There was another "Beulah Land" sung at the FSGW Getaway, DWELLING IN BEULAH LAND. It's a real rouser - anybody know where I can find the music for it?.
-Joe Offer-

Oh - you can Click here. Click here for lots of interesting gospel (and other) MIDI arrangements.

Joe,

It's on Helen Schneyer's first Folk-Legacy recording - "Ballads, Broadsides and Hymns" - FSI-50.

Joe, I tried scanning "Dwelling in Beulah Land" from my hymnal, but it wasn't very successful. I'll photocopy it & mail it to you, if you like. Send me an email w/ your address, if you want it.

Barbara

We do Beaulah Land as 3 part harmony and nicked it from "Swan Arcade" (I think) and the lyrics are:

DWELLING IN BEULAHLAND

Far away the noise of strife upon my ears is falling
Then I know the sins of earth beset on every hand
Doubt and fear and things of earth in vain to me are calling
None of these shall move me from Beulahland

For I'm living on a mountain underneath a cloudless sky
I'm drinking from the fountain that never will run dry
I'm feasting on the manna from a bountiful supply
For I am dwelling in Beulahland

Far below a storm of doubt upon my ears is beating
Sons of men in battle and the enemy withstand
Safe am I within the castle of God's love retreating
Nothing here can reach me, 'tis Beulahland.

For I'm living on a mountain underneath a cloudless sky
I'm drinking from the fountain that never will run dry
I'm feasting on the manna from a bountiful supply
For I am dwelling in Beulahland

Let the stormy breezes blow, their cry cannot alarm me
I am safely sheltered here, protected by God's hand
Here the sun is always shining, here there's naught can harm me
I am safe forever in Beulahland

For I'm living on a mountain underneath a cloudless sky
I'm drinking from the fountain that never will run dry
I'm feasting on the manna from a bountiful supply
For I am dwelling in Beulahland

Enjoy!

Cheers,
Hille

Subject: Lyr Add: DWELLING IN BEULAH LAND (C. Austin Miles)
From: Jim Dixon

The sheet music in the Levy collection is a "theme and variation" composition for piano only. (It might not even be the same song.)

Musical notation for 4 voices, with the following lyrics, can be seen in Songs of Pentecostal Power, Complete, edited by R. E. Winsett (Chattanooga: R. E. Winsett, 1908), page 236:

[I have boldfaced the words that are different from the version in the DT. Note there is one additional verse.]

DWELLING IN BEULAH LAND
(C. Austin Miles)

1. Far away the noise of strife upon my ear is falling.
Then I know the sins of earth beset on every hand.
Doubt and fear and things of earth in vain to me are calling.
None of these shall move me from Beulah land.

CHORUS: I'm living on the mountain underneath a cloudless sky. (Praise God!)
I'm drinking at the fountain that never shall run dry.
O yes! I'm feasting on the manna from a bountiful supply,
For I am dwelling in Beulah land.

2. Far below the storm of doubt upon the world is beating.
Sons of men in battle long the enemy withstand.
Safe am I within the castle of God's word retreating.
Nothing then can reach me. 'Tis Beulah land.

3. Let the stormy breezes blow. Their cry cannot alarm me.
I am safely sheltered here, protected by God's hand.
Here the sun is always shining. Here there's naught can harm me.
I am safe forever in Beulah land.

4. Viewing here the works of God, I sink in contemplation,
Hearing now His blessed voice, I see the way He planned.
Dwelling in the Spirit, here I learn of full salvation.
Gladly will I tarry in Beulah land.

This song is prime for parodies, well worth noting here. I have a tape of folklorist Barre Toelken in concert discussing and singing parodies of this song (for more about Toelken, see Weber Studies article and Westminster College article for citations).

My Dad, John Dwyer, taped the concert that was probably in the late 1970s up to the mid 1980s. I'll dig it out and make copies if anyone is interested (and will come back and post more information about the concert once I find the tape).

However, the song the original requester wanted is a different song: BEULAH LAND, words by Edgar Page Stites [sometimes cited as Edgar Page], music by J. R. Sweney.

Lyrics have been posted in a separate thread: Lyr Add: BEULAH LAND.

The "Dwelling in Beulah Land" is a riff, a reference to, not a parody of. Not to do with the original request, but still quite interesting to consider. Maybe these are discussed elsewhere, but they aren't referenced in the related threads linked above.

Keith Kendrick has also recorded a great version on his CD 'Songs from the Derbyshire Coast' - I don't know what the connection is, but who cares? It's just, as he says, a fun track.

I composed this a few years back to the "Dwelling in Beulah Land" tune. We performed it as Hen's Teeth a few times

MARINA LAND.
(Robin Madge) © 2001

Sunlight sparkles on the water, waves are gently lapping,
Peace and calm surround me in the early morning sun.
Gentle movements down below, above the halyards tapping,
Life upon the water can be such fun

CHORUS
I am sitting on the water on a thirty-two foot yacht,
I go lying on the sundeck whenever it is hot.
I'm reflecting on the glory of everything I've got
As I live in Marina Land.

Here we are upon the Itchen, or perhaps the Hamble,
I navigate by GPS to get from place to place.
I like to moor beside a pub where I can take a ramble,
Sink a pint or three and then it's back to base.

All around is chrome and plastic finished brightly shining,
Coloured ropes and pennants abound on every side.
Hulls of white with woodwork details, neatly painted lining,
A glittering assembly upon the tide.

Here was once a working port with industry and labour,
Here was a community but everything must pass.
Corporate identity divided friend from neighbour,
Today another kind of muck goes with the brass.

On and ever onward, development is spreading,
Basins, docks, marinas extending more and more.
An aluminium forest, onward it is treading,
Marching to engulf the coast of every shore.

I'm told that the tune is also used for a national anthem from some part of Africa, don't know which country.
