I'm looking for the lyrics to a song last heard many years ago. It was called "Calder Rivers" (???) and performed by a lady of the same name. Can anyone help please? Thanks.

Thanks guys but I think Kathryn Calder's recording of "Down the River" is bit recent ... in fact I don't even think Kathryn had been born when the song about Calder River(s) was sung at a wmc "many years ago" (probably back in the '70s)!!!

Any other ideas?

Sorry, no more details. My friend (who has no internet!) heard the song at a working man's club in the Midlands about 30 or 40 years ago. All he can remember is that the song was called "Calder Rivers" and was sung by a lady of the same name.

Here's a link to an archived article (bottom of page, entitled Thunder Road) from 2003 in Live on Stage Listings Magazine, which appears to be Hull based. It refers to "Dori Moore, better known to some as country singer Calder Rivers."

Calder

I couldn't find anything else about Dori Moore or Calder Rivers, I'm afraid.

Hope it helps!

Just to state the obvious to a Yorkshireman, we have the River Calder, starting around Todmorden and flowing through Wakefield until it combines with the Aire which in turn joins the Humber which flows into the North Sea.
This is probably a load of useless information for the guest who posted this thread.

Subject: Lyr Add: CALDER BRAES (Lewis)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 14 Jun 13 - 07:44 PM

Probably not the song that was wanted, but not to be ignored:

From The Musical Cyclopedia: Being a Collection of the Most Approved English, Scottish, and Irish Songs... by James W. Wilson (London: Parry & Co., 1852), page 84:

CALDER BRAES.
Lewis.

1. When cares were few, and life was young,
On Calder's braes I danced and sung,
Unpained by keen remorse's dart,
Joy flow'd spontaneous from my heart:
To crown the happy, mundane scene,
I loved—nor did I love in vain,
The theme of all my artless lays,
Was my dear lass of Calder braes.

2. Thrice happy days, your loss I mourn,
You're gone—ah! "never to return;"
Ambition's ignis fatuus' glare
Transform'd my bliss to black despair.
The pomp of war, and pride of arms,
Appear'd with such resistless charms,
I left (to face my country's faes)
My weeping maid on Calder braes.

3. In martial conflict first I shone,
In climes below the burning zone;
Beneath Seringapatam's wall,
I saw the tyrant sultan's fall;
Amidst the carnage of the day,
Where dead and dying round me lay,
'Midst cannons' roar, and lightnings' blaze,
I thought on peaceful Calder braes.

4. With laurels crown'd, with wealth array'd,
Again I sought my native shade,
In hopes my long-lost love to meet,
To lay my laurels at her feet;
Alas! I never saw her more,
My sanguine dreams of bliss are o'er,
My only pleasure's now to gaze
On her loved grave on Calder braes.

There is a Scottish song called BONNY (or BONNIE) WOODHALL (or WOODHA' or WOOD GREEN) which begins:

"Down by yon green bushes near Calder's clear stream"

There are several versions in this thread:

Lyr Add: Bonny Woodhall/Bonny Wood Green

I believe that there are at least four Calder Rivers in northern England. The one that I know best flows through the village of Whalley in Lancashire - where I was born. There is at least one poem written about this River Calder. It is "Calder River" by Josiah Hurstwood and was written c.1825. It begins:

By Calder's dew-pearled marge I wandered
Through ferns and meadows all alone,
To Calder's song my heart surrendered,
That heart afore was hard as stone.

Now all I need to do is find out what 'Calder' means
Australia
Calder River (Tasmania), a tributary of Inglis River
Calder River (Victoria)
Calder River (Western Australia) in the Kimberley region

United Kingdom
River Calder, West Yorkshire, a major tributary of the River Aire
River Calder, Cumbria, flows into the Irish Sea near Sellafield
River Calder, Lancashire, a major tributary of the River Ribble
River Calder, Wyre, Lancashire, a tributary of the River Wyre
River Calder, Highland, a tributary of the River Spey
River Calder, Renfrewshire near Lochwinnoch
Tributaries of the River Clyde: Rotten Calder, near East Kilbride
North Calder Water, from the Black Loch to Daldowie
South Calder Water, near Wishaw
Calder Water, near Strathaven, a tributary of the Avon Water

Calder, so I'm told, comes from the Old Celtic and means "violent stream" ("caled + dufr" which can be translated as "hard, violent" and "stream". Later Scottish names probably come from the Gaelic "dobhar", which means "stream".

Thanks. 'Violent stream' certainly describes the Yorkshire Calder when it's in spate.

You must be proud of your Grandmother and presume it is the West Yorkshire Calder that inspired both her name and the song.
I for one would be interested in obtaining a copy of the CD.
How would I go about purchasing one please.

Thanks Calder for your goodwill gesture of sending me your CD, there are many songs on it that I love.
Apart from "My Name is Calder Rivers" I particularly like "I picked a fine time to leave you" another song you wrote yourself.
I am glad to hear that your voice is still good, although sad that you are not performing as often as you did.

I enclose below the words of your song which you have permitted me to quote (as you have Copyright) for the use of the original Guest who posted this thread. I hope they will like it as much as me.

MY NAME IS CALDER RIVERS
(Calder Rivers)

In a little town in Yorkshire, where the River Calder flows
My Mamma named me Calder, because I was a Yorkshire Rose
She begged me not to grow up, and marry the cheating kind
I do think Yorkshire gentlemen is what she had in mind

For I met you down in Nashville, and I loved you from the start
I should have listened to mamma, because you had a cheating heart
My name is Calder Rivers, and all day long I cried
I never ever leave you, until the day I die

My Yorkshire heart is broken, and my mind is hear with you
You wouldn't find another girl, who loves you like I do
For when my life is over, and you've lost your English rose
Take my body back to Yorkshire, where the River Calder flows

My Yorkshire heart is broken, and my mind is hear with you
You wouldn't find another girl, who loves you like I do
For when my life is over, and you've lost your English Rose
Take my body back to Yorkshire, where the River Calder flows
Take my body back to Yorkshire, where the River Calder flows

Thanks again Calder, look forward to hearing you sing in person sometime.

I am looking to purchase/obtain a copy of 'CALDER RIVERS' recording of 'In a little town in Yorkshire, where the River Calder flows' not sure of the correct name, your site appears to be the only one that has heard of her.

I would be very grateful if you could advise me where I could obtain one.

Interesting that the source of both the Lancashire and West Yorkshire Calders is at the same place - the top of the pass / watershed between Burnley and Todmorden. They start as small unnamed streams, but if you look on the OS map, both are identified as "River Calder" within a mile or so.

I wonder if at one time they were thought of as one river. It is after all in the Cliviger Gorge, which before the Industrial Revolution was considered to be a wild and lonely place, haunted by boggarts and hobgoblins, where travellers used to hurry through as quickly as possible.
