Hughie Jones was seen enjoying the great weather and the music at the North Wales Bluegrass festival in Conwy last weekend. Good for him!

Still have my membership card for Gregsons Well (Member No.2)
Now a long way from there but met Highie at Broadstairs a few years ago. As good as ever.

Wish I could be there - the Spinners were my first experience of folk music.

LEGENDARY MEMBERS OF "THE SPINNERS" AT THE HUNGRY HORSE FOLK CLUB - Thursday 11th July

Like many of my contemporaries in 1960's Britain I grew up listening to the music of four young men from Liverpool who became household names all over the world. However, in this instance, it is not The Beatles I speak of but an equally "fab four" in folk music terms, THE SPINNERS.
Myself and my friends "cut our teeth" on their scouse repertoire with songs like, The Leaving of Liverpool, In my Liverpool Home, Liverpool Lou, Maggie May, Seth Davey and Dirty Old Town passing into our own song collections and becoming standards at folk clubs up and down the UK.
Alas, time passes and, after a glittering career, The Spinners retired as a band in 1988, after 30 years together, although they led the community singing at the 1989 FA Cup Final and played some Christmas shows in the early 1990's. Individually they continued to perform solo, or in other musical collaborations.
TONY DAVIS continued to pursue his first love, jazz, and is still performing with his band.       HUGHIES JONES followed up his lifelong interest in songs of the sea, both writing and performing them as only he can.   Along with his lovely wife Christine, he also runs the Everyman Folk Club in Liverpool city centre.   At the final night of the season at Wrexham Folk Club in May it was amazing to see Hughie's vintage performance at the ripe old age of 77!!!
MICK GROVES is still performing solo on the folk club scene whilst Cuban born CLIFF HALL retired to Australia and sadly passed away there in 2008.
It is therefore a very rare occasion, these days, to see any of the remaining members performing together, but there will be such an occasion next Thursday 11th July at 8.15pm at - The Hungry Horse Folk Club, Whitby Sports and Social Club, Chester Road, Whitby, Ellesmere Port, CH65 6QF. Two members of The Spinners will take the stage once more to relive the glory days when, in folk terms, they ruled Merseyside and a good way beyond too.
HUGHIE JONES and MICK GROVES team up with their lifelong friend and bass player, "COUNT" JOHN MCCORMICK (very often referred to in the past as "the fifth Spinner"). John appeared on several of the "fab four's" albums and backed them on many live shows and concerts. I rarely use the word legends as it is, for the most part, an overstated epithet but they truly are the last of a dying breed, the folk revivalists of the 1950's and 1960's. They can still play a good tune, sing a good chorus, tell a good tale and, above all, entertain an audience so go along and see the original pioneers who laid such good foundations for the musical road we all followed.
Telephone Angie or John Owen urgently on 0151-678-9902 to book for this truly unique evening, as I understand that tickets are going like 'hot cakes'.

The biggest local event next week is of course The International Musical Eisteddfod in Llangollen that runs from Tuesday 9th to Sunday 14th July. However, the powers that be have put scant information on their website about the much vaunted "Folk Friday" (12th). Apart from an Open Mic competition there seems very little to enthuse about, unlike last year when, despite the atrocious weather, it was a great day and night of UK folk music. No mention of any acts booked this year and I only found out about the cancellation of the Jamie Smith's Mabon gig at The Town Hall on Friday (12th) by e-mailing the band themselves!!! They informed me that they too have had no response from requests to keep their fans informed. We will, as usual, all enjoy the colour and the occasion but do not ignore the music that is on your own doorstep.
