OK. Here is what I think are the lyrics to: "You Belong to Me"

Anyone know the lyrics to Homer and Jethro's "Love and Marriage"?

YOU BELONG TO ME

Bring me paw-paws in a paper poke.
Send me money, darlin', when I'm broke.
Make your will out to me when you croak.
You belong to me.

Eat some garlic and I'll love you still,
'Cause I love you and I always will.
That's why they discovered chlorophyll.
You belong to me.

My poor heart would burn without you.
Maybe you'll get heartburn too; that's true.

Let's cross the ocean in our motor boats.
Climb the mountains like two billy-goats.
Just be careful where you sow your oats.
You belong to me.

She rolled her big blue eyeballs at me.
I picked 'em up and rolled 'em back.
I hate the day I saw the pyramids.
That's the day my heart went on the skids.
Now I've got a wife and thirteen kids.
They belong to me (me an' Jethro).
They belong to me (fifty-fifty).
They belong to me.

Subject: Lyr Add: YOUR CLOBBERED HEART (Homer & Jethro)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 09 Sep 10 - 02:51 PM

YOUR CLOBBERED HEART
As sung by Homer & Jethro.
Tune: YOUR CHEATIN' HEART by Hank Williams

1. Your cheatin' lungs will collapse on you.
So will your heart, an' your gizzard, too.
You'll walk the floor like Ernest Tubb
Till you are wore down to a nub.

CHORUS 1: When tears come down like fallin' rain,
They'll splatter on your varicose veins.
But sleep won't come; you'll toss an' roll
Till your eyes look like two gopher holes.

2. Your feet an' heart are cold as ice.
You never treat me very nice.
Someday you'll melt; just wait an' see.
Then you'll have water on the knee.

CHORUS 2: You'll sneeze till you are tied in knots.
You'll have to take distemper shots.
Your head is like a tobacker sack,
So round, so firm, so fully cracked.

From: Jim Dixon

YOU SMELL LIKE TURTLES
As sung by Homer & Jethro.
Tune: SWEET BETSY FROM PIKE a.k.a. VILLIKINS AND HIS DINAH.

1. I live in the swamplands, just me an' my hounds.
Huntin' an' fishin', I live and I scrounge.
I see my girlfriend on Saturday night.
Here's what she says when I hold her so tight:

CHORUS: You smell like turtles, catfish, an' frogs.
You smell like muskrats an' wet huntin' dogs.
You smell like swamp gas, crawdads, an' hogs.
You smell like turtles, catfish, an' frogs.

2. The gal that I love is called Swamp-Fire Sue.
Her eyes are patriotic; they're red, white, and blue.
Eyes like an eagle, a proud lion's heart,
She's strong as an ox but she ain't quite as smart.

3. I try to accept things in life with a smile.
The swamp just grew on me an' lingered awhile.
The swamp's full o' skeeters; they're jumbo in size,
But they can't get near me because of the flies.

From: Jim Dixon
Date: 09 Sep 10 - 02:34 PM

Again, I can't identify the tune, so it might not be a parody:

UP YOURS
As sung by Homer & Jethro.

1. All the poor folks were complainin' so the president declared
We'll have war on poverty and this land's blessings will be shared.
Now the unemployment office can be found in your phone book.
If they can't find a job for you, they'll pay you while they look.

CHORUS: I upped my income. Up yours.
You too can shop in the best stores.
No more a-knockin' at those back doors.
I upped my income. Up yours.

2. I used to gather rags and I would sell 'em by the pound,
But I haven't since the Great Society has come around.
A professional selector of pre-owned materi-ile,
But a rag-picker's not listed in the unemployment files.

3. I used to slave away at the profession that I had.
Everybody looked down on me, but it wasn't all that bad.
The welfare man said I was underprivileged and suppressed,
And he showed me how to write my name on unemployment checks.

Subject: Lyr Add: THAT TIRED RUN-DOWN FEELING (Homer&Jethro
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 09 Sep 10 - 02:30 PM

Here's another song where I don't recognize the tune, and therefore suspect that it is not a parody.

THAT TIRED RUN-DOWN FEELING
As sung by Homer & Jethro.

1. Now the reason our courts are full of divorces and we're havin' more an' more each day,
Well it ain't 'cause couples can't get along like you hear most people say.
If the truth was known our nation wide what starts a marriage reelin'
Too many people have up an' got that tired run-down feelin'.

