Can anyone more savvy oblige? |

Subject: RE: Down in the Fields Where the Buttercups From: GUEST,jim bainbridge Date: 01 May 13 - 08:54 AM This was recorded by Charlie Higgins on 78 in the 1930s. He had a whole range of unusual song titles. It was recorded more recently by Bob Davenport in 1971 (I think) on Bill Leader's Trailer label- on vinyl- ''Bob Davenport & the Marsden Rattlers'' and not re-issued as far as I know. I remember the recording of this as I was one of the Marsden Rattlers band who backed Bob a lot in the North East around that time- it was recorded in the Guildhall on Newcastle's quayside, which was a real living dockside then, rather than the tatty, commercial hen-party destination it is in 2013. |
Subject: RE: Down in the Fields Where the Buttercups From: Mick Pearce (MCP) Date: 01 May 13 - 10:18 AM The Charlie Higgins recording is on youtube: Down In The Fields Where The Buttercups All Grow. From memory, I think Bob Davenport sang pretty much the same words as Stewart posted above. Mick |
Subject: RE: Down in the Fields Where the Buttercups From: Mick Pearce (MCP) Date: 01 May 13 - 10:36 AM The British library seems to have recordings of all three songs. Plenty of Down in the Fields Where The Buttercups All Gros. Then: Ain't It All Right Eh (which I assume is the song you're after) has 2 copies of the score. There is also a recording, but it's not clear if that is the same song or not. Tickling Hands has several recordings at the BL, but no score that I can see. The recordings are mostly under the title Take Your Hand Away Love (Please Take Off Those Tickling Hands, though one is just Please Take... and another is Charming Maid (Tickling Hands). (Levy has a song called Take Your Hands Away, but that seems to be a different song). If you're desperate George, I dare say I could take down the tunes for the other two from the recordings. Mick |
Subject: Lyr Add: DOWN IN THE FIELD WHERE THE BUTTERCUPS... From: Jim Dixon Date: 16 May 13 - 01:23 PM A few missing lines in the above transcription leave an irregular number of lines per verse. I hope this will fix the problem—plus a few other words are different. DOWN IN THE FIELD WHERE THE BUTTERCUPS ALL GROW As sung by Charlie Higgins on "Vintage British Comedy, Vol. 1" 1. Oh, Mary Green loves me and I love her too. We blush when we meet like all true lovers do, Beside the plantation where green meadows run. We spoon in the dark and we have lots of fun, Down in the field where the buttercups all grow. My sweetheart said I was too bashful and slow, But she changed her mind when I let myself go, Down in the field where the buttercups all grow. 2. We walked side by side through the long winding grass. The rhubarb grew sideways to let us both pass. We stood 'neath a tree and the birds up above Were all busy dropping their tokens of love, Down in the field where the buttercups all grow. My girl climbed a gate and said, "Turn your head, Joe," But I'd a stiff neck so we let matters go, Down in the field where the buttercups all grow. 3. My sweetheart and I were behind a haystack. A bumblebee flew down the small of her back. I saw what had happened and in my distress, I pushed my right hand down the back of her dress, Down in the field where the buttercups all grow, My hand down her back when she struck me a blow. I'd no idea that bee was so far below, Down in the field where the buttercups all grow. 4. The songsters were greeting the day newly born, The sheep in the meadow, the cows in the corn, And when sheep and cows have been round there a bit, It's not a nice place for a lady to sit. Down in the field where the buttercups all grow, A cow licking Mary's face tickled her so. She thought it was me and said, "Don't slobber, Joe," Down in the field where the buttercups all grow. 5. A ten-gallon barrel on top of the hill Came flashing towards us; my heart it stood still, But Mary stood bravely unflinching and true. Her legs were so bandy the barrel went through, Down in the field where the buttercups all grow. Our courtship was swift and our honeymoon slow. The bed was so small that we both had to go Down in the field where the buttercups all grow. |
