Re "spread misere"

Thanks for the help on this but I'm not much of a card player so can you help with the pronunciation? I'm okay with "spread" but does it sound like "misair" or more like "misery"? It looks like it might be French...is there an accent on the last "e"?

I have never heard the term "spread misere" but would imagine it to be synonymous with "misere ouvert" as in Solo Whist and other card games.

A call of "Misere" means you bid to take no tricks, and "misere ouvert" means you will do it with all your cards on the table so your opponents can see your hand

For those who are easily offended - please stop at this point - read no further - be advised that the following contains material offensive to a purient-mind or those of a sensitive nature.

Several previous threads on Mr. McGrew - however:

GUEST - EGT (e-git)

Brillant ... THANK YOU! You have a splendid recollection. The lyrics (one would imagine) should have / could have been already in the DT or at least the Rugby-Song-Thread. Your memory of a snippet is enough to locate over 300 other web-pages with the lyrics.

It was late at night
In one of the Yukon halls
And the boy that was handling the music box
Was lazily scratching his balls.

The Cisco Kid had his hand on the tits
Of the lady that's known as Lou,
While there on the floor, on top of a whore,
Lay dangerous Dan McGrew.

Then out of the night that was black as a bitch
And into the din and the smoke,
Strode a rusty old prick with a crick in his dick
And a rusty old load in his poke.

His pants were spotted and cover with spit
That looked like the white of an egg.
His balls hung low and swung to and fro
Whenever he moved his leg.

In his rugged old clothes he stood head to hose
Any bitch who wandered his way,
He beat on his meat, a most talented feat,
And shouted he wanted to play.

His face was as red as a baboon's ass,
And the passion within it burned.
He pulled out his dong; it was thick and was long,
And everyone's asshole squirmed.

He shouldered his way through the flea-bitten crowd,
His hand clutched the crotch of his pants,
And he looked like a man with a dose of the clap
In the last stage of St. Vitus' dance.

Then the lights went out and I dropped to the floor
As the stranger sprang in the dark.
There were sighs and moans and farts and groans
As his donicker found its mark.

The wind it blew and the shit it flew
And I looked 'about the darkened room,
And there on the floor, on top of the whore
Two forms were stacked in the gloom.

The lights came on and the stranger arose,
His cock hung limber and blue,
And there on the floor, on top of the whore,
Lay corn-holed Dan McGrew.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

Dan says:"I think I'll make it a spread misere" Anybody know what that means? I've looked at several versions of the poem but can't find an explanation.

I'm searching, and hoping some other Canadians might be able to help. Will Penney, former band member of A Fine Crowd, was saying that when he was a young fellow in junior high or high school, he did a project for his teacher on Dangerous Dan. The object was to come up with the reason for the shooting.

Being the person Will is, he came up with his project in verse form. Keeping to the same general scheme of the original, he explained why Dangerous Dan got himself shot.

It so impressed the teacher that the piece got put into some Canadian Reader.

What I'm trying to get now is the explanation as printed in this Reader.

I'm so far out of the school system loop, I'm hoping that someone knows of this, and can post it, or send it to me somehow.

You've really aroused our curiousity! BTW, Welcome to the Mudcat. If you have nay trouble figuring things out or have any questions at all, please don't hesitate to ask. Joe, the words for the song are quite different than the actual poem, although many of the phrases are similar or the same. And, of course, the song is much shorter. I don't know about any other Service poems put to music, and I don't have a recording of this one. I hope to do a recording of Dangerous Dan once I nail down the lyrics.

WOW! Didn't expect this scale reaction to my innocent request for Dangerous Dan McGrew son lyrics. This was my first post here and I'm amazed at the wit and creativity. I don't have the melody in MIDI yet, only in my head. I was hoping to have the whole damn song in four part harmony recorded on my Cubase before Christmas. Sang this number a lot 35 years ago and still remember every note of every part. It's just the words!!! The real lyrics as posted here may be qyuite useful in jogging my memory. We'll see. STill can't get over the amazing Dan Guru lyrics. My God this is a fertile list. I'm still trying to figure out how to use to use this list.

Does anyone know the parody written about a local Dublin character who drank the pint of the stranger who came into the bar in Glasnevin, Dublin.

It follows the original fairly closely but changes phrases here and there.

I heard it twice about 30 years ago and the man who said it from memory is long since dead. Just a long shot.
I remember snatches and some of it goes like this; the verse about the eerie music becomes something like:

In a buckskin shirt that was dazed with dirt he sat, and I saw him sway,
Then he clutched the keys with his talon hands-- oh God! but that man can't play.
Were you ever out on the Finglas road and your mind half crazed with beer
And the graveyard wall it seemed to call "you should be lying here"

and the end becomes

I'm not so wise as those lawyer guys, but strictly between us two
The woman that kissed him and -- drank his beer -- was the lady who's known as Lou.

The late David Parry, of Ottowa, set some of Service's lyrics to music. The Canadian group Finest Kind does a rendition of "To Drink" (I think that's the title) on one of their CDs. Dave's recording "The Wind That Tramps The World" has him reciting "The Ballad of * Bill McKie" which is a terrific piece. I think Dave did another recording of just Service stuff. I'll go look.

