Just for what it is worth!

The World Wildlife Fund had to change its acronym because some tosspot wrestling organisation in the good old U S of A had already used it.

But then the Americans have the World Series of a sport that only takes place in about two other places in the world and then not very seriously.

There is nothing wrong with using a pre-empted acronynm if it is the most suitable one. I don't think the Irish Traditional Music Archive (or the whole of 'Hibernia' for that matter) gets all that uptight when it's pointed out that their acronym has been pre-empted in the UK. You're right to say they can't have it both ways but wrong to assume they want it both ways. I think they're happy enough with their acronym. UKers are free to pass remarks about it, but don't get uptight if the reaction is 'so bloody what'.

Why on earth would the Irish Traditional Music Archive avoid using the acronym ITMA? It's of no concern to them that the acronym means something else in the UK. The National Sheep Association must be livid with the Americans.

Your belittling "some" is an unworthy attempt at a get-out; and a self-denunciation of the ROI as a sort of self-satisfiedly inward-looking provincial backwater. Which it isn't, and I doubt if your countrymen would thank you for trying to make it appear so.

Just a bit of research would have obviated this silliness and tediousness and annoyance on your part, wouldn't it? Acronyms are notoriously dodgy ground, and should always be checked for incongruous or unfortunate precedents.

It is possibly more tiresome when intelligent persons insist that internation organisations check if the acronym of the organisation's chosen name would send some British persons into a fit of schoolboy giggles.


I don't think the Irish Traditional Music Archive should worry about some British radio show, why would they?
