Subject: Lyr Add: THE POOR LONELY WIDOW (Bob Copper) From: Herga Kitty Date: 22 May 13 - 05:07 AM Here you are Kim - hope this is what you were looking for! THE POOR LONELY WIDOW Here are the words as given by Bob Copper in Songs and Southern Breezes (I find I've bent them somewhat over the years in the version I actually sing) If you'll give attention the truth I will mention My trials and my troubles to you I'll explain I'm a poor lonely widow I'm left unprotected But I'm ready and willing to marry again Three husbands I've had, but they're all dead and buried The first one he died rather strange I confess When I woke in the morning I found he was choking He died so they say for the want of his breath I can dance, I can sing, I'm as good now as ever Fond of my whiskey and good in a row Just forty five, both witty and clever I wonder if anyone will marry me now. When I was young all the boys they came courting If I went to the canteen for whiskey or gin It was for the same thing that I had a longing To get fresh all the week sure I thought it no sin Poor Tim did the same thing, he was fond of his whiskey I can't sleep at night sure I miss him somehow As since he has died I feel quite broken-hearted I wonder if anyone will marry me now Six months after Tim the wide world seemed departed I wed with one Barney, a cobbler by trade When I think how he died I was again broken-hearted I wished once again boys that I was a maid For we both took to drinking and then we got fighting Then with his lapstone he struck me I vow I up with the poker and settled my joker I wonder if anyone will marry me now So come all you young men and don't keep me waiting For I feel like a fish that is out of the sea If I don't soon get married it's true what I am stating I shall go wrong if some young man don't marry me For I've got a blind pig, an old bull and a cow too I've got some old cocks and old hens too I vow And there's many a good tune played on an old fiddle I wonder if anyone will marry me now Kitty |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Song about marriage/widowhood From: Herga Kitty Date: 22 May 13 - 02:43 AM Sounds as though it's probably The Poor Lonely Widow - I originally found it in Bob Copper's book, Songs and Southern Breezes. "I can dance, I can sing, I'm as good now as ever, fond of me whisky and good in a row; Just forty five, both witty and clever, and I wonder if anyone will marry me now..." Haven't time to post more at the moment, but will later if no one else has got there first! Kitty |
Subject: Lyr Req: Song about marriage/widowhood From: GUEST,Kim C Date: 21 May 13 - 02:08 PM I'm trying to help a friend find a comic song by this description she gave me: "'when I was a young girl' that starts out primping for nice young men , takes the singer through marriage and widowhood, and takes her full circle to Merry Widow, still primping for nice young men." Nothing comes immediately to mind for me, and if I search "when I was a young girl" I get The Unfortunate Maid, which I'm sure isn't what she had in mind. I've also found the standard songs about "why did I ever get married" but nothing matching this description. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks! |
