Just got my computer back from the shop, with a new hard drive.

They reinstalled Windows 7, but I find I don't have, as I used to, a "Recycle" icon on the desktop.

How do I find that, so that I can do a Desktop shortcut?

Find the recycle bin in Windows Explorer.

Click and drag the folder to the desktop and drop it there.

(The icon will be a "copy" of the folder that's in Win Explorer.)

Alternate: The "formal" method is to right click on the Recycle folder in Win Explorer and select "Send To" Desktop, but some of the "system" folders don't show that option.

If you have lots of icons on the desktop, you can also drag-and-drop an icon onto the "Quick Start" bar at the bottom (Next to the Start Button) to get a "mini icon" there. Useful to keep a few of the ones you use frequently where they're easier to find; but it ceases being helpful if you try to put too many down there.

I can find mine with "Windows Explorer" on my desktop. It might just be your icon is gone? It's a system folder, so it should exist somewhere.

Just to reveal the depth of my ignorance or incompetence, where
do I find Windows Explorer?    It's not on the desktop, and not
in the bar at the bottom of the screen. I haven't found it in
the displays called up by the start button, either.

Enlighten me, please.

Go to "Start" (click big button on bottom left)
Hold mouse/cursor over "All Programs" until it expands
Click on the little yellow "Accessories" folder
"Windows Explorer" will be there

If all other programs are closed so all you see is in the lower left where you've been clicking--
click on "Windows Explorer" and hold your mouse button down, then drag it to your desktop. This doesn't move the file, but puts a shortcut on your desktop.

I use WinEx all the time to look for things, so I just dragged it to the task bar that stretches across the bottom of the screen.

Right click on the desktop and select personalize.

Click "change desktop icons" in column on left

Put check beside icons you want

Click "apply"
