Subject: Obit: Ray Manzarek - 'Doors' co-founder
From: bobad
Date: 20 May 13 - 06:23 PM

Ray Manzarek, the keyboardist and founding member of The Doors who had a dramatic impact on rock 'n' roll, has died. He was 74.

Publicist Heidi Robinson-Fitzgerald says Manzarek died Monday at the RoMed Clinic in Rosenheim, Germany, surrounded by his family. Robinson-Fitzgerald says his manager, Tom Vitorino, confirmed Manzarek died around 3:30 p.m. EDT. He had bile duct cancer.

Manzarek founded The Doors after meeting then-poet Jim Morrison in California. The band went on to become one of the most successful rock 'n' roll acts to emerge from the 1960s and continues to resonate with fans decades after Morrison's death brought an effective end to the band.

The Chicago native continued to remain active in music after Morrison's 1971 death. He briefly tried to hold the band together by serving as vocalist, but eventually the group fell apart. He played in other bands over the years, produced other acts, became an author and worked on films.

The Doors were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Manzarek is among the most notable keyboard players in rock history. His lead-instrument work with the band at a time when the guitar often dominated added a distinct end-times flavour that matched Morrison's often out there imagery and persona.

The group is best known for hits like "L.A.Woman,'' ''Break On Through to the Other Side," ''The End" and ''Light My Fire" — a song particularly colored by his keyboard work — and came to symbolize the decadence of Los Angeles as the counterculture grew in the U.S.

Manzarek is survived by his wife, Dorothy, his son Pablo and two brothers, Rick and James.

I bought the doors (with its distinctive logo) music for that album and learned to play the intro to Light My Fire etc

Know the hits but... I'm off to listen to

'When the Music's Over'

So much of stuff then sounds so naive now because people can copy it so easily -

The guitar solo in Light My Fire is still pretty good. You could get away with that now 40+ years later

The End was interesting too.

How many 11 minute tracks do people do now.

And Jim Morrison had a very rich voice.

I first heard light my fire on juke box jury when it was voted a miss. Bought it the next day and bought all the other albums when I raised the cash. Strangely , I played 'the doors' making of, DVD on Sunday and had the album on this afternoon. RIP Ray.

Mark, It looks like MediaMass is a satire site. That's their attempt at humor.

Wikipedia still has his date of death on May 20.

I am afraid it looks like the story is true. It has been reported on several sites and he had been suffering from cancer.

"Bruch an durch zur anderen seite"

Rest im frieden

if there's any consolation, Rosenheim is in a beautiful region in west upper Bavaria, near the Austrian border

I've known Ray since I was 13. He was the keyboardist and lead vocalist for my brother's group, before the 'Doors'. My brother was the drummer, and original drummer for the 'Doors', when they were first forming. Rick(guitarist) and Jimmy Manczarek (harmonica and also keyboardist and back up vocalist), were also in the band. Jimmy, and John Sebastian, also played harmonica on the 'Doors' albums. Ray was an early influence on my keyboard work, as were Ferrante and Teicher. Jim Morrison, was the lead singer for my brother's group, 'Rick and the Ravens' before forming the 'Doors' with Ray, whom he met at UCLA. At the time, they strapped a guitar on Jim, (he really didn't play a guitar), and he faced the drummer, away from the audience, and sang.
It was through Ray, and the 'Doors' that my brother, Vinny was entered into the 'Rock and Roll Hall of Fame'.
Danny Sugarman, whose father was Burt Sugarman, producer of the TV show, 'The Midnight Special', was a classmate of mine, also the author of 'Nobody Gets Out of Here Alive', which was used extensively for Oliver Stone's movie, 'The Doors'. We used to put up flyers for the 'Doors' when they were just staring. Jim thought of Danny as his 'muse'. Danny died quite a few years ago.
It was Ray, upon seeing myself and a friend of mine, Bill let us in to their Hollywood Bowl concert, in 1968, where we watched the 'Doors' play from backstage, and went to the after concert reception/party in the basement of the Bowl, afterwards.
I guess I could go on quite a bit about this bit of musical history, of our earlier years, but I guess it would suffice to say, "Ray, thank you...you inspired many, including myself, you were ALWAYS respectful, and a friend.....I guess we'll see you later...."

Anybody else out there who may be interested, I've got more info, if you want.

R.I.P...and take it easy....

GfS

Isn't Rosenheim in Niederbayern? I though Oberbayern was more north and East. I shall have to ask friends... Bavaria is a lovely place though - there are worse to check out of.

SJ Lepak, This from the family, I don't believe to the press:

Ray was touring, in Europe, with an entourage which included his wife, Dorothy, and two sons and Rick, his brother, and former band mate. He was aware that he was ill, but the treatments made him weak, so he may have discontinued them, or (at this point, I don't know what, for sure), he was getting along, functioning, and on tour....at one point, he felt weak enough to go get checked out in the hospital, so he went.., and they admitted him. He requested his keyboards in, (maybe with a small mixer and headphones, I'm not sure)..and played with his brother, Rick on guitar.
It wound down, and he laid down, in bed and went to sleep, and never woke up.

That is about as up to date as I can give you, and the source was Rick, who was there.

Regards,

GfS

NPR's Fresh Air replayed a 1998 interview with him that was pretty amazing: showing the various music inspirations and ideas for Doors songs.
