Subject: RE: Shopping for a new 12-string guitar From: GUEST,Big Ballad Singer Date: 25 May 13 - 11:19 PM Contacted the person that you linked to, midchuck. We live about 30 minutes from each other and are making plans to meet so I can check out the guitar. In the meantime, if anyone wants to buy an evil, monstrous, noisemaking electric guitar amplifier, let me know ;) I've got a Winfield Amplifiers Elizabeth model amp for sale. Originally built as a head, but converted by Winfield Thomas himself into a 1X12 combo amp. 40 watts, GORGEOUS vintage-Fender-like tones. I am concentrating so much more on acoustic right now that keeping such a great amp around unused seems wrong. Also, too, I need to fund the 12-string purchase. Thanks for all the help so far! |
Subject: RE: Shopping for a new 12-string guitar From: EBarnacle Date: 25 May 13 - 11:15 PM A good friend of mine, Dan Einbender, is auctioning most of his instrument collection, including his 12 strings. The auction site can be found here: http://pickerspalace.com/grammy_winners_musical_instrument_collection_ He's doing this because he is in desperate need of money to avoid losing his home. |

Subject: RE: Shopping for a new 12-string guitar From: GUEST,gillymor Date: 24 May 13 - 08:22 PM A buddy of mine has a Taylor Leo Kottke model, I believe it's a KSM-12 and it sounds fantastic and plays like butter all the way up the neck, even when playing fingerstyle. I think you can find one used for around 1600 which might be stretching your budget. |
Subject: RE: Shopping for a new 12-string guitar From: kendall Date: 24 May 13 - 07:27 PM I wish you could afford the best 12 string on earth, an Apollonio, but that price says used, and I can't imagine anyone selling an Apollo for that price. |
Subject: RE: Shopping for a new 12-string guitar From: GUEST,alex s no cookie Date: 24 May 13 - 07:24 PM also look at Takamine 12 strings - I've used one for 33 years in a ceilidh band and it's still going strong. Nice easy action and very reliable. |
Subject: RE: Shopping for a new 12-string guitar From: Richard Bridge Date: 24 May 13 - 07:06 PM It depends on what you want. My Mugen THE78-12 is as pretty and deep sounding as any - to the extent that my guitar tech who has two Martin 12s and a Maton 12, lusts after it. You MAY find one on ebay and it will be a lot less than your target figure. I know a girl over here in the UK who MIGHT be capable of being parted from her Ovation 12 - was a LOT of money new, carbon fibre front, onboard tuner and undersaddle and preamp, I think it's an Adamas. She now plays a Breedlove 6. In both cases I have known Washburns and Simon and Patricks that were louder - but much coarser. |
Subject: RE: Shopping for a new 12-string guitar From: PHJim Date: 24 May 13 - 05:40 PM While I'm not a huge fan of either Guild or Taylor six strings, the best 12s I have played were Guilds and Taylors. I also like older Epiphones. |
Subject: RE: Shopping for a new 12-string guitar From: GUEST,Ian G Date: 24 May 13 - 05:33 PM The Guilds are fine instruments. Try a Faith Saturn which are, in my opinion, amazing value for money. |
Subject: Shopping for a new 12-string guitar From: Big Ballad Singer Date: 24 May 13 - 04:22 PM My budget is about $1200, give or take a couple bucks. I've been told at a guitar forum I belong to that older USA Guilds have nice wide, strong necks. I'm looking for a 12er that has and can maintain low action. I will be tuning down to C or D and using a capo. I did this with a mid-level Yamaha I had and it was great. Never should have sold that one. The guitar won't need to have electronics; I can have a passive pickup installed and use my Baggs preamp which I love with a six-string I own. Anyone have a good 12 for sale? Recommend one? I don't mind having one shipped but I'd also love to busk my way four or five hours or a day or whatever in one direction to go get one ;) Thanks! Oh, and since all my money and family troubles I had a good long stretch ago, things are definitely on the upswing! |
