Hey Ho, Gentle Colleagues! Doing a workshop for 4 y.o.s with their featured color of the week, "GREEN". Any suggestions for appropriate songs for same?

They can have the word GREEN or be ABOUT something green like cabbage, pickles, leaves.

Thanks!

Deborah Robins and Larry Hanks

Wow, a search of the DT brings up a gigantic list! How about:

Green Green Rocky Road

Green Grass Grew All Around

It's Not Easy Being Green

If you need the tunes,, you should be able to find them in youtube.

Pity "Green Onions" is an instrumental ! Second that came to mind was "Green Green" by New Christy Minstrels (see Youtube).. easily singable chorus but don't let them hear Barry McGuire's vocal.. they might think it's a monster.

The Green grass grew around would work well - a cumulative song (with actions, possibly).

How about the Caterpillar song. To the tune of Coming round the Mountain. With more action. Not sure that I remember the words exactly. But each verse only has 1 line, repeated, and a spoken comment.
There's a tiny caterpillar on a leaf (wriggle, wriggle)
He's eating up the the leaf to make him grow (munch munch)
He spins a silk cocoon to take a sleep (spin, spin) [or something like that....]
Hes turned into a pretty butterfly (flap flap)

Oats and beans and barley grow.
Room for discussion about green shoots that ripen to golden barley etc. And a singing game to go with it (see link)

Little white duck
Yes, I know white isn't green - but there are 2 greens if they listen out for them

3 Little Speckled frogs.

Froggy went a wooing. (or one of the many versions - and one version even has a bit of green spinach -hey ho)

Apples and bananas
They can both be green. And instead of changing the vowels you can ask the children to suggest green food.
e.g.
Cucumber and lettuce
Cabbages and green peas
brocolli and french beans
wibbly, wobbly jelly
cake with bright green icing

When I go by Baltimore
Need no carpet on my floor
Take my hand and come with me
We'll go down by Galilee

We're singin' green green rocky road
Promenade in green
Tell me who d'y'all love
Tell me who d'y'all love

Etc.

Big thanks to Len Chandler!

Green Grow the Rushes O is a fun counting song, but heavy on Biblical/Christian themes.

How about "I'm a Lonely little Petunia In An Onion Patch." The word green never appears but it's a funny song about a flower.

This is a well-known English traditional song.

The Keeper

The Keeper did a-shooting go,
And under his cloak he carried a bow,
All for to shoot at a merry little doe
Among the leaves so green-o.

Chorus
(group one) - (group two)
Jackie Boy! - Master!
Sing ye well! - Very well!
Derry derry down, (groups 1&2) Among the leaves so green-o
To my hey down down, - To my ho down, down,
Hey down --- Ho down,
Derry down, (groups 1&2) Among the leaves so green-o.

The first doe he shot at he missed,
The second doe he trimmed he kissed,
The third doe went where nobody wist
Among the leaves so green-o.

Chorus

The fourth doe she did cross the plain;
The Keeper fetched her back again.
Where she is now she may remain
Among the leaves so green-o.

Chorus

The fifth doe she did cross the brook;
The Keeper fetched her back with his crook.
Where she is now you must go and look
Among the leaves so green-o.

Chorus

My daughter is surprised that no-one has thought of
10 green bottles
(a favourite picture book when I ran a preschool was a version of this - ten green monsters)

Here's another one (though perhaps it might be a bit too long and complicated for pre-school chidren as might be the case for 'The Keeper' given above)

In a wood there grew a tree,
The best tree you ever did see,
And the green leaves grew
all around, all around,
And the green leaves grew all around.

And on this tree there was a branch,
The best branch you ever did see,
The branch was on the tree,
The tree was in the wood,
And the green leaves grew
all around, all around,
And the green leaves grew all around.

And on this branch there was a nest,
The best nest you ever did see,
The nest was on the branch,
The branch was on the tree,
The tree was in the wood,
And the green leaves grew
all around, all around,
And the green leaves grew all around.

And in this nest there was an egg,
The best egg you ever did see,
The egg was in the nest,
The nest was on the branch,
The branch was on the tree,
The tree was in the wood,
And the green leaves grew
all around, all around,
And the green leaves grew all around.

And in this egg there was a yolk,
The best yolk you ever did see,
The yolk was in the egg,
The egg was in the nest,
The nest was on the branch,
The branch was on the tree,
The tree was in the wood,
And the green leaves grew
all around, all around,
And the green leaves grew all around.

And in this yolk there was a bird,
The best bird you ever did see,
The bird was in the yolk,
The yolk was in the egg,
The egg was in the nest,
The nest was on the branch,
The branch was on the tree,
The tree was in the wood,
And the green leaves grew
all around, all around,
And the green leaves grew all around.

And on this bird there was a feather
The best feather you ever did see,
The feather was on the bird,
The bird was in the yolk,
The yolk was in the egg,
The egg was in the nest,
The nest was on the branch,
The branch was on the tree,
The tree was in the wood,
And the green leaves grew
all around, all around,
And the green leaves grew all around.

Concerning 'Ten Green Bottles'- here (in Europe) we sing - Ten Green Bottles standing on the wall, but aparently the American version is - Ten Green Bottles hanging on a wall. Am I right in thinking that?

Not the colour but -

I know a lady named Mrs Green,
Airy, airy I do,
I know a woman named Mrs Green,
Down by the greenwood side O

She had two babies long and small,
She didn't like them, not at all.

She stuck a penknife in their hearts
She stuck a penknife in their hearts

The policemen came the very next day
And took poor Mrs Green away.

They took her in the Black Maria
And tied her up with old barbed wire.

They hanged her from the cherry tree,
And that was the end of Mrs Green.

The moral of this story is,
Don't stick knives in baby's heads.

Then of course there's always the one that begins:
"Green is the colour of my true-love's teeth."

Sorry if this has been less than helpful - couldn't resist.,
Jim Carroll

If you can get puppets or cut out pictures of the animals, you can do the "Unicorn".   "There were green alligators..."      I've done it for 2 and 3 year olds. Big hit.   Though they do try to take the puppets off your hand.

Yup.

We're lucky in that we have a poster of a painting (by my great grandfather) over the fireplace mantel.   He specialized in nymphs and melancholy landscapes.   Often with unicorns--evidently for the symbolism.    So I just pointed at the poster for that.
