Subject: Emergency Auction
From: EBarnacle
Date: 25 May 13 - 11:29 PM

My friend, Dan Einbender, is in serious financial straits. In order to keep from being foreclosed and evicted, he has put most of the better pieces of his instrument collection up for auction at this site.

These are the instruments of a serious professional musician and he has come down to the choice between keeping his instruments and keeping a roof over his head.

If anyone who wins one of these instruments is coming to Old Songs, I will take it upon myself to deliver the appropriate instruments to Altamont. See you there.

So sad, but WOW what a variety of superb instruments-- an entire orchestra of folk instruments in fact.

What an honor it would be to win one, use it lovingly for a year, and gift it back to him!

No sympathy.

The fourth rule of life is...NEVER go into debt.

Thank you, MudElf for fixing up the link.

Garg, I hope you never find yourself in need. This person has spent his life in various lowpaid pursuits, as well as working as a performer in a field which rewards few--Folk Music.

Many of these pursuits have involved youth training and environmental education.

While I find many of his life choices questionable, the fact is that he has been able to squeek by on what he has brought in, often providing the "welcoming house by the side of the road" for others. He is, as attested by his Grammy, a very talented musician. To paraphrase an old punch line, "Where's your Grammy, Gargoyle?"

He has hit on a hard patch and is making a choice. Things are only things but a roof overhead is to be valued. Things can be replaced.

Frankly, given his sympathy for others, I hope Garg DOES find himself in need and we can all then scoff at him.

Damn. I knew Dan Einbender as a teenager. I'm not in the market for instruments but I'd like to help. Can I send a check somewhere?

Maybe someone could set up a Paypal account for donations? Or could send an address to folks who'd like to send a check to help out?

The way I see it, we owe a lot to people like Dan, who've always given their time and talents for people and causes. We're the ones in debt.

On this thread we have had exactly the kind of post that makes me want to delete Mudcat, and everything about it, from my computer.
Thankfully, his contribution has been swamped by helpful and positive comments.

When I read the OP I felt very saddened and a bit helpless, being on another continent and not particularly well off, but I would happily make a contribution if some kind of fund was set up.

I hope he is left with at least a basic instrument to allow him to continue to bring happiness through his music.

Eddie

It's a gracious and grateful idea. I've sent a PM to EBarnacle asking how we can help with gifts. I liked Susan's idea as well.

I will contact the friend who referred me to Dan's auction to see how we can get money to him with relative anonymity.

Yes, he is hanging on to several of his instruments so he can keep trying to earn a sorta living.

eddie1 - don't confuse the institution with one of its visitors.

gargoyle - peoples situations change sometimes because of their own making often not. Your comment is ridiculously crass.

There is no suggestion that these instruments aren't paid for is there?

Given that very few people - apart from those who inherit money or come from very rich backgrounds - can afford to buy property without incurring debt, then most people are at risk from their circumstances changing. Employment - divorce - illness to name a few.

An article from 2009, but little has changed to suggest it is now different - proximity to homelessness - in fact it is likely worse.

I'm glad that you are in a position to be so smug.

I called and talked to Scott, who's in charge of Pickers Palace (and is a very nice guy).   He said Dan was pleased with the results of the auction.
I won the Glenn dulcimer. I lucked out. Scott said it was on a wall, so it's in fine shape. I'll be having them mail it, since it's inexpensive.

I talked to Scott on the 30th. He was too busy to take my information at the time, so he said he'd call back "tomorrow".

He didn't.

I called again and left a message. I sent an e-mail. Nothing. Now, when I call, I go straight to "leave a message".

I hope he's OK, but I see other auctions going on. Since it's so long after the event, and I'm being so thoroughly ignored, I suspect that's the end.

If EBarnacle can ask, that would be good. If he doesn't want to get involved, that's OK too. I can just chalk it up to making a mistake believing this auction was for real and trusting the guy putting it on. Lesson learned re "PickersPalace". Never Again.

Thanks, EBarnacle, for your help and for telling us about this in the first place.

I talked to Scott and everything's good. He's been up to his eyeballs in auction. First impression of "very nice guy" stands.

I'm really looking forward to getting this dulcimer!
I wonder if anyone else from Mudcat won anything.

72 days after the auction closed...
No dulcimer.

You're going to have to imagine the subtext to glean what I'm thinking about this experience, but I'm done with it.

I just wonder where the dulcimer is now.

So the website has been shut down and the Facebook page has been inactive since they put a notice up (in July) that the coin they had on consignment was a fake.

Don't think there hasn't been e-mail and phone calls trying to get the dulcimer. Dan got money to stay afloat, and I'm glad, but I wonder if any other buyers got hosed.

I'm glad Dan did OK and EBarnacle was being a good guy.

He just was creating a new website.

I spoke to Scott one last time in August. He said he'd check on the item. That was the last I heard from him. I won the dulcimer, I paid him, and I never got it. I got screwed.
