Subject: Lyr Req: Sacajeedle, sacajeedle and solanya From: GUEST Date: 11 Jun 13 - 12:53 AM My mother (born in England in 1906) learned a "nonsense song" from her father, who was 22 years in the Royal Navy, and used to sing it to me. All I remember now are a few bits: "Shoodle like a cataract, shoodle go around" and "Coarse cut a bunion" (!!) and the last line "Sacajeedle, sacajeedle and solanya." Of course, it could well have been a folk song in another language-- anything from Hindi to Yiddish to Portuguese-- that was assumed by the English to be "nonsense words". (For example, "coarse cut a..." might have originally been "Corsica". Maybe the song was about Napoleon.) Any suggestions? Jane Elderfield |