CHORUS: Tired in the mornin', tired at night.
It's the truth, it's the truth, it's the truth, so help me.
You know I'm a-tellin' you right.
When you got no vigor an' you got no pep,
A good spring tonic will help you to
Get rid of that tired run-down feelin'.

2. Now old Napoleon couldn't 'a' done what he done back when he was a young man,
When he went through Europe like a scalded dog and he conquered 'most all the land.
He led his army on a big white horse, now hist'ry is revealin'.
Old Nay-poleon never had that tired run-down feelin'.

3. Niagara Falls is a wonderful place to go on a honeymoon.
That's where I went many years ago. I think it was in June.
Someday I plan to go there again before I'm old and reelin'.
I don't wanta make that trip with that tired run-down feelin'.

[The oldest use I can find of the phrase "tired, run-down feeling" is in a 1920 report by the US Department of Chemistry (probably a predecessor of the Food and Drug Administration) where it quotes an advertisement for a patent nostrum called Parto-Glory, which had been seized and destroyed on the uncontested charge that it was mislabeled.]

Subject: Lyr Add: DOCTOR QUINCY QUACK (Homer & Jethro)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 09 Sep 10 - 01:11 PM

I don't recognize the tune of this one, so I don't know if it's a parody. This song came out in 1967, so it could not have been inspired by the American TV series called "Quincy, M.E." that ran from 1976 to 1983.

DOCTOR QUINCY QUACK
As sung by Homer & Jethro

1. There's a doctor in our town.
He's a cut-up. He's a clown,
A master with a story or a joke.
He does gags and imitations
While doin' operations.
He keeps his patients laughin' till they croak.

2. Doctor Quack will never fail you.
He'll cure whatever ails you,
Or otherwise, he'll give your money back;
And, in case it's necessary,
He'll call the mortuary,
Our funny fam'ly doctor, Quincy Quack.

3. He devoted all his skill
In developing a pill
To pep up pooped-out people instantly.
Well, it pepped 'em up all right.
They got higher than a kite.
They had to sober up on LSD.

4. Once when I was feelin' low,
To this doctor I did go.
He said, "I'll make you well if there's a chance.
I will cure or I will kill you.
Either way, I'll have to bill you;
Therefore, you'll have to pay me in advance."

REPEAT 2

From: Jim Dixon
Date: 09 Sep 10 - 01:09 PM

The original of this is in the DT: CIELITO LINDO by Quirino Mendoza y Cortez.

This is an odd one in that it mostly isn't meant to be funny. Only the last verse contains a joke, and a feeble one at that.

CIELITO LINDO
As sung by Homer & Jethro.

1. In Mexico, 'neath the mountains' glow,
To the plains below comes a maiden.
What a prize, with her laughing eyes
And her tender sighs, romance laden.

CHORUS: Ay-ay-ay-ay, beautiful heaven.
Your golden voice makes my heart rejoice
And if I'm your choice, that means heaven.

2. An arrow flies through the angry skies
While two roguish eyes are a-gleamin'.
Cupid's dart now has pierced my heart,
And when we're apart, I keep dreamin'. CHORUS

3. She left Mexico to go with a show
With Homer an' Jethro an' Pedro.
She didn't know that there'd be no show.
She wound up singin' a solo. CHORUS TWICE.

Hey kids! I just discovered that The Internet Archive has a collection of about 50 Homer & Jethro songs. About 10 of them have never been posted at Mudcat; I have transcribed them and will be posting the lyrics here soon. A few of them seem to come from radio or TV broadcasts and apparently have never been released as records.

Happy listening! and keep watching this thread for lyrics.

Subject: Lyr Add: WANTED FOR MURDER (Homer & Jethro)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 10 Jun 10 - 07:53 PM

My transcription from the recording found at WFMU's Beware of the Blog - click to play:

WANTED FOR MURDER

CHORUS: We're wanted for murder, wanted for murder,
Wanted for murder by the song-writin' clan.
We massacre their purty tunes,
Amputate their moons and Junes,*
Sing the songs like crazy loons,
We're wanted for murder by the songwriters of our land.

1. It started with "Over the Rainbow." For that we should be hung.
You'd never recognize it as the song that Judy sung.
Then we murdered "Baby, It's Cold Outside" and shore caused quite a fuss.
For that crime we had little Juney Carter a-helpin' us. CHORUS

2. Well the battle of ol' New Orleans may go down in history,
But "The Battle of Kookamonga" was our best atrocity.
And then we sunk the Bismarck in our own way. That's a fact.
Now the writer of it bought a gun. Don't tell him where we're at.

