Subject: Lyr Req: 'Chanteyman Who's Never Gone to Sea' From: GUEST,kjwcpm Date: 10 Jun 13 - 07:56 AM Yesterday at the 34th Annual Sea Music Festival, Marc Bernier did a fine rendition of "Chanteyman Who's Never Gone To Sea". I'm wondering if anyone here has collected a version of the tune, as I can't find it anywhere online and would love to add this one to my own collection. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: 'Chanteyman Who's Never Gone to Sea' From: Jeri Date: 10 Jun 13 - 08:18 AM I believe member Micca wrote this. Point of clarification: are you looking for the tune, the lyrics or the whole song? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: 'Chanteyman Who's Never Gone to Sea' From: GUEST,henryp Date: 10 Jun 13 - 08:42 AM I'm a shanty man that's never been to sea Words Micca Patterson Tune Mary Ellen Carter, Stan Rogers (Tweaked a bit) I'M A SHANTY MAN THAT'S NEVER BEEN TO SEA (Micca Patterson) My beard is white and grizzled I've a seaman's jumper on My eyes are sharp and wrinkled Like from winds around Cape Horn Except I've never seen them And I wont, sure as your born I'm a shanty man that's never been to sea I know each knot and sheet and rope Can tell you all their names I can sing for hours and hours and hours About sailors shore side games And how they answered loudly To "lay aft and give your names" I'm a shanty man that's never been to sea Been to sea, been to sea There's no place on the lumpy ocean For the likes of me I stick to Terra firma That's the safest place for me I'm a shanty man that's never been to sea I know about Norwegian steam And Swedish outboards too Pea soup and Irish pennants And the dreaded Lobscouse stew But I'll do my sailing in the pub If its all the same to you I'm a shanty man that's never been to sea I'll show you the right rhythm For to holystone and scrub And I'll battle gales and hurricanes while anchored in the pub or with my finger in my ear in your local folk club I'm a shanty man that's never been to sea Been to sea, been to sea There's no place on the lumpy ocean For the likes of me I stick to Terra firma That's the safest place for me I'm a shanty man that's never been to sea I take a short haul shanty and I'll sing it, as I do at a speed and awkward tempo that would make a wreck of you tho' it makes a pleasing Harmony It's not meant for working to I'm a shanty man that's never been to sea And when I sing a shanty with a chorus at my back A stamping with my old sea boot to keep them on the track I give each line a little whoop To help take in the slack I'm a shanty man that's never been to sea Been to sea, been to sea There's no place on the lumpy ocean For the likes of me I stick to Terra firma That's the safest place for me I'm a shanty man that's never been to sea And I have my own Dorfflenger And Stan Hugill on the shelf Such rich and varied pickings And a hoard of hidden wealth And lots of old recordings that I'm keeping to myself I'm a shanty man that's never been to sea There are some fine shanty singers That I hope wont get the hump At my mixing them with phonies In this one amorphous lump But the others, they are only good at the Portuguese hand pump They're shanty men that's never been to sea Been to sea, been to sea Theres no place on the lumpy ocean For the likes of me I stick to Terra firma That's the safest place for me I'm a shanty man that's never been to sea So come into to the public bar Drink beer instead of tea And join in the loud choruses With my sweatered mates and me We'll be driving lee rails under (whatever that might be) And be a shantyman that's never been to sea Been to sea, been to sea Theres no place on the lumpy ocean For the likes of me I stick to Terra firma That's the safest place for me I'm a shanty man that's never been to sea © Micca Patterson 9-1-2005 |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: 'Chanteyman Who's Never Gone to Sea' From: Bat Goddess Date: 10 Jun 13 - 09:20 AM I wasn't at Mystic, but I'll wager a guess it was Marc Bernier who sang this. He was quite taken with the song back in 2006 (I think) when Micca sang it at the Portland, Maine Sea Music Festival. Linn |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: 'Chanteyman Who's Never Gone to Sea' From: ChanteyLass Date: 10 Jun 13 - 09:47 PM Yes, Marc did do a great job. The audience loved it. And he did credit Micca with writing it. It's good to see the lyrics here. I enjoyed hearing the song, but it's nice to read the words at my own pace. |

