Subject: 'Brownie' McNeil - Norman Laird McNeil
From: Thomas Stern
Date: 23 Jun 13 - 03:20 PM

Brownie McNeil taught at a number of Texas colleges, was a collector
or Southwest folklore, made a significant collection of CORREDOS,
and sang. Active in the Texas Folk-Lore Society (President for a number of years in the 1940's), and contributor to their publications.
His field recordings are at the Library of Congress and the University
of Texas.

I am aware of 3 albums by McNeil:
1950 SONIC                            78rpm BALLADS
1957 SONIC                            LP    FOLKSONGS
1973 Ex-Students Univ of Texas LP    SONGS OF THE CHISHOLM TRAIL

Does anyone:
have recollections of him?
biographical information?
know of any other recordings of him?

Thanks!
Best wishes, Thomas.

Undoubtedly you've already seen this, but there is a bio sketch on pp 152-154 of Ray M Lawless, Folksingers and Folksongs in America (NY: Duell, Sloan & Pearce, 1960, 1965). I think pagination is the same in both editions but only have the 2nd, 1965, at hand right now.

Email me at patty@frii.com and I can give you further information on Brownie. I did not see this when it was posted, otherwise I would have answered sooner.