3. That doggie in the winder, we hound-dogged him real good,
And "Poor Ol' Koo-Liger," we set fire to his wood.
Take warnin', you songwriters from New York to Nashville.
We're scourin' all the latest hits for a brand-new song to kill. CHORUS

[* Moon and June are the proverbially clichéd rhyming words too frequently used by lazy or uncreative songwriters.]

[From Homer & Jethro's album "Wanted for Murder" (1966).]

Subject: Lyr Add: GONNA SEND 'EM HOME (Homer & Jethro)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 10 Jun 10 - 05:44 PM

My transcription of the recording found at WFMU's Beware of the Blog (or click to play).

The song seems to be a parody of BOLL WEEVIL*, but they sing it at a faster tempo than BOLL WEEVIL is usually done, and they squeeze in more syllables per line than BOLL WEEVIL has.

GONNA SEND 'EM HOME

1. Oh, the Beatles are four hairy guys and they came from Liverpool.
They play geetars and harmonize like Johnson's old gray mule.
Gonna send 'em home. Gonna send 'em home.

2. Now the first time I saw the four Beatles, they were singin' on the video tape.
Ol' Jack Paar** said, "Here they are," and the whole wide world went ape.
Gonna send 'em home. Gonna send 'em home.

3. The next time I seen the four Beatles, on the really-really-really big show,***
I didn't hear one single tune 'cause the kids were screamin' so.
Gonna send 'em home. Gonna send 'em home.

4. The Beatles got the money. They really hit it big,
But after income taxes, all they had was four black wigs.
Gonna send 'em home. Gonna send 'em home.

5. They're millionaires, they tell us. They made it overnight,
And if you think we're jealous, you're absolutely right.
Gonna send 'em home. Gonna send 'em home.

6. Now acts may come and acts may go, but get this on your mind:
When they come back to the USA, I'll shore be hard to find.
Gonna disappear—while they are here.

[* I wonder if a subtle pun inspired their choice of tune: Beatle = beetle = weevil?

[** Jack Paar showed a film (not video tape) that he obtained from the BBC on his prime-time TV show "The Jack Paar Program," January 3, 1964.

[*** The Beatles appeared live on "The Ed Sullivan Show" on Feb. 9, 1964. "Really big show" was a catch-phrase often attributed to Sullivan.]

Subject: Lyr Add: WHAT A LOUSY DAY WAS YESTERDAY (H & J)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 10 Jun 10 - 04:13 PM

I don't recognize the tune of this one, so I don't know if it's a parody or an original tune.

Here's my transcription from the recording found on this page. (or click to play)

WHAT A LOUSY DAY WAS YESTERDAY

1. What a lousy day was yesterday!
Only yesterday my skies were blue.
Daddy broke my fav'rite Beatle record,
And he made me get a get a haircut too.

2. Only yesterday I went to school.
Teacher said I acted like a fool;
Asked me who cut down the cherry tree.
I said, "Teacher dear, it wasn't me."

BRIDGE 1: All my luck is bad; my life is just one big mistake.
I'd go out and hang myself but I know the rope would break.

3. What a lousy day was yesterday!
Daddy gave my little dog away.
They bought a brand new home and left me flat,
And they won't even tell me where it's at.

BRIDGE 2: Day late and a dollar short; my life has been like this.
I'd go out and shoot myself but I know that I would miss.

4. Only yesterday I learned my lesson:
Always keep on hopin' for the best.
If you ever need a friend, just try and find one,
'Cause a friend in need ain't nothin' but a pest.

What a lousy day was yesterday!
What a lousy day was yesterday!
What a lousy day was yesterday! (FADE)

[Sung by Homer & Jethro on the album "Wanted for Murder" (RCA 3673, 1966).]

Subject: Lyr Add: BOLL WEEVIL (Homer & Jethro)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 10 Jun 10 - 01:46 PM

This isn't so much a parody as one version of a whole family of related folk songs, some of which are given in this thread: Lyr Add: Mister Boll Weevil.

My transcription from the recording found at WFMU's Beware of the Blog:

BOLL WEEVIL

Oh, the boll weevil an' the little black bug come from Mexico, they say,
Come all the way to Texas, just a-lookin' for a place to stay,
Just a-lookin' for a home, just a-lookin' for a home.

The first time I see the boll weevil, he was settin' on the square.
The next time I see the boll weevil, got all his fam'ly there,
Just a-lookin' for a home, just a-lookin' for a home.