Subject: RE: ADD: Chanteyman Who's Never Gone to Sea (Micca) From: GUEST,henryp Date: 12 Jun 13 - 12:10 AM And there's more; Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I'm a Shanty Man That's Never Been to Sea From: Micca Date: 14 Dec 10 - 04:32 AM There is a half verse missing!!!! " So put on your Black Ball cheeser and your canvas jacket blue and we'll roll right down to Rio by way of Timbucktoo but only in our dreams, of course we have better things to do like being Shanty men whov'e never been to sea" Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I'm a Shanty Man That's Never Been to From: Charley Noble Date: 14 Dec 10 - 08:19 AM Micca- Where does that missing half verse fit in? Is it before the last chorus? Cheerily, Charley Noble Subject: RE: Lyr Req: I'm a Shanty Man That's Never Been to Sea From: Micca Date: 14 Dec 10 - 10:00 AM Yes Charlie, right before the last chorus, after thr "beer instead of tea" and FWIW it was not a keyboard slip that left it out, it was actually written some time after the rest of the song was completed and I noticed we were 1/2 a verse short!!! |
Subject: RE: ADD: Chanteyman Who's Never Gone to Sea (Micca) From: GUEST,henryp Date: 12 Jun 13 - 03:51 AM The tune comes from Mary Ellen Carter, perhaps the best known of all Stan Rogers' songs. Thirty years ago this month Stan died, helping passengers from a burning aircraft. I'd just like to mark this moment and remember Stan. As long as we sing his songs, his music lives on. |
Subject: RE: ADD: Chanteyman Who's Never Gone to Sea (Micca) From: Marc Bernier Date: 12 Jun 13 - 04:06 PM Fair enough! I wasn't trying to challenge you. I'd just never seen his stuff posted so wasn't sure how he felt. |
Subject: RE: ADD: Chanteyman Who's Never Gone to Sea (Micca) From: Jeri Date: 12 Jun 13 - 05:48 PM Guest, henryp, Stan didn't regain consciousness, didn't help anyone off the plane. If you have proof, not "somebody told me", please start another thread and share it with the rest of the world. He has done enough otherwise that stories don't need to be made up about him. Micca's song, other than the tune, has nothing at all to do with Stan. It's a wonderful song, Micca! |
Subject: RE: ADD: Chanteyman Who's Never Gone to Sea (Micca) From: GUEST,henryp Date: 12 Jun 13 - 08:37 PM "Micca's song, other than the tune, has nothing at all to do with Stan" Stan wrote the tune - isn't that half of the song? Doesn't he deserve an acknowledgement? "Stan didn't regain consciousness, didn't help anyone off the plane" Everybody on the plane survived the landing. They were leaving the plane when a flashover occurred, killing the 23 passengers still on board. Nathan Rogers, Stan's son, wrote; "No, sir, the story is not beautiful (I agree) and those who survived were not in the plane when the critical flashover occurred. Moments before this, who knows for sure? Here are the facts: Stan was found about 6 feet from the front right door, face down, pointed toward the back of the airplane. It is not illogical to conclude that he may have been turning around to continue his search for survivors still trapped in the plane. It is one of the few small condolences I have." I didn't mean to be controversial. I'm happy to amend what I wrote; Thirty years ago this month Stan died, in a way that would be explained if he was helping passengers from a burning aircraft. And since no one inside the plane survived the flashover, there isn't any evidence to say that he wasn't trying to helping someone off the plane. Stan was on a flight back to Toronto on the day I took off from Toronto to fly home. He is in my thoughts at this time. I regret his death very much but am grateful for what he achieved in his life. |

