I like the idea of just buying one..really, any pretty (or not) dress will do, if it has some alterations etc...trying to make a complicated dress at the last minute could be stressful for all...relax, finish the dress later for goth events...seems a vegan cake shouldn't be that hard for a baker to come up with..oh gluten free too...I have had some nice cookies made with garbanzo bean flour...rice flour is gluten free is it not? Something will happen. Main thing is to relax and enjoy the wedding.

The thing is the original designer and would be dressmaker (was doing it for free as a gift), had to move to Sweden and has only just had her baby. So she is really going to be unavailable just now.

All that is needed is the instructions for putting together the pieces, which maybe difficult to do without instrux as she designed the thing. Corset and bustle skirt respectively.

Ele has found a dressmaker in Swansea Market and she has stated that she needs the instructions. So this indicates to me that it must be a complicated design.

Right now Ele appears to be more fussed about where to get the second cake which has to be vegan, gluten free and not chocolate. But at last look on facebook it looks like she has sorted a baker who can do this. Orange polenta cake I think.

She is moving house this weekend. In London this week giving a presentation for work. So really under the gun.

Here are some well-thought-out ideas about hiring a dressmaker. (I've known the author on Usenet forums for years, she really knows what she's talking about).

How to get the best from your dressmaker

What does the contract say about this situation?

You do have one?

I'm just sorry I am too far away.

I learned to make things from scratch, like my grandmothers did. To have something already cut out ought to be a doddle.

How about contacting the local news papers and asking if they will put out a plea for help - there might be some retired person with the required skills who would do a one off.

I knew a dress maker who often had people shrieking at her to get their dresses made months or weeks in advance, and when she gave in they were then coming back to have them altered at the last minute as all the stress, or the advancing pregnancy had caused their shape and size to alter.

She preferred to work on the dresses just once, just before they were needed - so there is still hope if you can find the right person.

Ele has passed the project on to a dressmaker in the Swansea Market. But they need the instructions.   I thought Ele already had them. Turns out the designer (now moved to Sweden) has them and is not responding to Ele's emails. It may be she has entered her confinement :\

Looks like Ele is just going to have to buy something off the peg.

Ahh well. This was not run of the mill wedding gown. It was to serve as steampunk and goth scene outfit too, so I suppose she won't be too fussed about not having the dress a girl dreams of for her wedding. Ele is more pragmmatic than romantic.

While I can't recommend any specific dressmaker there are now a few shops for alterations and dressmaking in Swansea Market.

The work I have seen while passing by their shops looks very proficient

Good Luck

@ Jack - Apparently not or she would have suggested someone.

@ Sian - Thank you. I have passed along your advice.

Check with the Swansea Grand Theatre or theatre unions. My sister was a Wardrobe Head in a Sept to May theatre and was always taking on wedding jobs. You could ask at the BBC in Cardiff too.

Can't the original designer recommend somebody she'd trust to complete her work?

Thanks Maeve. She is checking local wedding shops. But it is summer (bride season in the UK) and she really wants recommendation as some seamstresses can really bodge a dress, especially if it was designed by another dressmaker.

I know not the place for this but we are desparate. Step daughter in Swansea getting married in 3 weeks. Her dress has been designed and fabric cut to pattern. However the designer/seamstress has had unavoidable personal problem which caused her to back out of completing the commission.

I am looking for recommendations of seamstress in Swansea or at a stretch Cardiff (as step daughter does not drive). Please network with friends in Wales to help me find a good dress maker.

Step daughter is also seeking advice from friends and will check with AmDram and univerity theatre depatment for potential costumers. But the poor kid is arranging this wedding as well as trying to close on first house purchase (this week) and still work full time.

Thanks in advance for your help.
