While sharing a joke with her nurses , this morning my Old Mum went to join my late Father . She was ready to go after 97 years so we will celebrate her life , NOT mourn her death !

When it comes time to go, that sounds like just about the right way to go. Condolences to you and the family.

Some years back some friends told of how the Grandpa of their family reached into his late eighties hale and hearty, pushed back from Sunday dinner one day, said "that was good", and ceased to be.

There certainly is a lot to celebrate. I counted Mary as a friend and looked forward to visiting her whenever I was in Newark.

She was amazing - her sense of mischief was always there and visits always lasted a lot longer than planned. She was annoyed, one time, that the audio books that were brought in from the travelling library were what were thought to be 'suitable' for her age. She found a lot of them boring and wanted something more exciting. Another time, on a trip into Waitrose, we came across Hemp Oil and she reckoned that would be difficult to smoke! Mary taught me a lot about not judging by age!

Over the time I knew her she lost a lot of her sight and became more housebound but her mind was still sharp and her sense of humour never left her.

I am so glad that she left with a joke on her lips. A fitting end for a wonderful lady.

Selfishly, I will miss her on my visits now but know, because she told me, that she was ready to go.

Terry, I thank you for sharing your mother with me. It has been a joy to send messages and photos of our wee chickens to such a delightful lady. She and your dad made a good job of raising their family, and her children returned the favor by taking good care of her.

Terry, I'm so sorry to hear this, but at the same time I know that she was ready to go, and I'm glad it happened quickly and painlessly. She was a wonderful lady and it was a true privilege to have known her. She lived a long and happy life, cheerfully meeting whatever challenges she faced and enjoying the simple pleasures to the fullest, and she radiated good will and benevolence. RIP, Mary.

T... I have been following this thread and clicking on it every time there is a new post. It's obvious that yer mum was a truly special lady. I knew that before this thread but I am rather touched by these posts as it affirms that others know it, as the case should be. These are a true tribute to her and her spirit and to you and yours.

Sad news indeed. I have many happy memories of Mary, she was always very kind and generous to me. One memory I cherish is the wonderful afternoon we spent when she and Tery's dad joined us on a canal trip when they shared an afternoon sailing through Nottingham. Our thoughts are with Terry and Colin.

Apart from the weather , it all went very well ! Father Michael did a good job with the requiem Mass , with a good turn out of family , friends and neighbours - Enough followed us to the Crematorium and we had a decent turn out for the refreshments back at the Church Social Centre . The end of an Era - Mom was the last of her 'crowd' who socialised together before WW II
