Subject: Tech: WIndows XP taskbar problem From: Murray MacLeod Date: 31 May 13 - 02:24 PM For some reason, the taskbar on my computer (Windows XP , IE 8 ) has decided to create a black hole right next to the "Start" button, and that is where all minimized windows now go ...previously each minimized window had its own little visible space right across the taskbar. I have tried resetting IE8 to default settings, and have also messed with the taskbar settings on Control Panel, but to no avail. I suspect that the more technologically savvy Mudcatters can solve this problem with ease , so ...any suggestions ? TIA for any ideas ... |
Subject: RE: Tech: Windows XP taskbar problem From: JohnInKansas Date: 31 May 13 - 04:43 PM Since you say your black hole is "right next to the Start button" assume you're talking about the main bar that's usually at the bottom of the screen. If you right click on a blank spot on the toolbar, you should get a menu for toolbar management. (You might have to right click in the black hole - that's something I've never seen?) If you click "Properties" on the menu that comes up, you should get a new little window labelled "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties." I don't have an XP to look at, but in my Win7 on the Taskbar Tab there's a "Taskbar Buttons" that's normally set to "Never Combine" but the dropdown offers "Always Combine" or "Combine When Taskbar is Full." While it's only a guess - it sounds like you've "collapsed" all your buttons into one (black) button hole. As indicated, I don't have an XP handy, and things may have changed, but I suspect that the "right click a blank spot" on the toolbar may get you to a menu that will help if you poke enough things on it. (But it's only a guess.) If you haven't tried it, a "reboot" sometimes helps - but nobody really knows why. John |
Subject: RE: Tech: Windows XP taskbar problem From: bobad Date: 31 May 13 - 04:54 PM Haven't used XP for quite a while I recall there being a line of tiny arrows on the task bar which you could click and drag to expand or contract it. |

Subject: RE: Tech: Windows XP taskbar problem From: Murray MacLeod Date: 31 May 13 - 06:07 PM Thank you for all your suggestions, much appreciated ...turns out that bobad's suggestion was on the mark ...although I wouldn't describe them as arrows ...more like dots... but yes, clicking and dragging this little array of dots opens up the taskbar ... Thanks again to everybody, problem solved . |
