Subject: Any DIY gatherings this weekend From: GUEST,Square The Circle Date: 23 May 13 - 07:52 AM I was wondering if there were any DIY Folk gathering in the west of the country this Bank Holiday Weekend. Don't want a big festival just a campsite, pub or bunk house. South Wales or South West. |

Subject: RE: Any DIY gatherings this weekend From: GUEST Date: 23 May 13 - 04:46 PM Hope this is not too much of a highjack but any DIY stuff in the north west UK? I know Chester is this weekend but you can only camp if you buy a weekend ticket and I'm not rich enough for that. |
Subject: RE: Any DIY gatherings this weekend From: GUEST,Blandiver Date: 23 May 13 - 05:34 PM I'm having a few mates over to rehang the doors and put a few shelves up. Shanties optional; ballads compulsory. The more the merrier... |

Subject: RE: Any DIY gatherings this weekend From: Mo the caller Date: 23 May 13 - 06:58 PM There is another caravan site in Kelsall, Northwood Hall not sure how much they charge for tents (if that's what you have). At the top of the village is a pub the Farmers Arms. They have recently reopened under new management, but in the past I've seen campervans on their car park. The festival campsites are based round the Lord Binning (Morris Dancer), down at the other end of the village, and since they are free the cost of a season ticket compares well with a commercial caravan site. The workshops and sessions at Chester Festival are free. |

Subject: RE: Any DIY gatherings this weekend From: Richard Bridge Date: 23 May 13 - 11:29 PM Well, I need to fit some new downlights in the caravan and wire them up, and wire up the amp for the sub in it, and sort a radio aerial for it too. |

Subject: RE: Any DIY gatherings this weekend From: Joe Offer Date: 24 May 13 - 03:23 AM Ok so DIY means "do-it-yourself" home handyman work in the US. What's it mean in the UK? -Joe- |
Subject: RE: Any DIY gatherings this weekend From: GUEST,Blandiver Date: 24 May 13 - 03:53 AM It's pretty much the same here, Joe (see my above post) but it's become a cultural term too, with self publishing & independent record production described as DIY since the days of punk & before. Now more relevant than ever, there's a feature in the current fRoots magazine: http://www.frootsmag.com/ |
Subject: RE: Any DIY gatherings this weekend From: Richard Bridge Date: 24 May 13 - 03:57 AM It also means a "festival" with no booked performers, but camping and possibly a large campfire around which all gather to play or sing as if in a song-circle (US) or singaround (UK) - usually tunes being welcome as well as songs. Guru - I am aiming to be at Piggy early Friday or possibly even pm Thursday although the ceilidh does not attract me. |
Subject: RE: Any DIY gatherings this weekend From: My guru always said Date: 24 May 13 - 04:18 AM Richard: Ah, of course! I see that pre-booking is needed for Pigs Ear now. Does that mean we can't just pop in to the pub? |