The farmer say to the weevil, "What makes your head so red?"
The weevil say to the farmer, "It's a wonder I ain't dead,
Just a-lookin' for a home, just a-lookin' for a home."

The captain say to the missus, "What do you think of that?
The boll weevil done made a nest in my best Sunday hat.
Why not have a home? Why not have a home?"

The boll weevil got half the cotton. The merchant got the rest.
Didn't leave the farmer's wife but one ol' cotton dress.
It's full o' holes. It's full o' holes.

If anyone should ask you who was it made this song,
Just say that Homer and Jethro have done been here and gone,
Just a-lookin' for a home, just a-lookin' for a home.

[Originally recorded by Homer & Jethro as a 78-rpm record, (a) DON'T LET YOUR SWEET LOVE DIE, b/w (b) BOLL WEEVIL, King 583, 1947. It is also on their album "The Best of Homer & Jethro: Hall of Fame 2001," Federal Records 501, 2002.]

p.s. Before I go any further, I should state that, in response to Wanita's request, I searched for WILL YOU LOVE ME WHEN, and all I found was the information that it was recorded by Homer & Jethro on their album "Songs My Mother Never Sang" (RCA Victor LPM 2286, 1961). I failed to find any online recordings or lyrics.

However, I did find several other songs, and I will be posting them shortly.

Subject: Lyr Add: SANTA CLAUS THE ORIGINAL HIPPIE (H & J)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 10 Jun 10 - 12:28 PM

Transcribed from a sound file found with SkreemR.org (a useful search engine you might want to bookmark).

The tune reminds me of PAPA'S ON THE HOUSETOP, but not quite the same.

SANTA CLAUS THE ORIGINAL HIPPIE
Homer and Jethro

1. Well, who wore long hair and a fuzzy beard
Before any hippie was ever here,
From patent leather boots and psychedelic clothes
And little granny glasses upon his nose?
Santy Claus, the original hippie.

2. Motorcycle gangs with wide leather belts,
Funny-lookin' caps, their prides would melt
If they could take a look at Santy Claus's buckle.
His belly's all pot. That's why he can chuckle—
Santy Claus, the original hippie.

BRIDGE: Who is the guy who could always fly
Long before the Wright brothers learned to try?
He's been takin' trips since 1583,
And he can take a trip without LSD.

3. Who wears a collar and cuffs of fur?
For all we know, there's beads under there,
'Cause he was the first to smell hippie clothes.
That's why his finger's up against his nose—
Santy Claus, the original hippie.

REPEAT BRIDGE AND VERSE 3

Hip, hip, hip, hippie.
Hip, hip, hip, hippie. (FADE)

[Recorded by Homer & Jethro on "Cool Crazy Christmas" (Victor LSP 4001, 1968).]

some more PFFFFT you were gone lyrics...in case anyone out there
still sings it...

You had six kids and I had eleven
And we had eight more just a bloomin' like flowers
I wish you'd come back and help me my darlin'
Your kids and my kids are beatin' up ours.

Where, oh where, are you tonight,
Why did you leave me here all alone?
I searched the world over and I thought I'd found true love
You met another and PFFFT! you were gone.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Your paw was a drinker and it made him look awful
Your poor old mother, the looks he would give her
Bags under his eyes, I remember he looked like
A butcher peekin' over two pounds of liver.

Where, oh where, are you tonight,
Why did you leave me here all alone?
I searched the world over and I thought I'd found true love
You met another and PFFFT! you were gone.

I can't really find any reference on the Internet to prove that Homer & Jethro actually sang "Phfft! You Were Gone." It appears to me that Bob Newman sang this song on his "The Kentucky Colonel" album in 1959. He is listed as a comedian (http://www.hillbilly-music.com/groups/story/index.php?groupid=12013) so this is probably where the first parody was done. Of course, later versions of this song appeared by Archie Campbell on his "Have A Laugh On Me" album in 1966, and by Buck Owens on his "Too Old To Cut The Mustard" album in 1972. This latter album was released after Hee Haw aired. If you have an actual album name and date where Homer & Jethro sang this song, please post it here. Thanks!

Been looking for one not listed here: The Girl From Possum Holler (tune of Girl from Ipanema) All I can remember is

Short and fat and squat and ugly
The girl from Possum Holler goes walkin
And when she passes, each one she passes goes
Bleeecch

When you see her walkin from the back
It looks like two pigs fightin in a 'tater sack
And when she passes, each one she passes goes
Bleeecch

Oh, wow that girl is so ugly
She has an excess of ugly
How can one girl be so ugly
Every day when she walks to the crick
Even the (catfish?) get sick....

