Subject: gospel from Getaway
From: Dani
Date: 08 Nov 99 - 08:32 AM

One of the FSGW people at the Getaway was Ken (regretfully, I forget his last name) who sang spirituals, work songs, shantys with an unforgettable voice and style. I wish I'd caught up with him that weekend, but wasn't able to. One song in particular I'd like very much to learn, so I'm hoping that someone either was AT the Gospel Workshop and remembers the song, or can put me in touch with him.

It was sung to a tune that I'd used earlier in the workshop, before many people had arrived. But the lyrics were different, it used the metaphor of sailing the ocean, or crossing the river, and I can't remember much more.

Can you help?

I wasn't there, but the song doesn't go:
"I will not lie me down
This rain a-raging
I will not lie me down
In such a storm
And if this night be unblessed
I shall not take my rest
Until we reach the other shore"
does it?

No, but that's ANOTHER I'd like very much to learn. Thanks, Jeri.

I found what I was looking for - thank you Karen K!

Subject: ADD: I'm Gonna Sail Like a Ship on the Ocean^^
From: Dani
Date: 08 Nov 99 - 08:37 PM

Yeesh, Dick. What was I thinking!?

Karen K is temporarily calling it, "I'm Gonna Sail", she transcribed it from tape. This is truly a case of losing something in the translation. Wish I could recreate his singing on this...
I'm gonna sail like a ship all on that ocean
I'm gonna sail like a ship all on that ocean
I'm gonna sail like a ship all on that ocean
Um, um, um, um, um, um, all on that ocean.

And I'm gonna sail until my sailing days is over (3x)
Um, um, um, um, um, um, my days is over.

And I'm gonna sail until I sail on up to glory (3x)
Um, um, um, um, um, um, on up to glory.

And I'm gonna sail until I see my dear old mother (3x)
Um, um, um, um, um, um, my dear old mother.

And I'm gonna sail until I meet with my father (3x)
Um, um, um, um, um, um, meet with my father.

repeat 1st verse

I am a technical idiot -I can't even type it pretty like Karen did. How can I tell you what the heck the tune is? Almost identical to Ken's. Call me and I'll sing it for you.

The lyrics I know (and sang at the workshop) are:

AIN'T THAT GOOD NEWS

I got a robe in that kingdom - ain't that good news?
I got a robe in that kingdom - ain't that good news?
I'm gonna lay down this world
I'm gonna shoulder up my cross
I'm gonna carry it home to my Jesus -
ain't that good news, my Lord, ain't that good news?

I got shoes in that kingdom - ain't that good news?
I got shoes in that kingdom - ain't that good news?
I'm gonna lay down this world
I'm gonna shoulder up my cross
I'm gonna carry it home to my Jesus -
ain't that good news, my Lord, ain't that good news?

I got a crown in that kingdom - ain't that good news?
I got a crown in that kingdom - ain't that good news?
I'm gonna lay down this world
I'm gonna shoulder up my cross
I'm gonna carry it home to my Jesus -
ain't that good news, my Lord, ain't that good news?^^

Learned it from listening to Sweet Honey in the Rock. It's one of those songs you can't sing softly, gotta belt it out and let it take you over.

There are a few tunes closely related to this one that I feel the same way about, and I couldn't tell you why they move me, but they do. Anyone have insight into this? Somewhat related to the "Drop Everything" thread. Why do certain types of music reach way inside you? And others not?

Well, it's called "I'm Gonna Sail Like a Ship on the Ocean," recorded by Henry Morrison & St. Simon's Island Singers. It's on a 4-CD box set called "Sounds of the South" on the Atlantic label. I've been resisting buying the set because it's expensive.

No, but now I know that Ken shows up here once in a while, let's ask him! I heard him do even more terrific stuff last year, and hope he'll be there THIS year!

And Joe, I felt that way about the companion CD's for PBS's WADE IN THE WATER series, and lo! One day I was at the Smithsonian and they were on the clearance table!!! Worth every penny, once I heard them I realized I should have spent the whole bucks.

Want to split the SOUNDS OF THE SOUTH?

It sounds to me like you're remembering Ken Schatz, who sings with Alison Kelley as a duo, the NexTradition.. I include the link so you can find out about their performing schedule and available CD.

Saw Ken in June in Maine and he said that he and Alison might be in Holland or someplace over there in Oct. and he didn't know if he would make it this year. I sure hope he does though.
