So maybe Frances de la Tour?
Wouldn't she be too tall for the TARDIS door?
Or was that just camera trickery in Harry Potter?

Sorry for my usual typos, but when they go to other words it is really too confusing for readers. I meant 'date' not 'fate'

I wondered how the thread was so long alreasy. Then saw the fate of the initial posts.

I care more about the quality of writing and acting than the exact person. Overall, for my tastes, these were poorer after Matt Smith joined, with one or two notable exceptions. The last few episodes of Tennant gave the doctor a vulnerability (and hence character complexity) that has been missing for a while.

Speculating on who might be chosen seems pointless - there are too many options, including lots of people I might not have heard of. But there are some actors who could really make something special of it - John Simm os probably ruled out because he was such a great 'Master' but I am sure he would be a fantastic doctor.   Andrew Scott ("Moriaty") would be another. I think it would be a good idea to have a doctor who was more mercurial which both these actors excelled at.

Maybe it's time for a woman.
The Master managed to reincarnate as 'Missy'.
And the possibility of the Doctor being female was alluded to when Matt Smith was introduced:
"Nose, I've had worse. Chin, blimey. Hair. I'm a girl! No. No. I'm not a girl. And still not ginger! And something else. Something important. I'm, I'm, I'm Crashing!"

And the more things change, the more they stay the same.
Now Peter Capaldi is leaving. Attempting to leave gracefully, but leaving all the same.

"Officially announced(?)"

Meet the new 'Doctor Who,'

Randee Dawn
TODAY contributor 04 August 2013

Who are you? Well, on Sunday, the BBC (and BBC America in the U.S.) let adoring fans of the 50-year-old series "Doctor Who" in on who will play the next incarnation of the traveling Time Lord: Peter Capaldi.

Capaldi will play the 900-plus-year-old 12th Doctor and takes over the role from Matt Smith in an episode that will air on Nov. 23 in the UK.

"Doctor Who belongs to all of us," said Capaldi after the announcement.

Scottish actor Capaldi appeared in both the feature film "In the Loop" and TV series "The Thick of It" as a foul-mouthed political advisor, and was highly touted to be the next in the role.

(Curiously, he most recently appeared in "World War Z" as a character called the "W.H.O. Doctor" — in that case, the World Health Organization medical expert.)

He appeared once in a "Doctor Who" episode, "The Fires of Pompeii," in 2008.

The announcement was made in a live TV show during a special 30-minute program, which played in prime time in the UK and in the afternoon in America, and was filmed before a 400-member studio audience. Also making appearances on stage and in pre-taped interviews were former Doctor Who actors and former traveling companions.

"Veep" and "Thick of It" writer/producer/director Armando Iannucci immediately tweeted his delight:

John

He's The Valeyard! (see my earlier post for link).

The present doctor really made the part his own. I liked him ever since the first one when he desperately needed food and faced with a 9 year old Scottish girl shouted, "You're Scottish aren't you? Fry something!"

I just knew we were in for a good ride.....

I hope they have spotted an unknown talent in a small part role somewhere and thought "Yes, he'll do." The script writers are excellent at developing character and the wonderful ethos of Dr Who is that we do get them regenerating, so refreshing with new actors isn't a fudge, it is part of the experience.

Escapism you can enjoy in your 50s in the same way as you did as an 8 year old is not easy, but the good old Beeb manage it with Dr Who.

My choice? Possibly a little older next time. Possibly a different type of eccentricity as the previous three have been extroverts so silly little things like Tom Baker's handing out jelly babies to aliens or subtle character flaws might be ready for comeback?

The assistants manage to remain glamorous and long may it continue. (I used to fancy Lala Ward, who is now married to Richard Dawkins, who for some inexplicable reason keeps appearing on these threads. Perhaps he could be the doctor? In search of the ultimate answer? Be funny if his final scene was being zapped by an old dude with a long silver beard....

I see in this mornings 'Stun' the headline is that Ms Jackson has tried to commit suicide. If it is true she must have been very unhappy indeed. I wonder how much the pressure that the tabloid press have put on this 15 year old girl went toward fueling this desperation? I hope she comes out of it OK.

More, I would have thought from the promise of the show, the Doctor from a different timeline. Probably the antithesis of the Doctor we know, One who made the choice to hurt rather than help maybe?

That piece in the Stun newspaper about Jackson's daughter was tabloid reporting at it's worse BTW. She is 18 to 1 at the bookies and has, as far as I can tell, as much chance of getting the part as I have :-)

But what do I know!

Cheers

Actually, I am not sure why I am contributing to, or even reading, this thread, as I never actually watch the programme The most exciting thing about it, SFAIAC, has always been all this edge-of-seat suspense about who the next Dr is going to be!!!

I still urge the candidature of Roger Daltrey. Unless maybe Pete Townshend might be persuaded...

I saw it once. The beautiful girl got discouraged and angry at the end and announced that she wanted to leave. The man ignored her completely. Never looked at her, never answered, never acknowledged her as a human. She left. I was told that happens all the time.

I'm not watching that kind of stuff again.

The end of the last show was a bit contradictory, VT - Matt Smith said that he (the John Hurt Character) was everything the Doctor was not - Some sort of alter-ego. But, yes, the credits said he was the Doctor. I suspect it will pan out as the former unless the two 'halves' combine maybe? And a big yes to Eddie Izzard :-)

I was under impression from the ending scene of last show that it would be John Hurt.

I just think the show is a laugh. But I am as inclined to sleep through it as sit on edge of my seat, depending upon many internal and external factors. Most of the fun is making disparaging commentary while watching it. Kind of like Mystery Science Theatre 2000.

If the new Doctor is woman, I'd like Sandra Millican to give it a whack.

Seems somewhat daft to brand Dr. Who racist for only ever incarnating in white form. He's an *alien humanoid from another planet*. Maybe the people of Gallifrey simply don't have a lot of mellanin pigment? Maybe they never needed mellanin as a defence against sun-light, or maybe they've evolved not to need it? As a side thought, have any of the Doctors had even so much as a suntan? They always seem ubiquitously pale-skinned to me. As for referencing boo-boos from the seventies, give us a break, it was the *seventies* ffs, even crap like The B&W Minstrels were considered family entertainment!

DtG I suppose it's unfair to disparage things other people enjoy. To be truthful it's mainly an annoyance at the lack of scifi on TV generally as well as the ubiquity of soap operas and romance!

Someone above mentioned Tom Baker, now there was a Doctor! Weird, powerful and not quite human despite the appearance of being human, far too Other for romance!

I just can't abide these pretty clean-shaven boy-men and the romantic dramas they've imposed upon us as though to appeal to the female audience - as a girl who actually likes science fiction I'd like to tell the Beeb: real girls like real scifi!

I think you would do well not to underrate him

You're bang on the money there, Michael - best we take that as a very serious warning for a future Tory Dystopia that will make The Thatcher Years look like Heaven on Earth.

*

As far as I know it will be John Hurt. Hope this doesn't spoil your fun......

Seems John Hurt was a red herring - one theory has him as the missing Doctor Regeneration between Paul McGann and Christopher Eccleston. Read all about it here, but take some aspirin along:

http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2013/05/23/doctor-who-john-hurt-50th-anniversary-show_n_3324473.html

*

For me the ideal Doctor would be multifaceted character actor David Threlfal - he could regenerate every month or so and still come out more convincing than that last two (I liked Eccleston, but would have preferred June Brown).
