovely wedding.
Everything to me is looking fine.
I'm going there with Maxie.
We're taking us a taxi.
We've got to be there at the stroke of nine.
We've got a wedding simcha.
Get money from the pushke.
What's matter that we have to leave our beds?
Meshugge celebration,
We'll wear our white carnations
Whenever someone hurries up and weds.
Silverstein, Rubinstein, Hammerstein and Polyakov,
Goldenstein, Finkelstein, they'll all be shouting, "mazel tov!"
The bride and groom they barely met.
She has a face you could forget.
Such a … she is twenty-four.
Now I hear she likes to kvetch,
And the groom he ain't a catch.
Most of all, she says he's very poor.
The rabbi he will lead the prayers,
Then we'll lift them up in chairs.
Who is getting shickered? I know I am.
Everyone will dance and sing
When the bride shows off her ring,
Raise a glass and shout, "… l'chai'im!"
Bagels, lox, gefilte fish,
Any dish that you can wish,
Hymie goes and gets it for us wholesale.
*
Silverstein, Rubinstein, Hammerstein and Polyakov,
Goldenstein, Finkelstein, they'll all be shouting, "mazel tov!"
Going to a wedding,
A lovely, lovely wedding.
Everything to me is looking fine.
I'm going there with Maxie.
We're taking us a taxi.
We've got to be there at the stroke of nine.
And then we'll have a party. (Oi!)
Talk about a party,
With mama busy pulling(?) at the vine.
I'm going to a wedding,
A lovely lovely wedding
And the wedding that I'm going to is mine.
The wedding that I'm going to is mine.
Hey!

[I'd still like to know the origin of this song. I have a hunch the tune is traditional, but I can't identify it.]

To clarify the location of the word shonde (shame):

Such a shonde she is twenty-four

Great transcription, Jim! The Yiddish words all seem right.

There's still a missing word or two just before l'chai'im.

Sorry Jim - I hadn't noticed. It's out loud:

Raise a glass and shout out loud, "l'chai'im!"

Latecomer to this thread but how wonderful to see the words of this song that I heard a very long time ago. Not quite in my dotage, I’m trying to find the words to ‘Why don’t they give a Yiddisher boy a chance.” It’s a lament about the Royals always marrying amongst themselves although today a ‘commoner’ is marrying Harry.

Also, my grandfather used to sing what sounded like Toni Godl (short O in Toni) totally failing to find the music and lyrics to that and also “Moishe Cohen went to the races, lost his gatkes and his braces”. Any help/advice would be much appreciated.

David