I don't know if this is the one my dad used to hear on Alaska Airlines, but I was able to find a CD-ROM, kinda pricey at 49.95us, which has the following:

The Voice of Robert W. Service The era was encapsulated and immortalized by the poet, Robert W. Service. Klondike Gold contains a rare recording of the acknowledged bard of the Yukon reciting his most famous work, "The Cremation of Sam McGee", as well as an equally rare radio interview...

at the Dawson museum site. I will keep looking for a less expensive tape of this; I would LOVE to hear him reading his own poems! kat

Being from Fairbanks AK, I've listened to the aforementioned poems many times, recited in a lyrical mode, but never put formally to music. There are available on tape, for sure, on CD, I'm not so sure. I'll ask my sister, in Fairbanks, to find me a CD, which I would be more than happy to record on tape for anyone who is interested. She's in the lower 48 right now and won't be returning home until just before Thanksgiving. If anyone is interested, please let me know, so I don't ask her to scurry around in the snow/ice ... moonchild

I have to add to this, living in Robert Service country (Whitehorse, Yukon) as I do. I could see any of his poems being put to music. The Spell Of The Yukon just begs to be sung. Dangerous Dan McGrew? Kinda boring, I think. Cremation of Sam McGee. Yeah, I guess. There's always When The Iceworms Nest Again.

There's a Robert Service website at http://www.ude.net/service.html. I don't think it has any music for the above poem but it does have all the words to a huge number of Service poems and some music and lyrics to his songs. After reading his songs I can see why he is better remembered and loved as a poet than as a songsmith.

Joe and John, I just called my dad and asked if he knew of any tunes for these. He is a Service afficianado almsot from birth. Anyway, he said he'd never heard of any AND, that if you'd ever heard Service read them, himself, you wouldn't want to put them to anything after that! Dad worked in the Aleutians, on Amchitka, in the 1960's. He said Service only made one recording, but Alaska Airlines had a tape of it and always played it on the trips going out to and back from the islands. Said, it was a little odd, hearing that cultured British accent, at first, but then it was just perfect and spellbinding. He never tired of hearing it. Now, I will have to go see if I can find a copy of that recording somewhere on the good ole' Net!

From: katlaughing

Well, darn it! Couldn't find my RW Service book that has it, BUT did find the poem on the internet.Gawd! I DO love his poetry! Hope it helps:

The Shooting of Dan McGrew
by Robert W. Service

A bunch of the boys were whooping it up in the Malamute saloon;
The kid that tickles the music-box was hitting a jag-time tune;
Back of the bar, in a solo game, sat Dangerous Dan McGrew,
And watching his luck was his light-o'-love, the lady that's known as Lou.

When out of the night, which was fifty below, and into the din and glare,
There stumbled a miner fresh from the creeks, dog-dirty, and loaded for bear.
He looked like a man with a foot in the grave and scarcely the strength of a louse,
Yet he tilted a poke of dust on the bar, and he called for drinks for the house.

There was none could place the stranger's face, though we searched ourselves for a clue;
But we drank his health, and the last to drink was Dangerous Dan McGrew.
There's men that somehow just grip your eyes, and hold them hard like a spell;
And such was he, and he looked to me like a man who had lived in hell;

With a face most hair, and the dreary stare of a dog whose day is done,
As he watered the green stuff in his glass, and the drops fell one by one.
Then I got to figgering who he was, and wondering what he'd do,
And I turned my head--and there watching him was the lady that's known as Lou.

His eyes went rubbering round the room, and he seemed in a kind of daze,
Till at last that old piano fell in the way of his wandering gaze.
The rag-time kid was having a drink; there was no one else on the stool,
So the stranger stumbles across the room, and flops down there like a fool.

In a buckskin shirt that was dazed with dirt he sat, and I saw him sway,
Then he clutched the keys with his talon hands--my God! but that man could play.
Were you ever out in the Great Alone, when the moon was awful clear,
And the icy mountains hemmed you in with a silence you most could hear;

With only the howl of a timber wolf, and you camped there in the cold,
A half-dead thing in a stark, dead world, clean mad for the muck called gold;
While high overhead, green, yellow, and red, the North Lights swept in bars?--
Then you've a hunch what the music meant . . . hunger and night and the stars.

And hunger not of the belly kind, that's banished with bacon and beans,
But the gnawing hunger of lonely men for a home and all that it means;
For a fireside far from the cares that are, four walls and a roof above;
But oh! so cramful of cosy joy, and crowned with a woman's love--

A woman dearer than all the world, and true as Heaven is true--
(God! how ghastly she looks through her rouge,--the lady that's known as Lou.)
Then on a sudden the music changed, so soft that you scarce could hear;
But you felt that your life had been looted clean of all that it once held dear;

That someone had stolen the woman you loved; that her love was a devil's lie;
That your guts were gone, and the best for you was to crawl away and die.
'Twas the crowning cry of a heart's despair, and it thrilled you through and through-
"I guess I'll make it a spread misere," said Dangerous Dan McGrew.

The music almost dies away . . . then it burst like a pent-up flood;
And it seemed to say, "Repay, repay," and my eyes were blind with blood.
The thought came back of an ancient wrong, and it stung like a frozen lash,
And the lust awoke to kill, to kill . . . then the music stopped with a crash,

And the stranger turned, and his eyes they burned in a most peculiar way;
In a buckskin shirt that was glazed with dirt he sat, and I saw him sway;
Then his lips went in in a kind of grin, and he spoke, and his voice was calm,
And "Boys," says he, "you don't know me, and none of you care a damn;

But I want to state, and my words are straight, and I'll bet my poke they're true,
That one of you is a hound of hell . . . and that one is Dan McGrew."
Then I ducked my head and the lights went out, and two guns blazed in the dark;
And a woman screamed, and the lights went up, and two men lay stiff and stark.

Pitched on his head, and pumped full of lead, was Dangerous Dan McGrew,
While the man from the creeks lay clutched to the breast of the lady that's known as Lou.
These are the simple facts of the case, and I guess I ought to know.
They say that the stranger was crazed with "hooch," and I'm not denying it's so.

I'm not so wise as the lawyer guys, but strictly between us two--
The woman that kissed him and--pinched his poke--was the lady known as Lou.
^^