Not sure about that last line. I'm trying to think back 40 years here!

BTW, when Homer died, Jethro did a wonderful job working with Steve Goodman for quite a few years.

Blessings!

From: Gene

Cold Cold Heart
Homer & Jethro

I tried so hard my dear to show
That you're my ev'ry dream [....]
yet every time I see your face
It makes me want to scream [....]
You look much better to me, dear
The farther we're apart [....]
yore liver may be warm but you
Have got a Cold Cold Heart [....]

You'll never know how much it hurts
to see you sit and cry
but you could cry much better
If you had another eye
one look at you and I am thru
It makes my eyeball smart
I wish that you'd fall off your broom
And break your Cold Cold Heart

There was a time one look at you
Could make my heart sing
Now every time I look at you I think
I found 'THE THING'
when I see you walk in the room
It makes the tear drops start
Why don't you go sit on a stove
And melt your cold cold heart ...

Note. [....] = sound effects

Subject: Lyr Add: PHFFT YOU WERE GONE (Heather, Campbell)
From: GUEST
Date: 25 Nov 02 - 01:20 AM

OOOPS! first attempt to post
musta wound up in NEVER NEVER LAND...

I Found these in an old songbook...

FWIW DEPT:
Gloom, Dispair and Agony On Me
is a totally different song, and a different
verse was sung on HEE HAW almost every week

PHFFT YOU WERE GONE
Written by: SUSAN HEATHER

Where, oh, where, where would I be?
Without my Jesus comforting me
For I'll sing his praises as I travel on
Today, tomorrow, till phfft! you are gone.

Take money or God, you can't serve two masters
For you will love one, the other you'll hate
And that is the cause of this world's disasters
Make up your mind now, before it's too late.

We don't break God's laws, but we break against them
Remember this friends, as life moves along
Can't you hear the voice of youth out there asking?
"Why do you do what you tell us is wrong?"

CHORUS

Each time that you give, don't get up and shout it
For He always knows what good deeds you do
You'll get your reward, there's no doubt about it
He sees in secret and He will pay you.

CHORUS

-------------------

PHFFT YOU WERE GONE
Original written by: SUSAN HEATHER
A version was recorded by: Archie Campbell

Where oh where are you tonight?
Why did you leave me here all alone?
I searched the world over and thought I'd find true love
You met another and phfft you were gone.

I miss you so much, the 'taters need diggin'
The corn in the field, it needs pickin' now
How well I recall the first time I saw you
You looked so pretty a-pullin' the plow.

CHORUS

Your lips were as red as ripe boysenberries
Your ears were as big as sails in the breeze
Your two eyes bugged out like old pop-eyed mullets
Your hair, like hay-wire, hung down to you knees.

CHORUS

I thought my love was all that you wanted
I still can't believe my gold made you fall
I thought you would leave the hogs in the pigpen
I was mistaken, for you took them all.

CHORUS

I saw your buck teeth and that struck me funny
I'm sorry to say, I wanted to laugh
You told me the truth, you tooth cost you money
You said it cost a buck and a half.

CHORUS

I seem to remember finding the original “Pffft you are gone” lyrics somewhere; it turns out it's an old gospel tune and the Hee Haw! version was just a parody of the original.

Anyone else remember the older gospel version?

Your thread led me to Kazaa to try and find those dudes.

There are probably over a 100 folks sharing their files. Run the search more than once. i.e. after noting Christmas was an album - putting it into the query gave a list of only songs from that album.

It is a great service - I have picked up Jimmie Rodgers, the Carter Family etc . with great ease.

It is about time I started to post back some of my folk collection.

I'll start posting some of their lyrics to the MC.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

My daddy he swore he would never quit drinkin'
My mother got down on her knees to beg,
Then one night my daddy came home cold sober,
The dog didn't know him and he bit off his leg,
Where oh where are you tonight
Why did you leave me here all alone,
I searched the world over and thought I'd found true love,
You met another and thhhhhhhhthuppppp you were gone.

There are 10 songs in the DT, including Winchester Cathedral.

Also, there are a number of threads in the Forum where we've talked about various songs, and a number of the songs are there as well.

IF you go up to the top of the screen, where it says Lyrics and Knowledge Search. Putting Homer and Jethro willget you all the songs and threads.