Subject: RE: ADD: Chanteyman Who's Never Gone to Sea (Micca) From: Joe Offer Date: 14 Jun 13 - 04:58 AM I hate to admit this, but this song may well be an indication that Micca might be what one could refer to as "brilliant." It is a damn good song, Micca. It really is. And on top of that, you're a damn nice person. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: ADD: Chanteyman Who's Never Gone to Sea (Micca) From: Jeri Date: 14 Jun 13 - 06:25 AM Henryp, thanks. Joe, this "brilliant" "nice" person you're talkin' about is Micca, right? I don't disagree, although I'm not planning on treating him with kid gloves. The medical ones would be sufficient. Possibly a Hazmat suit. In any case, this song's definitely a keeper. |
Subject: RE: ADD: Chanteyman Who's Never Gone to Sea (Micca) From: GUEST,Wee Jock Date: 14 Jun 13 - 07:16 AM As a member of Folk Duo Border Crossing, based in Rochester Kent U.K we are always looking for new songs to sing, and i would like to thank Guest KJWCPM, for bringing the song to my attention, and also to Guest Henry for the words, and last but certainly not least the very talented Micca Patterson for writing such a great song, As a singer of shanties, like the majority of shanty singers, have never been to sea, (I get sea sick when having a bath and was also sick on the Isle of Wight Ferry when we went there on holiday one year) and as my singing partner said when he saw the song, John the first two lines definitely are you. Micca i hope that you have written some more songs, and if you have can we obtain the words and tunes from yourself? Cheers to all Wee Jock (John S. Matthews) |
Subject: RE: ADD: Chanteyman Who's Never Gone to Sea (Micca) From: GUEST,henryp Date: 14 Jun 13 - 12:24 PM It is an excellent song! Bob Watson lamented the passing of the working shantymen in his song Shantyman - you can find the words on DT and a recording on youtube. New sea songs continue to emerge. The best that I've heard recently was written by Jim Hancock of the English (Yorkshire/Lincolnshire) group The Roaring Forties. It's got a grainy, authentic feel and a refrain; You wouldn't send a dog to sea on a night like this. I can't find it on the internet, but you'll recognise it when you hear it! |
Subject: RE: ADD: Chanteyman Who's Never Gone to Sea (Micca) From: Bill D Date: 15 Jun 13 - 10:44 AM Micca has another song...not a humerous one.... about a trip he was on to the the Antarctic many years ago(to service the whaling fleet)?? that everyone ought to hear. You about, Micca? Are there recordings? |
Subject: RE: ADD: Chanteyman Who's Never Gone to Sea (Micca) From: Charley Noble Date: 15 Jun 13 - 10:50 AM It's a fine song, tongue in cheek but with a little bite, composed by Micca who has spent years at sea in the Royal Navy. Cheerily, Charley Noble, from his armchair |

Subject: RE: ADD: Chanteyman Who's Never Gone to Sea (Micca) From: Marc Bernier Date: 15 Jun 13 - 01:31 PM Micca! Thank you so much for giving me the words to that brilliant song, those many years ago. I don't do it often, because most audiences just don't understand, But when I do there is always a reaction. I think I enjoy it most when folks find it offensive. |

Subject: RE: ADD: Chanteyman Who's Never Gone to Sea (Micca) From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 10 Aug 13 - 10:41 AM This set me thinking of another song that in a way treats the same idea, from a completely different angle, the way you might get in Song Challenge. By the incomparable Graeme Miles, who died earlier this year,, My El Dorado: I had my hopes as we all had hopes For what I'd be and what I'd do But as my youth soon bloomed and faded So all my dreams they vanished too I never found my Eldorado I never walked down silver sands I never saw those gold pagodas Nor held a sunrise in my hand But I just dreamed and dreamed a dream I just dreamed and dreamed a dream I was just a kid just a scruffy kid But I held the world in my grubby hands But then the world just turned to water Ran through my fingers into the sand The terraced streets were my playground canyons The shipyard cranes were my redwood trees The steel yard tips were my mountain ranges And the brick yard ponds were my seven seas The public bar was full of sailors They laughed and sang and told their tales But I just felt as black as coal Put down my glass and walked away.< |
