I have just read the sad news elsewhere that Nick Keir formerly of The McCalmans but a great solo artist in his own has just passed away..

"Sad news from Ian McCalman

Good day to you all,
I have been asked to let some of his friends know that, after a period of aggressive cancer, Nick Keir died this morning, Sunday, 2nd June. There is nothing I can say to make anyone feel less sad about losing one of the most caring, witty and talented people I have ever met. You get to know people pretty well when you go "on the road" playing music with them for 30 years and not once in that time did he lose his gentle humour and patience with those around him.
My sympathy goes out, particularly, to his mother, who was so supportive to him in his brilliant career.
I am truly sorry to be the bearer of such bad news.

I'm really sorry to hear this news.
I have followed Nick's career since the early days and have many happy memories of his music and company over the years.

So, so sad to hear this. I think we all hoped and prayed he had got it cracked!

So very sorry to hear this: saw Nick many times with The McCalmans, and several times solo.
He appeared at Balerno Folk Club with Stephen Quigg only a couple of months ago, and was on great form despite his diagnosis.
Remembered for his singing, songwriting, great instrumentalist - guitar, whistle, mandolin - and his sense of humour.

Words fail me, I'm truly sorry to hear this.. Nick was always a great favourite of mine, ever since the early days of being with the Macs when they used to come to my home town once a year, regular as clockwork. I loved listening to him, love his songs, have also had the pleasure of hearing him do solo gigs a few times. It's a very sad thought that he won't ever be around again to play another gig..

Such sad, sad news. Quite apart from being a great musician, singer and songwriter, no-one could make you feel at ease, the way Nick could and did. Will be sorely missed.

Very sad news indeed. I first met Nick in Linlithgow back in the Finn McCuill days. He was a gem of a man.

John Weatherby and I will be doing our tribute to him tonight on FOLKnSTUFF www.aliveradio.net from 9 -11pm. It's also available to listen to again for a further seven days.

So very sad. Bless his heart. I had the lovliest email from him just recently after I'd sent him my review of the last album, which is an absolute treasure. He was so appreciative - I felt very humbled.

What a damned shame.
I saw him with Finn McCuill in a production of Joe's Drum (7:84) in Edinburgh in the late 70s.
A few years later, I slept under his kitchen table (don't ask) in the flat in Clark St.

Caught up with him with the Macs over the years.
My sympathy is with his family and friends and particularly with Ian. First Derek, now Nick. How diabolical!

Funeral/memorial arrangements for Nick, for anyone who should wish to attend:

The Memorial Service for Nick Keir will be held at St Peter's Church, Lutton Place, Edinburgh, EH8 9PE at 12 noon on Monday 10th June, with refreshments following.

Then there will be a session in the Queen's Hall Bar from 2.30 pm - stretching all the way into the evening. Voices and instruments very, very welcome.

I have just heard the sad news on Travelling Folk. My claim to fame as a young teenager was finding out Nick lived in the same street as me and I have always loved his voice! My favourite song of his is The Daybreak Carol. I sang this at my church one Christmas Eve and the words touched hearts! My thoughts and prayers are with Nick's family and musical colleagues at this time.

Det er med sorg, jeg modtog beskeden om Nicks død.
Efter at have fulgt McCalmans i mange år.
Når man træf Nick på Skagen festivalen havde han altid et venligt ord
og var virkelig imødekommende.
Vi vil savne dig.
