I have a Victor 78 rpm of the Tin Gee Gee sung by Henry Price. The last patent date on the label was 1908. I believe that's about when it was given to my mother when she was a child. We used to play it all the time on my grandfather's Victrola in the 1940's. We used a cactus needle to prevent damage but it's scratchy and obviously much used so you need to have the lyrics to make out all the words. I would love to donate the record to any organization that would like it. And a friend made a CD recording of it that I think I can make into a file that I'd be happy to send to anyone interested.

Thanks Mudcat! I have known the tune for many, many years ( I think it is also known as the seven beat polka for reasons unknown) I never realised it was a music hall type song! ( and had words!)

I have sung it many times in Cabaret for Southampton Operatic Society -and have just sung it with Trinity Music Society in Chelmsford, last week.

The Chelmsford version might have been recorded, I'm not sure. One of the Southampton versions will be on a DVD of our cabaret after our performance of HMS Pinafore at the International G&S Festival in Buxton in 2001. You won't be able to get that version as the cabarets were not released to the public on the videos/DVDs that they sold. I'm not sure if I can get it copied - but if you email me we can discuss. There are several instrumental recordings, but I haven't found a vocal version yet and I have to go out now. The original recording was on Victor: Victor discog - Tin Gee Gee. I did find a recording of ?Pretty Little Polly on a Tin Gee Gee? but I don't think that's the same song.

Thank you Billy Weeks. Yes I remember my Grandma singing it to us. She was a great fan of music hall songs, and sang loads of them but I particularly remember this one! there seem to be some original recordings around of other music hall songs, but none of this one. Would be great to get a copy of the George Withers one as above at least. There don't seem to be any of the originals for Tin Gee Gee, mind you I don't know how they got recordings of any of them?? The poster says that Fanny Wentworth sung it, and she sounds an interesting character too!

The song is by Fred Cape and it was first sung by Mel B Spurr, published in 1901. Not of much immediate help, Sue, but may be useful if you want to find the sheet music. This was a favourite of my father's, who must have heard it about the time it was first sung. I say 'heard' because he had obviously never seen it in print. The line 'I am a colonel in a little cocked hat' he sang as 'I knock a colonel into a contact' , which shows how easily songs can change (even into something meaningless!) in oral transmission.

I am trying to find a vocal recording of Tin Gee Gee also known as the Lowther Arcade, but cannot find it available either to buy or online. Have only found an instrumental one! Any suggestions??
