Hello

I am trying to locate the lyrics of a song that goes by the name of "O'Grady Drove The Car"

It was written circa 1920 by Tom O'Donnell from Mullaghroe, Co. Sligo

The subject matter is about an ambush in Killaraght, Co. Sligo.

Can anybody help me out with this one!?

Thanks

Alan

Where are you based? Local singers with local knowledge are probably your best bet:

Sligo Traditional Singers Circle are active and have both a Facebook page and website.

If you google the phrase you get a Sligo historic pdf that tells you who wrote it and why, maybe some clues there? My rectangle is not adept at cut&paste.

Thanks, Mrrzy - I missed that! The PDF is an account of the War of Independence in the area (1919-21) and simply states that a Tom O'Donnell wrote such a song. It may well be our GUEST's starting point. Given the area involved, the Sligo singers group is definitely worth checking - if this query isn't one of them broadening a search!

Click here for the pdf which is free e-book version of a book published about twenty years ago.

Regards

I have the words to this somewhere but as I’m moving house I’m not quite sure where. Dominic O’Grady who drove the car was my grandfather. They robbed a post office I believe

That is an interesting read that I think is connected to this thread.

I had no luck on the 'net. If I were looking for the song, I'd look through as much of the citations to the page mentioned by MartinRyan as possible. Sadly, virtually none of them appear to be available online.

My Mom (from Mahanagh) used tell me about the song when I was young. Tom O'Donnell was a close family friend - I heard about him a lot as I grew up. Unfortunately my Mom was tone deaf so she never sang it. I am a singer and would love to find it.
