I've sent him an email & it hasn't bounced so the address seems to be OK.

I've just realised the songs is on 'The Quirky Works of Bernard Bolan' (2002, Austraian Broadcasting Commission) - alas, the words are not.

...and also on his 1974 LP "The Liveliness of the Long Playing Bernard Bolan".

Some of his fine lyrics are here

Bernard is looking for the words & will add them (assuming he finds them!)

G'day,

I do remember posting both versions of Bernard's other 'occupational' song : about his commuting to Circular Quay by (briefly fantasised and piraticised) ferry.

I don't think I ever had much reason to sing this one ... and it isn't on my travelling hard drive.

I'll check the main box ... when I get home ... or after tonight's Committee Meeting ...

I suspect that Bernard is too canny an accountant to bung all his goodies up on the web for a bunch of Aussie (and other ...) free-loaders!

Regar(les)s,

Bob

That's a bit rough, Bob....

Bernard was a corporate lawyer in the olden days, & now is enjoying working full-time in his garden.

In his legal days he was always ready to give advice to poor folkies.

He's a National Treasure!

G'day again,

GUEST of 14 May 13 - 11:09 PM:

No animus to Bernard, a nice bloke ... especially for a Pom ...

I was just suggesting that he's no more part of the latterday "Blog" mindset than I am ... and probably reflecting on the fact that I was happy to learn many of his great songs by heart - and sing them, from memory - with appropriate credit ... and always the good response they deserve.

In the case of his Australia Square song ... it's an amusing song - but set in the high rise / high price environment of his high finance work environment (of the day) ... and a rather gruesome quirky joke line ... Really, just not my song!

I checked all my old archives - right back to pencil & paper transcriptions - and, as I expected , no Australia Square! To get the lyrics ... I would have to locate the LP record player ... remember how to play LPs ... connect it to tape recorder ( or computer input ..) record it ... and play it back, over & over, until I had all the words down ... and I don't really like that specific song ... enough!

Regard(les)s ... ! ...,

Bob

Gruesome?????

Bob, I think you might be confusing this with another of Bernard's songs, set in the AMP Building iirc, the one about the man's head and the lift doors....

Now that's G-R-U-E-S-O-M-E !!!!!!

Where's the stairs?

G'day SqeezeGUEST<

Hmm... You are probably right - I just don't seem to latch into tall city building folksongs ...! They must be just as valid a locale as any - for the "folk songs" of what might be passed off as a "modern Australia" ... but they don't lodge in any particularly accessible patch of my grey cells!

The problem ... for me to transcribe what GUEST,Rottenest needs, remains that I don't have that end of Bernard's repertoire transcribed ... or even recorded on any medium that still talks with my computor (... or an other playing device!

Sandra (in Sydney) advises that Bernard is off trying to excavate them from his own ancient archives ... so we wait and hope!

Regard(les)s,

Bob

G'day again,

I did find a teutonic web site with 5 of Bernard's CDs ... at:

http://www.musik-mp3-download.com/artist/bernard+bolan.html

and that had something like 3 dozen of his song tracks - including Australia Square, from the 4 or 5 CDs - but I didn't interpret how to play them ... let alone download the Australia Square track!

If someone else, with the right linguistic / Music download savvy cracks that ... then GUEST Rottenest might get to listen to / and crib the lyrics!

Of course Bernard may pop up from the veiling greenery... like his infamous gnome ... and give us the lyrics ... without necessity of cracking the Enigma Code ... !

Regard(les)s,

Bob

Australia Square - Bernard Bolan

Every day I wend my way to the middle of Sydney town
To earn my screw and do my due for a company of renown
I do my chore on the 40th floor of a building round and tall
Up in the sky where the rents are high and we all do sweet damn all

Chorus:
Flash goes the light and ring goes the bell and up in the air we go
Sailing in The Summit lift to the land of ice and snow
Up past the names that we've never heard of the people we don't know
I earn my bread with Sydney spread 600 feet below

On the ground floor near the big lift door the crowds all huddle round
In our castle in the air there's all creeds there, there's yellow, white and brown
The doors gape wide, we trudge inside and terror fills the air
Three, two, one, all hope is gone, tell mother I still care

Chrysler, Wimpy, Esso and Clyde and Ord BT and Co
The names go past so devilish fast, we must be near the snow
At thirty three, which is Hitachi, seventeen Japanese go
And that silly little bugger from Colonial Sugar is standing on my toe

It's strange the way that every day as we trace our heavenly track
The ones that want to get out first are always at the back
So push the button, mind the door, stiffen up your knee
Sorry miss, I meant to press number forty three
