Subject: Dave Van Ronk & Utah Phillips From: voyager Date: 08 May 13 - 10:02 AM Mudcat - The final Dave Van Ronk concert (captured on Smithsonian CD) - 'And the Tin Pan Bended, and the Story Ended' features a photo (pg 15) of Dave and Utah 'clowning around'. This begs the question whether there was an song-swapping, political organizing, or other collaboration between the two artists. I was at the final concert (Oct 22, 2011) & now must find the CD. voyager |

Subject: RE: Dave Van Ronk & Utah Phillips From: GUEST Date: 09 May 13 - 10:27 AM I was once in a folk festival workshop with Dave and Utah so yes, they have swapped songs on at least that occasion and, I would guess, many more. They were certainly friends, maybe not close friends, but they knew each other and there seemed to be genuine affection between them. As for political organizing, I doubt it. Dave was a Trotskyite and Utah was an IWW anarchist ("an anarchist is anyone who doesn't need a 'cop' to tell them what to do"). |

Subject: RE: Dave Van Ronk & Utah Phillips From: Mark Ross Date: 10 May 13 - 07:51 PM I really can't see Dave as a Stalinist. A Trot, yes, but a Stalinist? Mark Ross |
